What’s the backstory on why the 2 Ole Miss players didn’t get an extra year to begin with?

Haven’t heard that

Bc they went to the draft/NFL well before the Colorado ruling making 5 in 5 possible
So they were never given the chance to get their 5th year even though they are 2022 kids, which is who this ruling is specifically designed for
The argument is that they should have been given this opportunity and would have stayed for a 5th year if they had known or a decision made before declaration deadlines

Additionally, they were already in camp when that ruling for 5 for 5 came out.
They couldn’t withdraw from the draft like the SEC rules say and they were already signed by that time.
Also, the LA judge who granted the TRO required them to pay back their professional money in order to be eligible.

But why did anyone ever get a fifth year? “Covid year” is dumb. Why do they get to make up what they missed?? We don’t.
My residents who died without family don’t get a do over.
Weddings and graduations don’t get a do over.

It should be noted that when the NCAA originally came out with the 5 for 5 rule, they excluded the class of 2022. But then some judge decided that they didn’t like that and they wanted the class of 2022 to be included. That’s what started this mess.

A lot of people missed this. I understand why the conferences are doing what they are doing to future-proof this stuff, but those guys who went to the draft because they had no other choice are getting screwed in all this.

And I believe even that federal ruling was stayed by the appeals court; correct me if I am wrong here. It boils down to a stayed ruling creating chaos. Contrary to popular belief, the NCAA wins more than it loses in federal court; the state courts are where the NCAA loses consistently.

Nothing to do with Covid. It's the TJ Finley rule. Some sort of limitation had to be put on college athletics eligibilty, regardless of transfer rules.

The federal litigation is still pending. The order from the district court that allowed them to play was overturned on appeal.

Yes, the protective order was stayed; I probably worded my original statement wrong.

Bc their tonsils were in perfect condition.

Do you recall what college football was like that year? Some programs didn't even have a season. It actually made sense at the time; it just screwed up things going forward.
That would have been the perfect time to implement 5-for-5.

The NCAA let the rumor out that 5 for 5 was coming but not approved before the draft. They did not act on it until after the draft. This left the 2022 recruiting class with no option but go to the draft or retire from playing.
The NCAA then let the rule out and declared the rule was not applicable to players from 2022 after the draft.
The 2021 class is a non issue.
The 2023 class is elegible for 5 for 5.
So in their unique way of doing things the NCAA has created an aggreved class of players. The list is not infinite. I feel that most of these players in the suit if given the choice would have chose NFL anyway but when faced with being cut saw another option.

Meanwhile Max Johnson is still on a roster. Meanwhile Chambliss is still on a roster.
If your recruiting class was before 2022 then you should be gone anyway. That’s how the rule should have been written.

Chambliss and Johnson, and many others, are in completely different factual situations than the disputed professional class cases. Most people realize this but some are just to obtuse to see it.
Chambliss’ case involved his attempt to play a fourth year of college football. Because the NCAA did not present any evidence in the hearing to refute his documentation of medical issues during one year at Ferris State, the Judge granted Chambliss’ request to play a fourth year of college football. Clear precedent, including by the NCAA in many cases, and thus nothing unusual about the case.
My preference would be to allow all class of 2022 members to be grandfathered into the 5 for 5 rule regardless of circumstances. However, the league voted not to do so and that will be that. Any judicial modification will likely come well after the season ends.

I don’t think a lot of people realize this: the NCAA announced that going forward all athletes will have 5 years of eligibility once you enter college; BUT the ncaa excluded current seniors. No real reason given. The announcement was also made late well after all the ncaa meetings took place. The NFL draft had already taken place.
It was expected that seniors from 2025 were going to say “why not us” and bring this to court- it affects all sports. A federal judge agreed with them snd granted them eligibility.
The subsequent suits are where we currently are. The NCAA has allowed basketball players from Europe that played in pro leagues to play in college some 125 of them. So some ex G league players said why not us and filed suits last year. One player at Alabama played 6-7 games but lost on appeals. I think that’s where we are

And out of the entire group of 220 that would qualify, none have been given an extra year except for the small number carved out by a couple of rogue courts (like the one in La.)
