I find Les to be mind boggling.

Yeah

Have no idea how he kept the program together as long as he did.

He had good lines every year, maybe not great, but solid. That was a time when a great back and solid line could win a lot and sometimes everything.

We won in spite of him,

That just isn't true, though at times we lost because of him. The 2008 broke him as a coach, I think and the evolving landscape of college football left him behind.

And he turned out to be a creeper rather than the man many, myself included, thought he was.

Had Saban not gone to Bama, I think Les would have won at least 1 more NC and probably a couple more. Then we would be struggling about how to think of him post creep status.

He was a caricature of the LSU Football program & held us back for years while Alabama took over.

LSU folks in charge should have known that was a lie. The rumors were always there about his shenanigans while an assistant at Michigan. They knew why the Michigan coach never recommended Les as his successor.

As the years go by the more and more his legacy is stained. Hell i knew he was an idiot but at the time i forgave him for being a good guy. Well after finding out he wasn't as good as we thought he was now glad his name is fading into oblivion.

Les inherited an LSU program where the expectation level was as high as it had been in decades...maybe ever (at that time). He maintained that level of success for over a decade. Hell, one could make the argument he was as good, if not better than Saban in his first 3 seasons at LSU. LSU went 9-3 in the final season under Saban. Les went 10-1, 10-2, 10-2 (National Champion).

The downfall for Les was his stubbornness. He changed his overall approach following the 2008 season and refused to change it again as the way the game was played progressed. I have no doubt that stubbornness left at least 2-3 more national championship opportunities on the table.

The "vacating" of wins is irrelevant and a joke. No matter how much the NCAA wants to, you can't rewrite history. We all saw those wins take place.

Saban woke up the sleeping giant and set the foundation for what has become one of the best programs in America. But given Saban was here for only 5 years, it's hard to argue Les isn't objectively the most successful HC in LSU history. Subjectively I think Saban and Kelly are better HCs (and their careers including other stops bear that out). I also think Kelly has an opportunity to surpass Les in terms of success at LSU.

Even when I questioned his coaching, I felt that he wouldn’t do anything sketchy to embarrass the university. WAY off…

Lots of revisionism going on here.
Les was a very good coach and he had as good a run here as anyone ever has as football HC. Very good recruiter. He apparently ran a good ship (Vidal Alexander notwithstanding) overall and won a couple of nattys.
he's easy to criticize though, b/c
1) He's not Nick Saban (nobody else is);
2) 1/9/12 was unforgiveable;
3) horrible game manager;
4) big boobed coeds

He had me totally fooled. I thought he was stupid, incompetent and stubborn and I was right about that but I also thought he was a good guy who the players loved. I also thought he was a good family man and really pretty funny at times. Now he is just part of the past and he has been swept away with the dirt. In retrospect, he should have been fired three or four years before he actually was. Bringing him back for that last year and then firing him midseason was really brainless of our AD.

Disagree with OP. Hindsight he has faults but his charisma and likability was second to none. He did much more good for players and fans than bad IMO a legend to me

Les is the Joe Biden of college football. Can’t run anything correctly. Don’t know where he is half the time. Neither can complete sentences with proper words.

I could be remembering wrong, but it seemed like a whole bunch of Facebook moms were crying about Les possibly being fired(because they loved him) and that helped buy him extra time. I wonder if those moms would want their daughters working for Les knowing what we know now?

Les will always be a stubborn arrogant tool for himself only.
