They get good ratings, much higher than replacement programing would. They aren't going anywhere.

You only say that because LSU is a fixture for the Texas Bowl.

It sure seems that way

Just another part of college football that the E$PN corporate monolith has taken a wrecking ball to. Bowls used to be special. There weren’t very many so it was a big deal to be invited. They were named exclusively for local commodities (Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Peach) and in desirable warm weather destinations where cities were glad to have the extra tourism boost at the traditionally low holiday season. And it was the only time of the year when you would match up against teams from other conferences for bragging rights.
Now, after E$PN and their corporate money got a hold of it, they expanded it to the point that we have the SnoopDoggPopTartsWasabi Bowl in such exotic locales as Boise and Detroit, with half the roster opting out because they’ve already transferred and the few stars are resting up for the combine! The dozen or so teams that declined bids this year is just the first crack in the dam. The whole shitshow of mega-conference, NIL, transfer portal, opt-out “college” football that E$PN alone has created will all come crumbling down. They have completely destroyed one of the greatest sports ever in pursuit of the almighty dollar!

Anyone 40 and over knows what college football used to be. It was special. Destroyed by another insatiable corporation whore.

Sad but true! The game I’ve been watching and loved since the 80’s is all but dead!

There will come a time very soon that there won't be enough teams to cover all the bowls.

That 5-7 Rice had to fill a spot tells us we’re already to that point

That's actually not a bad idea, but they would need to get rid of conference tie-ins and have it as a the best bowl games get the best teams type of system so we don't get stuck going to the same cities every year.

The bowl games need to start paying the players NIL directly rather than the full payout going to the teams and conferences perhaps with additional NIL opportunities going to the winning team.

Oh I agree. They had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to fill one spot. And that one spot got filled after 6 or 7 teams said "no thanks" to a week in Birmingham.

I am just saying that since the precedent has been set for teams opting out of bowls, soon (likely next year), there will be so many teams opt out and so many other teams decline the invite that there literally won't be enough teams to to fill bowl slots. They got lucky this year.

I new it was turning this way as soon as they approved a single playoff style game… It’s a bad product for me.
It’s been a slow collision course ever since the BCS picked a 1 and 2. The tie-ins for the big four was unique and can’t survive an expanded playoff if all the top conference teams no longer go to the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange like they used to.

Hear me out: maybe CFB can salvage the bowls by making some of the lesser ones CFP play-in games for bubble teams

They need to make the smaller bowls part of a playoff format the group of five schools. That would spark interest.

Yeah but there is no net gain. All you would be doing is transferring the interest in a playoff game to a bowl playoff game - no net gain.

Bring back the Bluebonnet Bowl. I like the old names better than the new ones. The pop tart bowl? Smh
Tangerine
Aloha
Sun
Etc.

Just do away with the bowls and expand the playoffs to 16 or more.

Make positions 9,10,11,12 play in positions for bubble teams. 5,6,7,8 get 1st round byes. 1,2,3,4 get byes 1st and 2nd rounds.
