Doubt it…He wasn’t starting if Brennan we’re still here…More likely he was told he wasn’t going to be able to compete for starting job b/c Kelly was giving it to his guy. If you don’t think that trip Howard took up to Notre Dame to meet with Kelly was an indication who Kelly is giving the job to, you are naive.

Maybe it’s all a smokescreen.

Realized he suck's and his Daddy O wasn't going to be around to give him the job! Also feel his little feelings were still hurt because of the Arkansas game.

His dad sat in the stands this year and knowing football knew his TE son wouldn’t see the field for two more years. So they decided to go else where so they can play together. Don’t blame them. But let’s be honest Max is a mediocre qb with a inaccurate, weak, inconsistent arm. Good luck to the kids.

if you take it from his perspective, he’s started 14(?) games and he’s now (potentially) being told that he will be in competition with one guy who has no experience and another who has limited experience.

That sounds like every QB everywhere.

Does it? Was Burrow in a competition during Spring ball in ‘19? Was Trevor Lawrence?

Coaching change alters the dynamic, no doubt. But how often is the QB who started every game the previous season in a true competition for the job. How often do starting QBs transfer.

Johnson may not have been a world beater, but he finished 4th in conference in yards and completion %, 3rd in touchdowns.

I wouldn’t blame Kelly for not promising anything. But I won’t blame Johnson for feeling like he’s earned some assurances.

I think that BK told him it would be an open competition going into the fall.

1. We have an oc locked in that doesn’t suit max limited skill set

2. Was told it’s a wide open comp with Walker and Nus and he left.

3. If he wants to actually play with his brother some small school gonna get a Johnson package

His brother is signing on Dec. 15.
He wasn’t going to be at a place where Max was a backup. If signing was in February it may have changed some things.

This. Ed’s days of nepotism and preference for seniority are over. Best players play.

Unlike others I embrace Kelly running off soft kids. We have an adult running things now, adults in charge don’t work for every kid.

He wasn’t told that the job isn’t his for sure.
He knows that automatically, no coach is ever gonna tell some guy he’s the starter for sure going into next season, mostly it’s understood if they are elite. If not elite then you’re always fighting for your job

Yes he was. Brennan just got hurt making it a moot point. Brennan transferred because he knew how things were stacking up.

As long as O was here, Max was going to be given every chance to get the most snaps.

Papa Johnson tried to put pressure on Kelly and Kelly didn’t give him a commitment. It’s really that simple

Mainly because Kelly is a true adult and real coach, pressuring him doesn’t work. You either get in alignment or you get out the door. It’s the only way true alignment works.

Most likely the kid just wants a fresh start. New coach, 3rd OC

He would have gotten exactly that had he stayed at LSU
