The guy you are thinking of is Koufax. Like Ryan, his control was iffy early on, but he fixed that in a way that Ryan never did. One of his 4 no hitters was perfect. They were easily the 2 most unhittable guys in post WWII baseball.
Former big leaguers I’ve spoken to who’ve either faced or were teammates with both give the nod to Koufax. Don Sutton told me that in the Dodger dugout, they were sometimes amazed anyone could even foul a pitch off Sandy.

if they had Tommy John surgery in the late 1960s, Koufax probably pitches another 5-7 years.
No.
Koufax had an arthritic elbow. Tommy John can’t help that.

Ah, I don’t think so.
Interesting thing I heard last night was the idea that whoever drafts Skenes may shut him down for the year. I think that could be a good idea.
Although if Pittsburgh drafts him and finds themselves still in the playoff hunt come August/September it’d be hard for them to ignore the possibilities with him in the rotation.

Skenes is the closest thing to Nolan Ryan

The NR documentary on Netflix was good. Complete baw. Got traded from Angels to Astros and drove his family back to Texas in a single cab pickup. Kids rode entire way in the back.

Control… Ryan was a huge wild pitcher in his day. He was either on or off. He leads the MLB in walks I believe.

7 career no-hitters (next-most is Sandy Koufax with 4)
Lowest career batting average allowed (minimum 1,500 innings pitched): .204
12 career 1-hitters, tied with Bob Feller
18 career 2-hitters
31 career 3-hitters
Crazy stat of the week:
Nolan Ryan has 68 complete games where he allowed 3 hits or less. The current active leaders in complete games are Adam Wainwright with 28, Justin Verlander with 26 and Clayton Kershaw with 25. No one else has broken the 20 mark.
Skenes delivery does remind or Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens with the compact leg raise during the windup.

Roger Clemens (Prior to steroids) is a better comparison.

I was going to say Tom Seaver, he repeats his motion effortlessly, and throws harder than it looks, Seaver also was able to control his pitches in the strike zone

I’ve read a few times that if radar guns of today were to be used, he’d have touched 105-106 multiple times.
You’ll also read that many are skeptical if 106 is even possible. No one has ever done it.

Let them mainline steroids again, and I bet there would be another like Nolan Ryan within 10 years.

Ryan is a ok comparison, but the way he was going about things last night was more reminiscent of Sandy Koufax. He had Tennessee totally on the verge of capitulation.

Imagine what Skenes hits when he’s fully developed as a man at age 27/28 years old.

Agreed…..BUT I will say this Skenes is the only college or high school pitcher I’ve ever seen that I’ve said maybe he can get to Nolan’s level in the bigs. I mean imagine if MLB pitching coaches can develop Skenes like they’ve developed Nola and Gausman. I mean he certainly has the potential to get to Ryan’s level…..but again let’s see what he does in the bigs.

MOST POPULAR. He played on shitty teams for the most part that could not help him at all for a large portion of his time. He was just a young thrower with the Mets. You have to score runs to get wins. He also had a .204 career batting average.
He was CLEARLY the best in ‘72. Palmer was more popular and that’s it. Go look up that bull shite. We know you know that though. You know everything about the history of baseball at 35 or whatever age you are.

Everyone needs to go watch “Facing Nolan” on Netflix if you haven’t already. Great documentary. Nolan Ryan is the goat but really struggled with control in high school, college and the big leagues before putting it all together. In that regard, Skenes is light years ahead of Nolan Ryan.
Will he age like fine wine the way Nolan Ryan did? Only time will tell.
Nolan Ryan was a cattle farmer with a gift from God on his right shoulder.

The doctor who invented the surgery, Frank Jobe (the Dodger team physician) said that Koufax had the very same condition that Tommy John had, and had he come up with the surgery 10 years earlier it would have been called Sandy Koufax surgery.

Ryan wasn't really known for his control
