Power and control. The batter knows the heat is coming at least 3-4 times. He dares the batter to hit it

Slow down a bit.

Skenes is an absolute unit, but I don’t know that there will ever be another Nolan Ryan.

I’ve read a few times that if radar guns of today were to be used, he’d have touched 105-106 multiple times.

Not sure why you're getting down votes. He's very similar in that he can throw in the 100s no matter how many pitches he's already thrown. It's very impressive. Can he do it in MLB? Who knows. But, he is very similar.

Power and control.

Control? You might want to go lookup Nolan Ryan’s stats. Ryan walked more than anyone in history. The dude threw fire but he wasn’t known for control.

Skenes is better than Ryan at his age. Ryan didn’t have a pitching coach until ‘71 when he got to the Angels. When he became a true “pitcher” wasn’t until about ‘79.

For the record, they had to calculate the velocity after they picked up the ball. I believe it was about 10’ from the plate and that was calculated to be 108. There is little doubt that Trackman has changed metrics and analytics.
His last pitch at 47 was 98… 5714 Ks later. Never will be another guy like him.

Ryan holds 51 total MLB records, including:

5,714 career strikeouts (next-most is Randy Johnson with 4,875)
7 career no-hitters (next-most is Sandy Koufax with 4)
Lowest career batting average allowed (minimum 1,500 innings pitched): .204
12 career 1-hitters, tied with Bob Feller
18 career 2-hitters
31 career 3-hitters
15 200-strikeout seasons
6 300-strikeout seasons

control
Ryan had absolutely terrible control at Skenes age. He had close to a 1:1 SO:BB ratio early in his MLB career.

Also, obligatory:

Nolan Ryan was known for being wild for most of his career. It's what got him traded from New York to California after about 5 years of being up and down in the Mets system. He led the American League 6 times in walks and twice in the National League. Even in his later years, his control was not pinpoint. Bad comparison.

I am old enough to remember Nolan Ryan. His power and control is similar because of his presence.Everyone watching is in awe, knowing how special this guy is.They were saying that Skenes could possibly start in the majors this year.

True. Partly because Skenes is pitching to lineups where half would not make it out of rookie league.

Let’s wait and see.

I love pumping Skenes as much as anyone, but he’s probably getting too much love believe it or not. There are several dudes in the bigs putting up similar numbers but aren’t close to Nolan Ryan lol

You say Ryan, but the other posters are right. There is a reason none of Nolan's 7 no hitters was a perfect game. there were always 3-4 walks thrown in there.

The guy you are thinking of is Koufax. Like Ryan, his control was iffy early on, but he fixed that in a way that Ryan never did. One of his 4 no hitters was perfect. They were easily the 2 most unhittable guys in post WWII baseball. And, if they had Tommy John surgery in the late 1960s, Koufax probably pitches another 5-7 years.

To compare a kid who is about to spend the next 1-2 years in the minors to players like this is totally unfair.

Skenes' power and consistency is better than most pitchers in the majors right now.he is only going to get better. He is still very young.when he is 30,everybody will be making this comparison and the numbers will back it up.

The similarity I see is the effortless motion, using leg strength to generate velocity. This is easier on the arm, which allows velocity to remain deep into games. Throwing 100 mph plus 120 pitches into a game is special.

What I see from Skenes is a more diverse array of pitches, that has improved since the season started. He’s just tapping into his pitching ceiling. This is the first year that pitching has been his 100% focus. Does this mean he’ll have the type career Ryan had. That’s unlikely. So many factors go into a pitcher having the success and longevity Ryan did. I do see Skenes having a better winning percentage over his career.

As they say, the sky is the limit.
