re: Should LSU (or the SEC as a whole) have an ice hockey team?

FWIW, about half of the players on the Monroe team are from Canada. Only one is from the South (Miami) and the rest of the league is similar with a lot of the Americans coming from places like Michigan and upstate NY. There seems to be plenty of guys happy to have a chance to play even if it’s not in a traditional hockey environment. Granted, a lot of FPHL players aren’t even D1 level of talent but I still think recruiting for it would definitely be possible

Have you heard of the Dallas Stars? Florida Panthers?
Between the two teams, the Panthers have one southerner in Texan Seth Jones. That's what I mean by cultural foothold: the game lives with the kids.

It takes a start. In the Dallas area we have many youth hockey league teams. There are programs where the Stars bring in kids for free to try out hockey. It is bigger in the south than you think it is.

I'm sure I'' get lots of downvotes but LSU should get a men's soccer team way before thinking about an ice hockey team. There's loads of talent on the Gulf Coast and Texas to have a very strong team consistently. No one anywhere around Louisiana plays ice hockey.

There are cities that are starting to have a youth hockey, and already have rinks in place. It all comes down to money. I see lacrosse happening before anything else, and that sure as heck isn't happening anytime soon. Schools have had club lacrosse teams for decades now. The sport is growing like crazy all along the south. Louisiana now has 20 teams in the LHSLL. Most southern states have a consistent growth in the sport.
Bringing wrestling back would be sweet too. The wrestling community in Louisiana is really passionate. With the addition of girls wrestling to the state it just opens up more interest.

I'd much rather see a rowing team, University Lake would be a good location to base them from.

I would be for that. My son would have liked to play soccer at LSU. Now he had to go up north to get a soccer scholarship.

quote:a couple tweaks of the rules would easily fix that. Plus, the goal is too small, considering the goalie is the size of a sumo wrestler, with all the padding.
Only downside of hockey is the low scoring.

I’m not sure where the club team at LSU plays
I am not sure about present day, but in the past their 'home" ice was Planet Ice in Lafayette. That is still the address listed on their "contact us' page.

LSU used to have a club hockey team, not sure if they still do or not.

A Shreveport born and raised hockey player just signed with #1 Michigan.

Having the Mudbugs be a feeder team to LSU hockey is already built-in.

Yes ! Then we could get Canadians and Eastern European kids to play with NIL money !!????
Posted on 1/13/26 at 2:24 pm to Garlicsauce
They're having enough time dividing the revenue share among the current varsity sports. As a matter of fact, thanks to NIL, you're going to see big schools downsizing their athletic departments.

Who learned how to skate/play in Denver when his old man was a Nugget.
Every city with a pro team has a Bantam Major program and there are kids from all over the country, even the south. But if you even kind of aspire to compete in college hockey, you'll make your living recruiting the north. I think DU had like 9 kids from Canada on their roster last year.

Could they not recruit cold weather kids to the south? Play hockey and not freeze when you leave the area?
Arizona St has managed to put together a top level D1 team. It is only a matter of money, most of your recruits come out of the Canadian Junior system anyway. High school kids do not go play in college immediately.

Tell that to the FLorida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lighning!! AND THE Dallas Stars and the Nashville Predators,,
