Paul Dietzel returns

With all the hoopla about Kiffin returning to Oxford got me thinking about Saban returning to BR with Alabama & also the old timers can remember Coach Ditzel returning to LSU with South Carolina in 1966 - remember he too won a national championship at LSU. I remember his return as a nothing burger, but it was a different time.

That was my first year going to the games. I was 8 years old. That was the first game of the year. I started with the next one (Miami) because I guess one of the adults scooped up my ticket to go see Dietzel.

I've never misspelled Nik Saban's name.

Another part of the nothing burger is that according to Dietzel, LTG Middleton basically told him it was his duty to take the job at Army so he left on good terms with his boss.
quote:
Following the 1961 season, Dietzel—who had previously served as an assistant at West Point and led the LSU Tigers to an undefeated national championship in 1958—approached the university president about the job offer. Middleton, a highly decorated World War II Lieutenant General, looked at the opportunity through a military and civic lens. According to historical accounts and an interview with Dietzel, Middleton famously told him it was his "patriotic duty" to go to the United States Military Academy and make the football program a winner.

Dietzel was football genius in his day.
His team consisted of 3 teams...White, Gold, and Chinese Bandits.
'58 National Champions and had the '59, too, but was cheated from it against Tennessee.
The Fighting Tigers haven't won back to back NC's, however, they really did those years.
The Man was far, far from Mr. Irrelevant.

Well Dietzel eventually became our AD if I remember correctly. But yeah, Paul had it all and went for what he thought was greener pastures.

Sabin invented the sugarcube live polio vaccine. In his retirement he and his wife Fran created crossword puzzles for the daily newspapers

You know it’s a different time when a coach leaves LSU and goes to South Carolina.
6 decades ago in football is like going back to a primitive, ancient society.
