So irrelevant that still today, MANY in the media still refer to the title as split

Are you aware of what AP stands for?

If so, you'll understand why the media continues to say they "split" champions. Once the BCS came around, championship games started to exist so champions were determined on the field, not by random publications voting on champions.

Like you said, it's no big deal. Everyone knows USC didn't really win any championship. The sad part is there 2004 title got stripped because of the Reggie Bush non sense.

USC became the dynasty that never was...

How? The NCAA has never been in the business of crowning a champion in what is now FBS. The conferences, on the other hand, have.

That’s exactly what happened actually.

More importantly, the vast majority of college football fans accept both LSU and USC as champions in 2003. Tiger fans can disagree all they want, but unofficial championships are dependent on public acceptance.

This is a better argument (although winning the BCS championship is, by definition, official). But USC does not have a substantive case as to why they deserve a share of that year’s title. Best wins, better loss, strength of schedule, common opponents, etc. Every single metric favors LSU.

Combine that with the more logistical argument above about how these championships are contested and sanctioned and there really cannot be any argument that LSU has the much stronger case of the 2.

And you are a dumb and living in complete denial if you won't admit that the idea of a split and the AP not going along with a agreement to award the AP trophy to the BCS champion until it became apparent that USC could be left out. By any merit or criteria you want to come up with LSU was clearly the better team. Just go back and listen to the 2 teams that played LSU and USC.

Don’t matter- in the college football history books, it will show LSU as the 2003 National Champions

very much so and very much aware that most of the media isn't affiliated with the AP and not aligned with their west coast biases BUT, they're still widely respected. To not acknowledge that is willful ignorance.

Like gender, there is a reality there that some people don't want to believe in. It doesnt mean that it doesn't exist. Some people have "their truth" but there is always a reality and the reality is in 2003 the AP was widely respected and their trophy carried alot of weight. Alot has changed since then and LSU/USC is lot of the reason why. But, it doesnt change what happened.

Nope. Go take a look at the NCAA’s records. LSU and USC are both national champions for 2003.

If the AP had decided to award UCF the Natty that year they were undefeated, would anyone take it seriously (besides UCF)? I don't take USC's 2003 title seriously.

Now this here is all that really needs to be said. USC was awarded a Championship. LSU earned theirs on the field.

I think you severely underestimate LSU fans.

Had LSU been declared the AP National Champion there would have been a parade. There would be a 2003 National Champions flag flying at the stadium. There would have been people under tents at every major intesection in BR selling "National Champions" merch...and every LSU fan would have bought something. There would be numerous posts on this board every year arguing that LSU was a "real" National Champion because the BCS screwed LSU by putting Oklahoma, who didn't even win their conference, into the BCSCG over SEC Champ LSU. LSU fans wouldn't have just accepted USC as the "real" champions and said "Oh well. That's the way it is. Maybe one day we will win a real championship." They would tell anyone who would listen it was a "real" national championship." You're a fool if you think otherwise.

And that was far from the last gasp of stupidity.

There hasn't been a split NC since, and everyone involved in college football has accepted the winner of the BCS championship game, later CFP champion game, was the undisputed national champion.

AP trophy became irrelevant after the BCS was invented and now even more so with the CFP
agreed.

The silly voter polls became irrelevant once the championship was decided on the field: first with the BCS matching the top 2 teams, then the 4-team playoff, and now the 12-team playoff.

Silly voter polls are a relic from a bygone era. Ignore them all.

I meant other stupidity. Like the Bama mulligan. Or FSU getting left out the playoffs for an injured QB despite earning their way in. Lots of shenanigans.
