re: Once and for all. Declining college football attendance is NOT just an LSU problem

The huge number empty seats may be a growing problem elsewhere. Many programs rarely have full stadiums and most have cleared out the majority of fans whenever the game is likely decided.
But that is not what one would expect of Death Valley or the Cathedral of College Football.
Whatever the individual reason, the experience in Tiger Stadium is not what it once was.
And that is a shame.

The stadium will only get emptier in coming years. This is not a reversible trend.
I have been a season ticket holder since 1991, since I was 26 years old. Last year I surrendered two tickets and sold the other four to a family member. I did my part for a very long time. Where are the 26 year old fans? On their phones.

Fix the traffic problem and, I believe, that fixes 50% of the attendance issues.
LSU can’t fix the problem because they essentially created the problem when they decided to monetize parking on every square inch of campus.
It’s amazing how more efficient game day traffic was when the entire campus was a free for all. Having cops declare the free lots full is the dumbest thing ever and has forced everyone attending the game to arrive 3-4 hours before kickoff.

All people in gold sideline seats that left early last night should have a TAF tax added each time they do that. No reason unless you have a family emergency and if that many had one OLOL and BRG would have been overwhelmed. Come on tigers support your team.

Regardless of all the perks, the stadium game experience is diminished by all the TV timeouts.
OMG, Twice I counted in the 4th qtr alone we had a 3:00 min commercial break, a KO, and then another 3:00 min commercial break. I usually go to the games and the breaks are boring.
Piped in music does not bother me. The nonstop announcer blathering that you cant hear is bad because it just comes out as noise.

I noticed this last night really heavily for the first time. It seemed like every time the stadium actually got rocking at all, there was a TV timeout. Then, it was the new DJ thing to try to keep people in it. It just gets silly though. It’s not a pump up or keep in the game scenario. It takes away from the energy and flow of the game. Then, it’s all the sudden time to get back into the game. During every one of these timeouts, people inevitably get out their phones and it just really has changed the flow of the game. It’s hard to stay engaged as a fan that long when the energy waxes and wanes so much. The two 9 play scoring drives we had were great, but there were no time outs. This, no TV breaks and the tempo was there. The energy was there. The band was playing and not a DJ.
I think traffic plays a role as well. You also have to take into account younger families who have kids and need a babysitter are probably leaving to accommodate at halftime or mid-3rd.
Baseball, as a sport, was revamped because ut got boring with all the delays. It may be getting time to do the same with football. The TV timeouts, even when watching at home, have gotten out of hand.

It’s just too expensive in some ways. Huge ticket prices plus if you’re out of town mandatory 2 night stays at hotels with inflated prices to match. An LSU football game is an expensive to attend. Not to mention mandatory donations to TAF as a season ticket holder and I believe those donation amounts went up?

Joey! Is that you?
100% this is why I don’t go to games. It’s a very long day/night to get into/out of Tiger Stadium and watch the game.

I think with LSU specifically it’s a traffic flow issue. The game has to be a real exciting game to attend for anyone to have to deal with the traffic issues post game. That’s one of the reasons people leave early. Fix the traffic problem and, I believe, that fixes 50% of the attendance issues. Putting a good product on the field and the ease of watching it from home are the other 50% issues why people may not attend.
When it became a regular occurrence to take 2 hours to get off campus I tapped out on season tickets after having them for quite a long time. Love the Tigers. Love Tiger Stadium.
I hate what the Athletic Department and BRPD have done to the Gameday experience.

It is the reason people leave early. You can always count on an additional two hours to your ride home if you don’t.

Old fart here. Traffic was bad back when T.S. only held 68,000, as the traffic infrastructure was no where near as developed. No interstate, the whole College Ave. area was basically 2 lanes. People now spend more time at their tailgates, in the middle of the day time hear. The Gold Seat crowds dress, and act, as if they are at cocktail party. Or seats full of young kids sitting in their parents' seats passed down. Just a different crowd now days. Partying is a lot more important now. And, funny, we had kids & baby sitting requirements as well.

The 3 minute 25 second ad break followed by a kickoff, followed by another 3 minute 25 second ad break
This, this is ridiculous.
Plus every rule change for the clock has been to show more commercials and keep the game the same length.
So at the stadium you get less football and more dead time with shitty music.
I still go and stay till the end but man I get why people don't go and leave early.
The experience from just 10 years ago has declined significantly.

Some people in this thread have shown it’s not about LSU, it’s about themselves.
Most of us have busy lives, and going to a game is an all-day event. If people choose to stay home and watch from the comfort of their living room, that’s a perfectly acceptable decision.

I stayed until the end and it took me about 30 minutes to get across town to where I was staying. Traffic wasn’t an issue last night and the crowd was fine. Those who went had a good time. The hand wringing here about the crowd, attendance, and people leaving early is really over the top.

This is true.
I stayed till the end and the crowd was still pretty good. I even commented about how the stadium was still full.
Idk I thought we did pretty good.

Getting out of the stadium last night took a while too. A lot of people stayed until the end. I predict the place will be packed for Auburn.
