Not getting off the field on 3rd down

Obviously played a key role in the game. For our experts. what did y’all see that allowed Florida State to continue to move the chains.

lb's are bad, soft coverage so the db's wouldn't get beat deep...

Conservative calls. Most disappointing aspect of the game were the calls on both sides. Expected to be better coached.

House played no bump and run all game to throw receivers off schedule

It’s like were in a classic Saints “prevent defense” the entire game.

I dont think LSU respected the QB throwing the ball and were content to stay back and wait for him to make a mistake. I think they were much more concerned with him running and were willing to let him beat us through the air. Unfortunately, he did.

Anyone else notice that our DB’s don’t turn around and play the football? They are just trying to keep up with the WR. Hey guys, y’all are both going after the same thing, turn your head around and play the ball.

If they didn’t respect him throwing the ball they would have been down at the LOS. It was the complete opposite. They were terrified of their DB’s getting beat deep. Which after watching the game, probably shouldn’t have been a concern.

Honestly, it started with our front seven. Our DLine is not good, plain and simple. Secondary doesn’t have the athletes to cover at a high level so they play soft zone.

Everything underneath and across the middle was open, players out of position.

10 yard cushion, and dropping at the snap, on 3 & 8.

I can tell you are old.

But ironically you are correct but for the wrong reasons.
Matt House like the Saints on 3rd and long situations were playing the sticks. Most ALL NFL defenses play this on 3rd and long situations. It forces the WRs to check into the sort route. The key on defense is to make the tackle. The Saints the last 3 or 4 years have been very good at this technique. Matt House is trying to do the same thing with the LSU defense. It's a very good approach if you can execute because it prevents you from getting beat deep. The problem is in order to perfect this defense you have to watch a lot of film on your opponent and recognize their tendencies on 3rd and long and meet them at the spot for the tackle or breakup. LSU obviously has not practiced this enough. It takes a lot of practice and most CFB teams just don't have that much time during the week. IMO Matt House should be doing more bump and run coverage and force the QB to make great throws. You will get burned in the NFL with these kinds of defenses because the QBs are good and can make the throws. Not so much in CFB. CFB QBs are just not that good.

Looked like our linebackers were shite at playing zone. Dropping back and guarding grass while receivers flash or just sit down in their zone.

Not finishing sacks and LB’s being out of position in zone coverage

We played off of their WR on the outside, and played a lot of soft zone underneath and over the middle.
I saw several times where a LB in zone moved to cover a shorter receiver - a lot of times who was already in someone else's zone, leaving someone (usually the TE) more easily wide open behind them.
Giver the number of new players and the new scheme for our defense, it was bound to have lots of little miscommunications which need correction. Only a live fire game could really teach this.

Did not know this. Makes sense and hopefully the guys start picking this up better.

You're gonna get a lot of soft zone/poor lb play answers and it's hard to dismiss that but their QB gave us a lot of problems. Kelly said in his presser, we got to him but were unable to get him to the ground. The result was he extended plays and his receivers worked back to their QB into a lot of those soft zone open areas. We also lined up too far of the slot receivers/TEs quite often, 5 yards off the receiver on a 3rd and 3.
Just my take, might be crap though

LSU may have played a bit of a soft zone, but being the first game and the offense completely sucking, they were trying to avoid the big demoralizing plays.
