I was privy to some information a few months back that stated a new arena would be built along this area of Nicholson. This did not say that this would be the new PMAC but rather another arena. I assumed it would hold the other non-basketball sports once PMAC was rebuilt/renovated. This same source also stated the natatorium & Bernie Moore would be relocated near Alex Box. The field house has to stay because it’s a shelter.

This is the dumbest shite I’ve ever read. TAF can’t afford a 300 million dollar arena on its own so of course it has to partner with the city and a third party. it’s not “competing” with events, it will accommodate them like Moody does for Texas and the city of Austin.

It seems there wouldn't be much of a point in moving the natatorium if the field house stays. It would make sense that the field house and outdoor track stadium stay together.

The field house is connected to the track stadium. They’d have to have some kind of indoor facility with a new track stadium.

Yep you’re 100% correct regarding the funding. Not sure about the location

The days of new arenas with large capacities are over (at least for the foreseeable future). The last two new SEC basketball stadiums (Auburn and Ole Miss) hold less than 10,000 people

I would agree with you if it were to be an LSU sports only facility, and personally, I wish they would do that. But it doesn't make a lot of sense in a city the size of BR which is ripe for a modern (suites, amenities) ~15K arena which will attract non-sport events and hopefully a revenue generating hotel/mixed use development.

Also consider Auburn, AL and Oxford MS have a combined population of under a 100K.

Exactly. LSU and its partners want assurance that they won't be completing against a newly built city-owned facility.

LSU's new complex will be used for concerts, shows, and other non-sporting events. I imagine you can expect an agreement similar to Texas and Oak View.

Oak View Group

quote:

In 2018, it was announced that Oak View Group and UT agreed to form a public-private partnership, to build a new $375 million arena. The arena will replace the Frank Erwin Center as the home for the Texas Longhorns basketball programs, and will also function as a world-class events center for the city of Austin. The new arena is named the Moody Center following the Moody Foundation's grant of $130 million to the university. Oak View Group is funding the construction, and will manage the building in exchange for the right to keep most of the income from non-UT events, such as concerts and shows, for at least the first 35 years after opening. UT, however, owns the land under the arena and will be the owner of the building. Under the terms of the agreement, the university will have exclusive control of the arena for 60 days each year to hold men's and women's basketball games, graduations, and other events. Oak View Group, along with partners Live Nation and C3 Presents, will have the right to hold events on the other days.

I think the old front nine would be the perfect location for a new ground-up arena. It is big enough. Plenty of parking in every direction.

The ordinance says that the project would be located on property on the LSU campus. The most logical site would be the Bernie Moore site considering that you would still have the benefits of connecting to your relatively new practice facility, basketball statues, parking, and other assets while continuing to use the PMAC.

The more I'm reading, the more questions I have. I'm not huge fan of the agreement unless LSU commits to building a legitimately world class facility with adjacent hotels, bars, restaurants, etc.

Doesn't really specify where they'd build it or the details of what they are building. LSU can build a POS and it would handicap the River Center for 30 years from the date that the LSU arena would open for almost everything except BRSO, very small family events, or conventions.

Also - do you really want professional wrestling, Miss America, hip hop concerts, political rallies, minor league Hockey, or more raunchy regional comedy shows on campus? I'd need to understand how similar agreements work in other markets. If done correctly, it could be a huge benefit to LSU and Baton Rouge.

It also specifies "LSU Property". That could mean the main campus, the south campus, the area by Pennington, the area by the Rural Life Museum near I-10/I-12 split....nothing specified unless I missed it.

That could mean a MAJOR PMAC renovation OR a tear-down and rebuild on same site.

The agenda item literally says “new arena”

Exactly, prime location. Tear it down and build a modern representation of the Cow Palace, with Pete out front.

BUild the new arena at least big enough to accommodate our current supporters, at least 12,500.

OMiss and AU had smallish arenas BEFORE their current arenas were built and those arenas were never filled much less sold out with season tickets.

What makes Auburn Arena a great venue is they have a winning championship-type program and an exciting leader who is widely loved there. LSU already has that for WBB and Gymnastics. We do not need a new arena to make it louder. We need winning/exciting programs/teams to make it full and loud.

Not going to happen. It’s been said on here over and over.

LSU has plans in place to renovate the coliseum and its surrounding livestock facilities. LINK

quote:

This project consists of renovations and abatement to the John M. Parker Agricultural Center Coliseum and the adjoining Livestock Show Barn. This project is part of a larger, comprehensive, phased renovation to upgrade and enhance the usability of the Coliseum Facilities as additional funding becomes available. Phase 1 scope of work for the Coliseum will be abatement of hazardous materials in the entire building. The Coliseum is a 133,839 square feet facility built in 1937. Phase 1 for the Livestock Show Barn work will consist of abatement of hazardous materials, building code and ADA upgrades, renovations to all areas to accommodate the sheep and swine programs, adding a new roof over an arena and stock pens on the north side, and upgrades to lighting, public address system, HVAC systems, and the sprinkler system. The Livestock Show Barn is a 102,312 square feet facility built in 1939 and will be reconfigured to accommodate the Sheep and Swine Show Program.

I’m not sure where he was going with that but Dickies Arena looks somewhat similar to the cow palace, imo.
