My understanding is men’s basketball makes money not so much from attendance but from lucrative TV contracts. Women don’t get those huge contracts because of its lack of popularity.
I think this is the first year that women's basketball will have its own media rights package. It used to be lumped in with all the sports not named football or men's hoops. Not sure how much more that will bring in but it will make some difference.

Probably not a popular take, but we could save several million a year plus get a lot of physical facilities back, while not affecting M/F balance, by stopping tennis and swimming /diving. I’d add golf, but I suppose there’s a greater chance of a multi-million dollar alum coming from that…

Looks like some key area to reduce losses by either raising ticket prices or reducing expenses. The objective of forcing certain sports to stand on their on feet.

If you're just running a business on profit/loss rational to keep your doors open, them the comments on winners and losers and the need to chop losers is valid. But we're dealing with a state university and national prestige. National titles in loss leader sports shines positively on the university and state beyond the dollars and brings in wealth that are not reflected in a spreadsheet.

Am I reading this correctly? The AD lost $800k in total revenue? When is the last time our athletic dept operated on a net loss?

Basketball is only profitable because of the media rights allocation and the NCAA distribution (about 7MM combined).
Oh so basketball is “only” profitable because it’s the only other sport that matters. Ok thanks.
Across the board this shows why Scott Woodward needed to be fired.
His salaries for non revenue sports such baseball and women’s basketball are absurd.

It only produces about half the revenue of baseball otherwise, so by not having a better product LSU is leaving a lot of money on the table in ticket sales, donations, etc.

Someone else already kind of explained. But it’s pretty much my take on it too as to why it can look like a deficit for AD. One likely reason is that it could just be accounting/timing. It's also the reason that these numbers can be a little misleading in terms of us thinking about the allocation of funds for that time period. Remember, FY does not equal football season as far as timing, which is our biggest cost and also the main source of revenue. Fy is from July 1-June 30. Some big revenue hits after FY closes. Some expenses hit before revenue settles. Some years, you have one time expenses like facilities or buyouts. Universities plan for fluctuations like that on but it equals out over multi years. You can absolutely see a paper deficit that settles and resolves on a slightly different timeline than the FY runs. I could be way off, but it makes sense to me. LSU is def not broke.

Ok.So this isnt a fiscal year report. I thought it was...for 2024. Thats where my confusion comes in.

It is a fiscal year report. Lsu's fiscal year runs from July 1- June 30. So, in this case, it's fiscal year '24, but it includes the second half of '23 and the first half of '24. This is the most recent official documents directly from LSU that is published for public view that I could find.

I have no answer for why Track and Field is so damn expensive. Over $2 million just for travel!
Track & Field includes Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor T&F, both men and women. They compete and travel all year long. The travel expense seems reasonable if you combine some other sports with equal number of athletes and multiply the cost per season over the entire year.

I love LSU baseball. I didn't think it would make us a lot, but I never expected it to be a net loss...
This has been well known for a long time and why so many were pissed Scott fired a coach that had tournament teams 4/5 years for a coach that is 14-40 in SEC play

College baseball as a product is getting so much better, but the popularity is likely to go down. With NIL I expect the sport to become more regional and less parity, kinda the opposite of football

It’s always amazing to me how unserious lsu takes men’s basketball. Extremely disappointing.
