Yep. Admitting the portal class was a bust.
He said ‘roster construction’
I think the issue is that potential wise, they have (9) 3 hole hitters in the lineup. If we’re not slugging the ball around the park we’re not scoring
That’s how I took his answer

Is he specifically talking about Ryan, Costello, and Larson?

If you had 9 3-hole hitters in your lineup that would be one hell of a blessing for a problem in your roster. That ain’t it.

Yorke Simpson and Dardar

Definitely rolled the bus over the current group.
It’s not throwing anyone under the bus when he says he made mistakes in roster construction and it will never happen again. That is being brutally honest and taking 100% of the blame on himself.

That clip makes it sound like the end of this season is going to be real ugly

Jay felt like his 2026 team needed to add power in the portal. He added Dardar, Yorke, Carraway and Simpson. He knew he was sacrificing defense for power. The problem is when those guys are not hitting we don't have offense or defense. We also have a few guys on the team that are trying to be power hitters when maybe they would be better served trying to hit for average.

Jay is great but getting Skenes from Air Force and him turning into the best pitcher on the planet was by and large luck, nobody could've predicted it and I feel like it kind of warped everything after it. Enough transfers from Rhode Island and Grand Canyon.

Yorke and Simpson who had 20+ last year. Lesson learned though. Jay’s still my guy zero doubt. Now the young guys will get experience so that they will be more seasoned next year.

This is a bad look for JJ. I’m sure he’ll get it fixed, but basically admitting he tried to take the easy way out and it blew up in his face

These 2 videos actually make me feel a little better about the situation and the team’s future.
Jay knows this is screwed up, he admits it, is determined not to do it again, has an idea how to fix it.
It’s all you can ask of a guy.
And I think he’s good enough to make it happen.

Especially collegiate coaches. I wouldn’t think twice about coaching in the professional league over college now with all the NIL and transfer portal bull shite that college coaches have to deal with today. Just trying to retain the current players on your team in college is a 24/7 365 day a year job.

Basically what alot of folks have said here. Your base has to be built from Louisiana. U have to build with that as yiur base and then pick select players from other d1 g4 programs at positions of need. A closer a catcher a starter. But the majority has to come from homegrown kids from Louisiana.
Yeah, thats not at all what is being said. The guys developed through the program like Bide, Milam, serna, braun, stanny, and curiel arent from here, and they are performing here. Only schmidt and brown are from here and performing

That whole interview is awesome. He’s honest about what this team actually is and you can tell he’s pissed at himself because he constructed this team. What has and will always be respected by me at least is Jay always has a detailed plan. This team was a plan that just didn’t work. But Jay will learn and adapt because he’s the best coach in college baseball. Sometimes I wish our fanbase understood this as a whole and appreciated the fact that baseball and especially portal era baseball is fricking hard. At least we have the best coach to go after it every year. But the ignorant part of the fanbase can be loud and that’s just annoying at times.

Clearly a shot at Zach Yorke with the comment about power hitting coming from recruits and not portal guys
And Simpson, Dardar, and Calloway

quote:you are saying the same thing. Scenes improved, and it would be very difficult to expect similar progression in future players arriving on campus. Skenes is an outlier
False. Skenes even said the LSU facilities and staff support helped him develop into what he was in ‘23

No
He’s saying we have hitters trying to hit homers instead of taking the ball oppo or looking to drive the ball up the middle. With 2 outs, guys are hitting weak ground ball, infield fly, easy fly to center. Their approach is wrong.
LD% / GB% / FB% Show that.
When ppl complain about runners left on base, Ba/risp this is why.

That’s all fine and accurate.
But next year’s team will be built around Casan Evans and he can’t walk the 8 hole leading off an inning twice in 5 innings of work.

Sounded like he was paraphrasing Skip to me.
