I think Frank DeFord always insisted it wasn't based on Cannon, but an amalgamation of different athletes.
I don't think anyone doubts Cannon was at least one of those athletes though. There are some obvious parallels.

He actually played football in Tiger Stadium.
It just happened to be for a movie.
Goodman is a Great choice.
