I love LSU baseball but nowhere near as much as I love football. So this is coming from an “outsider” perspective in a sense. Jay is a more competent and better overall version of Coach O. He’s going to have huge mistakes and misses, but his work ethic is going to always rebound him. Skenes is Jay’s Burrow. This past season was getting those guys we got together and forming another great team. The other seasons are signs that he’s not that great of a coach as some on here make him out to be. Work ethic is phenomenal though. I do think he rebounds next season.

If not there will start to be a lot of chatter moving forward.

LSU and Ms State with their programs in the late 80s and 90s compelled SEC programs to invest in baseball…

I agree. State under Ron Polk was the foundation; Skip was the superstructure. Everyone else stands on their shoulders.

That said, there were other SEC teams doing well in baseball pre-CPM era. It wasn't just a two pony show. Here are the seasons that 3 or more SEC teams made it to Omaha pre-CPM:
1988 (UF, LSU, State)
1990 (UGA, LSU, State)
1996 (Bama, UF, LSU)
1997 (Bama, AU, LSU, State)
2004 (Arky, UGA, LSU, USCe)

I think the SEC is tougher now but its strength 'back then' can be downplayed.

I think the consistency and depth are what make it more difficult now. Kentucky was garbage until Cohen got there. They’ve been decent to actually good since. Vanderbilt was an afterthought until Corbin started exploiting minority scholarships and having guys emancipate from their parents for financial aid purposes. Even Auburn, who wasn’t ever really consistent has been to Omaha three times under Butch.

What is his record when you add in the SECT

SECT
2022: 1-2 W (UK); L (UTenn, UK)
2023: 1-2 W (USCe); L (Arky, A&M)
2024: 4-1 W (UGA, UK, USCe x2); L (UTenn)
2025: 1-1 W (A&M); L (OM)

So 7-6 overall.

He’s the Eli Manning of college baseball coaches. Immensely overrated based on a couple runs with extreme talent.

The mediocre SEC record…140 game sample size almost. ..given the resources invested, tell me he’s mediocre.

Now do his record in Omaha

It’s outstanding. But let’s not act like a little luck came our way getting Coastal Carolina in one of the finals.

JJ’s SEC record is not very impressive and leaves a lot to be desired.

Yeah, the boom and home runs on the portal and he got championships and then got depleted by the draft so the next year is a struggle. Everyone needs to calm down, I’ll take a championship every other year with a so so year after it. Anybody who says no is crazy, they can go worship the likes of Miles who was consistent but only got one and oissed away plenty of other chances.

The next task will be to bring a team to Omaha in back to back years. He has yet do that at Arizona and obviously not at LSU.

How many coaches actually accomplished that? Bertman at LSU in 96 and 97. Since then, schools have become much more competitive with all of the changes.

He's won 2 of the last 3 national championships. He made some terrible mistakes with this team. But, I think most are willing to take this one year on the chin then wait to see what happens next year.

I would happily trade an 0-30 SEC record one year for a national title. And we got 2, in 3 years, he has bought tons of good will.

Look at the conference record of other SEC head coaches Jay ranks towards the bottom.

So, who would you trade him with in SEC?

Not a comprehensive listing, but I recall:
CPM: '08 and '09
Vandy: '14 and '15
Arky: '18 and '19
UF: '23 and '24
UTenn: '23 and '24

His 2 natty's trumps his SEC record easy-peasy.

Agree, but he burned through at least half that good will this season. A repeat of this next year will require coaching changes.

My prediction for LSU Baseball: JJ will have us playing better in 2027 and 2028 and we may host Regionals in both those years.

IMO, LSU is immensely fortunate to have Jay Johnson leading our baseball program.

First of all, every coach will tell you the regular season is for positioning - the real season starts with regionals. Second, when it's all said and done, no one speaks of your SEC record, only Natties. Case in point, Skip Bertman.

There are 3 current SEC coaches who have won a national championship - let's examine that percentage.

Corbin: 2 in 23 years (8.6%)
Sully: 1 in 17 years (5.8%)
Bianco: 1 in 25 years (4.0%)
Everyone's Favorite Van Horn: 0 in 23 years

Johnson: 2 in 4 years (50%)

I’m sure he does.
It’s just not coming from this board

I sure hope you are not implying CJJ gives a damn what the feeling of poster are on this message board and damn sure isn't feeling any heat coming from a bunch of overly emotional posters.

And he was on the verge of getting fired before going on that run. If we win that rain game against them, they wouldn’t have even made the tournament.
