The SCOTUS could read the Congressional Record to discern the likely Legislative Intent when the Amendment was drafted.

So now the right wants to go into intent of the constitution? I don't think you would like that with other amendments. It is amazing that any justice could read the amendment and be on the dissent side of this. A 5 year old could read it and tell you what it means. Doesn't mean I agree with it, but the government can change it with another amendment, that's the only way

Hmm, a jury found him liable after seeing all the evidence and defense provided. Or your leader tells you otherwise.

I agree. Communism has a branding problem so they go with Socialist. But the truth is they want communism.

That he thinks anyone who is a socialist should be dead. You can't wonder why many people don't show up more to this board. We have people on the right wishing death on anyone on the left. This is how this board became so much of an echo chamber.

Thanks for the reply, Tigers.

Medicare is broke. Unfunded liabilities through the roof. Healthcare here is expensive because of cost shifting (because of medicaid, medicare, and them ungodly mountains of red tape piled on by government) and because of how fat and unhealthy Americans are.

Just seeing this. Medicare and medicaid are not perfect, but I do think they have a lot of good things. I would like to see a very basic version of medicare expanded with the ability for paying a higher tiers kind of like they do now that can give people what they want. I believe it would be cheaper overall than our current system. In a way, I wish businesses would pay higher salaries and stop paying any premium for people so everyone can see the true cost of healthcare.

Mamdani flat out said that his end goal is to seize the means of production. Mamdani is the darling of the Left. Is seizing the means of production now not considered socialism?

I don't agree with lots of what Mamdani is doing. I don't want someone that far left, but NY did so whatever. Just like there are plenty of nut job mayors of small towns but because they are small towns, nobody pays attention to them. He just happens to be one in a major city. It doesn't affect 99.999% of the people here's lives so I'm not sure why they care so much. If anything, we should applaud letting cities and towns do what they want and not trying to force your belief on everyone just because you believe you are right. I don't agree that government should take control of production.

I changed because MAGA has shown they are no longer the party of small government and conservative fiscal responsibility. That was the only reason I ever voted republican and they have 100% lost their way.

quote:

Last question; Why is it your belief that the government doesn't rake in enough money already? DeSantis has lowered spending 4 straight years and is now going to abolish property taxes for a lot of homeowners here in Florida. NY state's government spends TWICE as much as Florida, yet has 3 million FEWER people. So again, why do you think any government needs to rip taxpayers off even more?

I think it can and should be both. I think there is room to fix some broken items in the government to reduce some waste. I don't believe the way is what Trump tried to do earlier with Musk just gutting everything and then have to go back and fix it once some things were broken and actually did need funding after all. I haven't followed too much of stuff in Florida as it doesn't really affect me, but if the government can run efficiently with lower spending, that can be a great thing. I know Florida is very very low on the average teacher salary in the nation which sucks. I don't agree we should lower standards for teachers(which they have done) so they don't run out of teachers. If they paid more, it could be better. There is a lot of administration bloat in education that should be the focus, not teacher salary.

I don't see taxes as ripping taxpayers off. I see it as providing a service that some or many could need. The government builds and maintains roads, structures, schools, etc. But not every single person uses everything. I believe an educated society is better for everyone so I do want education funded properly. I am bothered by LA and TX forcing the 10 commandments in schools and now TX forcing teaching the bible in classes as well(until the SC hopefully strikes it down since it is common sense).

To put it another way, just because I'm a democrat, it doesn't mean I suddenly support every aspect of the democrat points. I would like to see a good effort to reduce the deficit. And I do think it will take scaling back a bit as well as higher taxes to do it. We are just in too big of a hole by both parties. We have been in near endless wars for the past few decades, and spending like crazy everywhere we can. Unfortunately, it is time to pay the piper.
I would consider myself a democrat now. Have voted Republican in the past but not anymore since maga took off.

I think the word socialist and socialism has kind of lost all meaning with how the right tries to weaponize it. I think a better discussion would be to talk about socialist programs and if we are for or against those.

I think healthcare has gotten so out of control in this country I would like to see medicare expanded. By all accounts it would cost less than we currently pay(when including what companies and people pay in premiums and actual costs) by a good amount. I think most people don't even realize how expensive premiums are because businesses cover up the expense by paying a large portion of it.

There are plenty of socialist programs I don't agree with as well. I don't think we should tax billionaires at 100%, but would like to see another tier of the tax system at very high levels.

But I do worry about some cases where people have been sentenced to death and have later proven innocent. Even 1 out of 100 would make the whole thing untenable

This exactly. Everyone yelling about killing all death row inmates would rather kill a few innocent people if it means killing the rest of the murders there.

I would rather not kill the innocent and let them just rot in prison on the hope one day the innocent prove it and get out which happens all the time unfortunately.

I mean I'm not for forced teaching of all things related but this seems like it is just teaching being nice to others. I'm not sure what there is to be against. I think plenty of people here could use a lesson on just being nice to others instead of thinking everyone not like you is the devil.

So disprove it then.

Show me where in Texas schools are forced to teach pride and I will disagree with it.

If it is an optional club or book, I'm on with that. Just like if you have an optional religious club that is fine.

But to force religion to be taught, and only 1 religion, is ridiculous and everyone here would be up in arms if it were any other religion than the one that you happen to believe in.

Haha, it's very obvious you have no clue what you are talking about and are partoti g whatever maga tells you.

Your link doesn't say at all what you think it says if you could read. And tsk tsk, resorting to name calling when losing an argument like you don't know what else to do. I just feel sorry for you.

An opinion piece from the hill, nice lol. Have you ever read an independent news source in your life?

Show me one person who set fire to a church who was then let go and no prosecuted as the "article" promotes is happening over and over. I'll wait. Just try to use your brain even a little, I knows it's hard for you though.

This is the problem with introducing religion to school. You are now having the government push one religion in particular when it should be staying out of it entirely.

If you are bothered if you replace bible won't quran or Christianity with any random religion, you don't support religion in schools, you just support your own beliefs in schools.

Just because you have faith in some religion it doesn't allow you to force your faith on everyone else.

More it is an easy way to push people away from Christianity. I am not religious but I respect all religions and religious beliefs. I will let my children make a religious decision on their own rather than trying to force something on them.

But when stuff like this happens I have to tell them the truth. A year ago I told them a bunch of religious politicians want to force the 10 commandments and Christianity into every classroom. And now they want to force you to leave their religion in a classroom because they know nothing other than than trying to force this on children. It is predatory.

At worst, teach all religions and let kids decide what they want to believe in. But Christians would be terrified of their own kids learning other points of view because they may turn away from Christianity.
quote:

The Bible is the most read and most studied book of all time. Should we just ignore it?

Yes, it is a religious book which should be kept out of schools. It can be studied at the college level.

If taught properly, you probably wouldn't like it, since it should be taught as a literary work of fiction. I would have less problem with that since it could go alongside things like Greek mythology.

But if it is tried to be taught as fact, that is wrong and completely not appropriate for classrooms.
quote:

And?

As long as they teach it as a work of fiction I'm ok. It is so dumb to force schools to teach one particular religion. Imagine how you dumbasses would react if this were the quran instead of the Bible.

lol, start a useless war, have Americans die, and end up having to pay Iran billions of dollars all for what? to get back where we started for a president who assured everyone he was not going to start any wars and was America first. Some people really will believe anything if the "right" people tell them it.
haha, booed to hell. But he will pretend they all loved him and everyone here will believe it because their leader said so. Go watch any video from the stadium, most people booed.
