It’s starting to feel like is all about Gov. Landry.

I understand they don’t like Kiffin, but it seems like these chancellors fear the idea of having a governor this involved in picking university presidents as well as involvement in the athletic department. Apparently the conservative governors of these other states have largely been uninvolved with these matters, and the chancellors want to keep it that way. Personally, I think Landry is doing part of his job. It seemed former president Tate felt pressure from the governors office, and ultimately decided to hit the road. You had an AD who was responsible for some of the worst contracts in collegiate sports history, and he terminated him. All of these people ultimately answer to the Governor. He is certainly within his duties to do these things. This seems to be more about sending a message to Governors to stay out of flagship universities. That’s not the way it works though.

On one hand they say lane kiffin has all the power and is running lsu football and on the other they claim the governor is.

I think its about power. The NCAA and SEC left a door open that the courts had to close. When they tried to flex their muscles by passing rules after the fact, courts, university presidents and ADs, and governors questioned their authority. They didnt like that al all.

I think Kiffin was an easier, more despised, target for them. Landry is less well know outside of LA. They fear the governors of their own states are taking notes on how Landry managed to reshape LSU in just a few months.

The media is all about narrative. They can't make the story about Dr. Rousse or Verge; they are too likable and have kept quiet. Their narrative about Lane isn't advancing the way they need it to, so now they switch to Landry.
The problem is that Moscona pretty much debunked that story yesterday regarding how much Landry is involved with this, or more importantly how much he is not involved. If you didn't see his show, MM reported that in between commercial breaks of his interview with the Gov, Landry was firing away questions trying to find out what was happening because he was in the dark.

That’s the thing none of them want to admit: 15 of the 16 university presidents in the SEC are ultimately answerable, as state employees, to their state governors. It’s not just LSU.

This would be like being upset that the chancellor or AD is having too much control over the Football team.
We all have bosses, and the Governor is the top spot in the state, and LSU is a state school.

It is about Landry's public ousting of Scott Woodward and the new administration's lack of concern about what other schools think about our hiring decisions. Woodward, Alleva, Tate, King Alexander, etc. would have never allowed the hiring of Kiffin (especially in that setting) or the hiring of Wade. The league tries to influence these hiring decisions (as I'm sure they worked with Woodward to make sure Wade was fired). This administration told them to pound sound and they didn't like it.

It’s a state university. What is so hard to understand about the Governor being involved? Governor Landry is the Governor of Louisiana—LSU is Louisiana’s flagship public university, and he is defending it from outside attacks.
What exactly do some of you expect him to do—sit quietly and ignore it while the SEC, NCAA, and others come after LSU? He didn’t create this situation. He’s doing what a Governor should do: stand up for his state’s university.

Wait? The governor, the guy responsible for running the LA Dept of Education, is involved with major decisions impacting the financial well being of the state’s largest university?

It’s a state university so of course the governor should be involved if there is threat of unwarranted and unsolicited attacks on any employee of that university. Any punishment would be fought in court and the SEC is treading carefully. Any further engagement should and will get very ugly.
The only thing that they have to stand on is if an LSU employee encouraged legal action against their own conference. A claim that is likely not going to be proven.
However, earlier this year Ole Miss encouraged their ineligible player to request legal action in order to become eligible. While he didn’t sue the SEC, he likely would have if the SEC intervened. For the latest players they went and actually made up a rule to prevent their eligibility so it’s reasonable that those players would have sued regardless if it was LSU or any other school they chose.

That is a very interesting thought. I never looked at it, that way, but it is sensible to see it in this light.

I did not see that. It doesn’t surprise me though. I’m not trying to say Landry is showing up at football ops or anything. I think he simply saw a poor product last year in football and started asking questions to those who did no more.

I almost brought up Huey P Long. LA has had many governors who have been more involved in the football program. This is not uncharted waters in Louisiana politics.
