People are creaming their pants that Godwin is being interviewed and I can’t figure out why this guy is someone most people on this board would be happy if he got the LSU job. Head coach for 7 years and never even been to Omaha. Why in the world would he be a better candidate than McDonnell, Vitello or lots of other guys who have actually proven they can get to Omaha?

His 2014 OM and 2008 LSU teams were excellent. Bianco and Maineri both owe him a shite of gratitude. Without 2008, 2009 NEVER happens. He developed players like DJ. In fact one could argue DJ had a worse year in 2009 than the previous ones when Godwin was his hitting coach.
Godwin most recently started coached a great series against Vandy with a fraction of the resources. Surely you’re not comparing an AAC school to an SEC or ACC school on resources, facilities, etc? He has done more with less.

You gamble on potential in this case because of where he has been as an assistant and how he has fared in his circumstances as a HC.

One could argue it all they want, they would be wrong. Kind of like arguing Bregman has been better under Dusty Baker than before him.

Because he has done more with less than anyone else. He is at ECU. Do you think ECU gets the same talent year after year as LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisville, Florida, Miss State, Texas, Oklahoma State, Arizona or even TCU. Under that line of thinking, no lower tier program coach or small school coach would ever get hired at a higher level.

There are people on this board claiming that the jump from Ole Miss to LSU in talent and resources is this gigantic leap that would put Bianco over the top. What kind of leap is that for a coach from ECU in that scenario?

I’m not saying Godwin is my top choice but anyone that wants Bianco over Godwin is just either ignorant or has their own personal agenda.

They have 31 tournament appearances all time which is only a few less than LSU. And are the team with the most tournament appearances without making it to Omaha.

They are a good baseball school. But Godwin does have 3 superregional appearances (2016, 2019, 2021) since 2015. That is half of the super regional appearances that ECU has (2001, 2004, 2009 being the other three). They have also hosted 4 regionals in Greenville, 3 since Godwin took over.

From this data, to me, it looks like a good program that got better under Godwin. I may be missing something, though.

Godwin is on par with Vitello. Might even be better. I think he’s more tested
Better? Absurd. Vitello has accomplished more at UT in less time. They were a dumpster fire when he took over. Godwin took over a solid program and maintained it but hasn’t accomplished more than his predecessors.

Godwin is a nice fallback option if we can’t land Corbin/Vitello/McDonnell

I’d be depressed with Corbin. That guy is fantastic, but he’s too old. I’d much prefer Godwin.

It's all relative. He's coaching at ECU and not at an ACC or SEC school.

so why don't people say so he hasn't proven he can win in a conference like the SEC?

Coaches at ECU before Godwin have hosted a regional and made it to super regionals. He hasn’t done anything someone else at ECU didn’t do before him.

Better than one who has only made it once in 20

Outside of Vitello, how many current coaches have made it to Omaha in their first 6 seasons and/or before age 43?

Looks like McDonnell also has, but the point still stands.

Why not? A coach who’s only been once in 21 years is apparently “good enough”.

Keith LeClair had them pretty good, but I think he retired because he had ALS.

Godwin has the best record since LeClaire.

So at worst he brought them back to their peak.

They have a habit of losing good coaches to bigger programs. If they make the right hire they can get to Supers and win their conference.

No one is doing that dipshit. It’s simply a reality check that prior championships aren’t the only variable that predicts future success.

do you have any idea how many years LSU had a baseball program and never went to the CWS pre-Skip?

I think we were Skip's first gig as manager, iirc
