You can’t speak in absolutes like this without knowing the context. If Nuss, Perk, and Big Will go down early, 9-3 might be the best coaching job in BK’s career.

USC, Bama, and Ole Miss might all finish the regular season 12-0 and ranked in the top 3. If we lose to all 3 by last 2nd FGs while dominating everybody else, is that the same 9-3 as last year?

What if Nuss takes a while to get used to being the starter and throws 15+ picks?

Just so many things that can happen to speak in such absolutes. But yes, on paper, in a vacuum, in a season with no major injuries, 9-3 would be disappointing. 8-4 would be bad.

Would be on the hot seat in 2025 after a failure like that

LOL.

He would have 7 years left on a 10 year $100M contract. BK has ZERO concern about the term “hot seat” for at least 2-3 years…if not longer

For some reason many on this board don’t understand that.
I understand our fanbase's desires, and the fact that is salary is significant.
However, wanting something badly and paying a coach a lot of money doesn't make anything come into reality.

I think 9-3 is worst-case acceptable, simply because we're coming off a historically bad defense, and we just sent our Heisman QB and his 2 primary targets to the NFL. That, and consider our schedule. Everyone outside of Baton Rouge considers the Alabama game a loss until proven otherwise; we open with a non-cupcake (USC, with Lincoln Riley already feeling the heat for underperforming). That's 2 possible losses, leaves room for 1 more slip-up in an SEC schedule... Ole Miss and A&M are the likely candidates.

I WANT 10+ wins and a playoff bid, but I think that might be a bit too tall an order for THIS year's team. The defense needs to be a lot better, and not a 1 yr bandaid fix either.

No? Thats just about where we sit if you calculate our w/l per season since 2000 which is why I used the phrase “would be normal”

Exactly. The guy entered a program that was being burnt to the ground and went to the SEC Championship in his first year. Then take a look at the recruiting he is doing and you can see a very good direction going forward.

11-1/10-2 this year would be solid, with a playoff appearance. If it ends up being 9-3 and missing out on the playoffs then it's still not panic time. A big step is coming out against USC and getting a win. That will set the tone.

The team is good enough to make an at-large 5-11 seed this year. Gonna be a lot of close games and need the ball to bounce our way.

Any more than 2 losses is a bad year for a stable program.

That was before conference consolidation. College football fans need to readjust their expectations to the reality of the new era. It’s going to be more about final rankings than a specific record. 12-4 is a top season in the NFL. Going undefeated is going to become more rare. 10-2 is solidly in championship contention and 9-3 is playoff material.

I would allow three losses in any given year (because occasionally weird things happen), but not constantly.

It amazes me how a good portion of our fans don't realize how great of a job LSU is.

We LITERALLY had two VILLAGE IDIOTS win national championships in BR. Any above average coach should AUTOMATICALLY win 10-11 games each year here, and claim a title every few years.

But hey!!!! Lessssss and the cookie monster weren't that bad!!!! Really? Who the MOTHERFLUCK is knocking down the door to hire them, especially Fred who coached the greatest team in college football history in 2019?

How many coaches are available that have won national championships, and why don't our two have a HC job? Hint: maybe it was LSU and not those two DUNCES that were most responsible for the titles.

There is no better combo of recruiting base, fan support, financial support, facilities, and tradition than we have at LSU.

Just imagine if Nick had stayed here 25 years. Does any sane person doubt he would have won at least 10 national championships at LSU?

Remember his first year? They won't 10-3. Everybody was excited because we were ahead of schedule.

Last year, while there were achievements, it was lackluster, and due to ending at 9-3, it was actually a less successful season for the team than the year before. So it was a step back(IMO) which is fine.

This year, there are real, attainable expectations for this team, which would only denote a moderate improvement over the last two seasons. 10-2 is the expectation. It is attainable. 9-3 or 8-4 is not a good year. He won't get fired over it, but that isn't what LSU os paying him for.

The good news is that (barring something major and unforseen) I think 3 losses should be the floor for this team. I think Ole Miss, USC, and aTm are the real road blocks for this season. Bama is going to be a test, but let's be real, Deboer might be a good coach, he isn't Saban, and Alabama isn't trotting out the same teams it used to.

I say let’s wait to see how we do before we get upset. I don’t see how melting early is good.

It's kind of where I'm at. The defense just seemed so far away that I could give him 9-3 but still be disappointed.

People who act like more than two losses in the regular season is below the LSU standard have not paid attention.

From the golden age of tiger football, 2000 until now, LSU has had 15 3 or more loss regular seasons vs 6 2-loss regular seasons (1 NC), 1 1-loss regular season (NC), and 2 undefeated regular seasons (1 NC).

3 loss regular seasons are disappointing but not outside the norm for LSU. If Kelly can change that, he will have moved the program up to a new level of consistency and they will at least be in the conversation for the playoffs as the regular season draws to a close, most likely making it most years.

The August football pre-melt is now a tRant tradition along with the October basketball pre-melt and the February baseball pre-melt.

Will Campbell said it best. Winning 10 games is cool with other schools, not here.

He needs to go 10-2 at the minimum. 9-3 would be a disappointment. 8-4 gets him on the hot seat

With his buyout, 8-4 or 9-3 will not get him fired in year 3.
