If he's in the portal I hope Jay is on this guy.

OF Sawyer Solitaria is currently batting around the .308 mark with an 1.003 OPS. He leads the team with 15 home runs and has racked up 42 RBIs. I had a chance to see him in BR when LSU was playing Kent State, and he was impressive.

I'm no scout but this sounds like the sane type that Jay missed on this season, solid mid-tier stats that you hope translates to SEC ball.

Commit the money to a few obvious big time players, fill out the depth with high ceiling freshman. Use remaining spots on Kent St types, don't start with them.

No big name guy at another SEC school is going to suddenly jump in the portal. Kent State has a solid program.

He was on the preseason golden spikes watch list entering his sophomore season this year. Seems unfair to label him mid tier because he plays a Kent State.

I don't know about big name, but Luke Holman was actually a nice get from Alabama though.

We've seen some big name guys out of schools like Stanford and NC State. Was kind of nice to get Gage Jump out of UCLA.

Kent State could hit when we played them way back in March.

His stats now are basically what we'd want him to have at LSU, but I doubt his production from the MAC will translate to the SEC.

What do mid-tiers
Air Force
Utah Valley
Indiana State
UC SanDiego
all have in common?

It also sounds like the same type that he has hit on in previous seasons

Danny Dickerson had similar stats and he worked out okay

He seems like a solid take to me. I’m more interested in the staff finding the most defensively elite catcher they can find. Even if he hits in the low 200’s would be worth it.

The difference between Solitaria and a guy like Simpson, is that Solitaria performed against power conference competition.

I think it is stupid to think mid-tier players can't transfer and have success. I also think it is stupid to point to a few success examples as justification why it should be expected. Skenes was the #2 player in the portal, Dickinson and Eyanson were preseason all-americans. EVERYBODY wanted these guys. Luis Hernandez was a pleasant surprise and what you hope to get when you sign these guys, but he is the exception.

Mid-tier isn't the problem, hitting 300 (current BA) as a sophomore at Kent St is nice but in my non-expert view, he is the type you fill out late remaining spots with and hope to hit gold.

I hope he is far more concerned with allocating money to upgrade the pitching staff than he is to players like this

I completely agree on bringing in at least 2 pitching stud starters, but we could use a big bat OF and a 3rd baseman. I hope we luck out and get most of our recruits to campus this year.

We need to start from scratch. Let’s find a major level 14U team and work with them for the next 4 years. We’d be unstoppable.

The vast majority of the time portal recruiting does not start after a guy enters the portal. It starts BEFORE he does. I can promise you if not now, then very soon agents for big name SEC players are already making inquiries into the free agency market for their clients. It's not all that uncommon, though it may not be public knowledge, for guys to have already agreed to terms with another school BEFORE they formally enter the portal. Yes, that's technically "tampering". But when everyone is doing it you better being doing it too. Otherwise, you risk being left behind.

I know personally of a player who is currently a weekend starter on a good ACC team who was previously on an SEC staff. He wasn't formally in the portal but for a day or two. However, he was being "recruited" by other programs, including other SEC programs, for weeks prior to entering the portal. The coaches weren't the ones making direct contact with him. It was backchannels...agents, former teammates, current teammates who had already agreed to transfer to another school.

I'm sure Jay (through intermediaries) is already gauging the interest to transfer of big name SEC guys.

We’re gonna need both. We have a nice foundation of returning offensive players, they’re not good enough to really compete without some additions. And obviously we need both TOR rotation guys and bullpen depth. I sure hope Sherrin comes back.
I think he could take a big jump next season.

I’d like to grab the best starting pitcher available and the best offensive one. Or a really good one who is plays SS.
I don’t know how much money we’ll have or how much of it those top guys would cost,
but we’re gonna have to take some
chances to fill out the rest of the roster. We want guys who’ve been productive and/or guys with stuff that Jay think so we can unlock. And I’d rather take a chance on the guy in the OP than a Simpson, like previously mentioned.

But a huge part is going to be evaluation. Hopefully if we don’t somehow magically pull the SECT championship out of our asses, Jay and staff can do more in depth evaluations than he was allowed to last year.

But every year there’s going to have to be gambles. Gambles on guys from smaller schools. Gambles on guys already in the program to continue to develop and making jumps. But hopefully we can mitigate those gambles with more money and more in depth evals. We’ll see how Jay handles it.

Also, I’ve never been a big high school recruiting guy. We’ve lost so many top guys to the draft that I became apathetic to it. Do we have any guys coming in that should be immediate impact guys? Any Curiels, Milams,
Evans, Herrings, Jarred Joneses?

I’m skeptical of there being a lot of Hurds, Jumps, Holmans being available from power schools/conferences. That TOR guy I mentioned us getting is more likely to be an Eyanson, not a guy from an SEC school or UCLA. Those dudes are gonna get paid enough by their current schools to make jumping to another SEC school not worth it. I do think that Jay leverages the LSU brand, our history of winning in Omaha, and the Box experience about as well as possible. So he’s probably got as good a chance as anyone of pulling an SEC guy. But those have gotten fewer and farther between and will likely only get even more fewer and farther.
