How do you know it’s time for a career change

I’ve been in an industry for a while now and I once thought I loved it and the people in it. But lately I just don’t feel the same.
The people I thought were friends just aren’t that. Perhaps I over share and it can come back to bite me. Is it time to move on?

friends <> co-workers

It’s time to make a career change when you believe another career will make you happier than your current one and won’t cause you financial hardship that would outweigh that happiness.

Get actual friends and hobbies and this isn’t a problem.
Reminds of that dork here that quit his job because not enough people came to the office for him to small talk with

When your current employer fires you...this is clue # 1.

this can happen to you anywhere. Quit being dramatic about it. . It sounds like your problem is you and thats going to follow you wherever you go.

If you're already thinking about leaving, then it's past time to leave.

when you want to change and have a viable option to change

I am living breathing newly employed proof that this is a safe space to over share. Lay it on us, we’re here for it.

I've sold insurance for nearly 17 years. I've tried the management route but it wasn't for me because I couldn't stand being the one they all came to for answers in a system that's run by barely educated ignorant fools and currently being taken over by today's young retarded generation.
I went back to the sales side of it but after nearly two decades of mostly really, really dumb management and sales pressure designed by rules that genuinely force the agent to not act in the customer's best interest, I'm numb.
I'm numb to the pressure, I'm numb to the constant stress, I'm numb to the constant lie after lie after lie by management. It's affected me to the point where I am just going through the motions now and have started a side business that I'm working balls to the wall outside of my fulltime job to get up and off the ground. I'm really considering walking away from insurance and sales in general to run this business. I'm going to make a 10th of my previous income for a bit, and it's going to be tough for a while, but in the end it's what lights a fire inside me now. A fire that I've missed for years.
The hope of this new venture of mine is honestly the only thing keeping me going right now. I'm so over the insurance industry because as bad as it sucks for a consumer, you should see how the sausage is made! It's unbelievably bad nowadays.
How do you know it's time for a career change? I'd say that when the fire that used to burn inside of you for your job is absolutely gone and you genuinely - GENUINELY - no longer see the light at the end of that particular career tunnel, it's time. That's where I am right now in my life. I've reached the point in my life where making my own rules, building my own dream, and working in a way that facilitates me being there for my kids and wife more is much more valuable to me than the golden handcuffs of a steady paycheck.

When you’re unhappy with your current career

sounds like it is time to hit the turnpike if you are asking the question

We don’t work to make friends. We work to make ends meet. You can’t determine whether a job is still good for you or not, based on whether people at your work are your friends.

Right there with you, after 27 yrs in the biz I am done. Walked away twice and my third spot confirmed it was time to do something else.
Good Luck TD

You don't have friends at work. They are co-workers and that's all. Do your job and keep your head down. If you begin to hate your job, move on if you can.

Don't you think you sort of answered your own question in the initial post?

Co-workers? Not a big deal. Friends from high school or college? Don’t care.
Am I wrong for that? Maybe..probably. I guess I’m lucky enough to have built a family that enjoys being around each other, and I prioritize that so I don’t lose it.

Sounds like there is too much overlap between your work life and your personal life. It is okay to make small talk about how your weekend went, etc, but people just aren't interested in hearing every detail of your life.
And…don’t be fricking anyone from work…

I had the same job for 30 years. If it makes good money and provides your family with what you need stick it out. I’ll give you a tip from an old dude. When you leave the company it’s about like graduating. You won’t see many of these people ever again. Keep your family close and enjoy them. No one is promised tomorrow. Hang in there and good luck!
