re: How do you feel about CBK now - REAL Question!

I was worried about the fit but I was worried most about the OC hire. Wasn’t crazy about hiring Denbrock, he’s had some games where I thought he should have adjusted faster, but overall, he’s done a “good” job. Especially the Florida, ole Miss and Bama games, he adjusted the scheme, routes and play calling to help JD after the Tennessee debacle and now has to find a way to help JD execute better against zones.

I was always positive in kelly but not feel like I was under estimating his ability to turn thing around
It feels like we’ve actually come too far too fast

I thought our floor this year was 8-4 and the ceiling 10-2. In all honesty, I didn’t think we would achieve the ceiling so I’m quite impressed with the teams accomplishments. My concern about cbk when he was hired, and still is a concern, is his offensive scheme and poor record of high-level qb play. ND never had a top-tier offense nor championship caliber qb play. I still have those concerns…

I've not seen a team improve week-to-week like this LSU squad. With Miles or O, what you saw week one was more or less indicative of what you were going to see in week 1
Definitely with les. With O, at least before 2020, the best thing he did was make improvements. It all just fell apart after January 2020.

I said 11 - 1. Losing to bama. Boy was i wrong

For most who didn't like the hire, it was Ageism. They wanted a young coach closer to their own age.
They didn't look at CBK's coaching resume, starting from his earliest days, which proved that he knew how to coach winning football.

I thought it was going to be Les Miles 2.0 TBH. Average 9-10 wins per season with no playoff or SECCG appearances. Glad I’ve been wrong so far.

I was a big Aranda supporter. I knew the team needed discipline and felt Dave was the glue that held the 2019 team together. Kelly was a huge jerk when he first got to Notre Dame. He has mellowed a lot. I expected 6-6 0r 7-5. After the Florida State game I was thinking 5-7. He has far exceeded my expectations.

The hire felt uninspiring and a little boring. Almost felt like we settled on Kelley after missing out on someone else. Shortly after the hire I began to feel much better about it as it was nice to see someone with actual structure come into the building.

His career arc was similar to Saban’s
In some ways. Kelly got to a head coaching job much quicker, had NFL experience prior to being a head coach then got a P5 HC job as his second gig.
But similar in that they both were successful at a few HC jobs before moving to a premier destination.
Note that the majority of the "Saban era" and his dominance of college football came at his second premier coaching destination. LSU is BKs second premier coaching destination. Let the Kelly era begin!

There wasn't a more accomplished, realistic, candidate available. My preference was Riley simply because of the age difference, but there were no complaints with Kelly whatsoever. LSU's previous three HCs had come to the school with mild to zero success prior to taking the job. All three left with National Championships. Given Kelly's resume I felt the odds were strong he would be the 4th...just not right away.
I thought people were severely undervaluing LSU going into the season because most outside of Louisiana didn't realize just how bad a coaching job Orgeron did. I knew this team was still in the top 25% of talent in the league. Now they actually had someone who knew what he was doing running the show. I thought 8-4 was a reasonable prediction. But that was with a FSU win. I revised to 7-5 after that loss because I didn't think, with the schedule ahead, this team could do better than .500 in SEC play.
While I'm very surprised LSU will be heading to Atlanta in year 1, I'm not surprised, at all, Kelly is having great success. The guy has been a HC for 30 years and won everywhere he's been. Combine that with the only program in the last 30 years who has had 3 different HCs win championships and it was a very safe bet Kelly was going to do great at LSU.
In short, I feel the same as I did the day he was hired. The only surprise is how quickly the high level success has come.

I was hoping for a coach that was a little younger. But hey, what do I know….????

Honestly I didn't follow ND that closely, but knew he was a good coach. I thought 8-4 was the ceiling under near perfect conditions.
What he's done year one can not be overstated. It's not just the results, but the buy in and culture change. I did not think he could change the culture this quick because he was coming from outside the SEC and was the definition of an outsider in general. You'd have to be brain dead to not be excited about the direction and future of the program now.
I said a couple weeks ago that I thought as much as Kelly being here helps LSU it will help Kelly and it shows. I've read articles and listened to sports shows that say Kelly is different. More relaxed, likeable and seems to be enjoying coaching. LSU needed him and he needed LSU.

I always thought it was a solid hire and fully expected he would win at least one NC here. I never expected this kind of turn around though. Are we the greatest team ever? No. But that has far more to do with depth and being young at certain positions than anything else, but we are a team that on any given day can compete with and even beat any other team out there. That’s where having good coaching comes in.

I’ve said a number of times since he was announced, that based off résumé, he was a home run hire. He’s done nothing, to this point in time, to change my opinion.
Taking over a team from a fired coach with a under 500 record combined for the two previous years and winning the west after they were picked to finish 5th is quite the accomplishment for a first year head coach. I hope he understands the minds of SEC football fans that when you show you can accomplish something they are going to expect it pretty much all the time. Don’t believe me, look at the Bama fans and their reaction to very close road L’s after what Nick has done for them in the past decade.

Didn't really doubt could he be successful at LSU. Am very, very surprised it has been this quickly

I was thrilled with the hire and still am.
*I'm not a fricking idiot. I realized the value of Kelly day 1

Ah, I see. I was about to ignore this, but I see this is a "real" question.

I have been back and fourth on him this year. Have to give it to him though, his teams get stronger through 4 quarters and progressively get better throughout the year.
I’m looking forward to next year’s cultural continuity and what he does with the S&C during the off-season. The team should really take a jump developmentally next year.
