How can an OL unit be elite at pass protection yet putrid at run blocking?

I’m admitting ignorance as I didn’t play football at a high level.

But how is this extreme disparity possible? They put on a masterclass protecting Nuss yet couldn’t push a clothesline of wet blankets for our RBs.

Why is this?

This is grossly oversimplified, but in run blocking you're pushing forward, in pass blocking you're creating a pocket by stepping backward and to the side. Totally different technique.

I get that but isn’t it weird that this group can be so good at dropping and holding yet borderline bad at pushing?

Just bizarre IMO

It’s more scheme IMO. I don’t see us pulling and running power much.

Not really. It’s two completely different things. One is more about being able to stay in front of people trying to get around you and the other is trying to push them into a completely different direction then where they are trying to go. Sometimes that direction is straight back too.

Zone read with a running qb is a much bigger part of today’s modern offensive football. With Nuss unwilling to run even when on the rare times he climbs the pocket and has green space were easy to defend in the run game.

We do not have elite backs either, Durham has some promise but is likely a late round pick.

My question with this is why are people (national media) still proclaiming Campbell and Jones 1st rounders when they seem to have such a clear flaw to their game.

Someone else mentioned our scheme and is that basically what talking heads attribute to their struggles or do NFL teams think they can just easily fix that?

a. The problem with our running game is the interior OL, not our tackles

b. NFL coaching will fix any problems. Brad Davis is a recruiter, not a good technical OL coach.

No not really, in the same way steph curry might be great at shooting but not great at driving or someone can be great at chipping but not great at putting. You can be great at pass blocking and not great at run blocking, its just a different part of your game. Also our run scheme isnt the best.

The way LSU run blocks is not all about pushing. In fact, no teams can just push Dlines out of the way; they have to use the strength and momentum of the defenders against them.

IMO, it comes down to this: Kelly’s offense is made for a running QB. It doesn’t have the be Jayden Daniels, but it should be a QB who can run as well as Joe Burrow. Our offense relies heavily on RPO and Read Option. The RPO is fine with Nuss, but the Read Option is a joke because, for some reason or another, Nuss will not pull the ball and run. He has the athletic ability, but he does not have the inclination. If he did we’d be gashing people with our run game.

I mean, they didn’t have to run block for two years with Daniels at QB.

It’s not something that you pick up quickly.

Besides, Ole Miss has an elite d-line.

It’s not weird at all. It’s two different mindsets. Pas-protecting is more reactionary, whereas run-blocking is more attacking. It’s very difficult for some guys to switch between the two. Plus you have to make them look the same pre-snap. That said, we should be better at it. The issue is mainly on the interior OL, and the two veterans, specifically, should be better. You expect mistakes from a rookie center.

Chester is weak as hell from what I saw there, constantly being pushed back, pathetic to be big like that and can't hold your ground. Smh

I think it’s our running scheme and not as much our inability to run block. We need to have more creative running plays with misdirection blocking schemes.
