re: Realistic look at 2027 baseball roster
Posted by Tigerfan14 on 5/23/26 at 8:07 am to N2daWild
Pitching wise, they just really have to focus on guys who have command. We have a ton of guys who have elite stuff, that have top of the rotation potential, but we HAVE to have multiple Cooper Moore type guys who can simply throw strikes when they need to.
Everyone is over guys like Rizy, but I don’t mind bringing them back and continuing to try and develop them. The staff just has to do better at balancing things out and having some guys that are opposites of that profile.

Just looked at his career stats and that’s a really impressive job in developing him by NSU. He literally got better in everything every season.
I could definitely see him getting into a SEC facility and really taking off with the resources. HOPEFULLY

Give me ABS all day every day and take the ball-strike calling away from the umpires across all of college and pro baseball. There’s too much money in play these days for human error to factor into outcomes
The ABS challenge system is perfect. I get wanting some human element in the game, but there’s way too much invested in these sports to have umpires who are “off” all night with inconsistent strike zones.

I’m pretty sure he waved the white flag when he called out his own roster construction.
Exactly. He also immediately started playing the young guys and stuck with them for the most part, which is a decision that I think will pay off in the long run. He may not have truly “given up” but he definitely understood it wasn’t going to turn around.
re: Why am I supposed to be so mad at Wade signing "pros"?
Posted by Tigerfan14 on 5/20/26 at 9:34 am to Lsuhoohoo
It’s funny how making a mockery of the current RULES gets Wade chastised. I don’t like what he’s doing, but it’s the NCAA’s fault, not Wade’s. If they don’t like it, change the rule.

Transfer portal has made college sports worse period. Esp made it harder on the coaches. I have zero sympathy for players this day n age. I can’t imagine trying to be a coach and build a program when there’s a revolving door for players. Every year you have to start over basically. The whole system is a joke.
For a program like LSU, it benefits them significantly more. Feel much worse for the small schools who have done a great job of identifying and developing talent, just to help a kid get a big payday at a large program.
I think the big issue with building this years team is that it seems like we kind of just grabbed some middle to lower in guys that were available. The past few years we were clearly tampering to get some elite guys to enter the portal then sign them. I know we unsuccessfully tried for a couple guys last year, like Ace Reese, but that’s why we ended up with Dardar, Simpson, etc.
Since our offseason will start this week, I’d expect a different outcome this year.

I was about to say this. They have like 2-3 targets stacked up at 60ish yards. If it’s just you there, you could definitely walk back an extra 10. That park was great for me to get my 60 years pin zeroed in.

Going to be very interesting to see how these guys translate if we build a team full of euro guys. I’d assume it’s a step down in competition, but it’s also probably a totally different pace and structure to the game.

One of the macro trends for this draft is that every player pool except high school pitchers is underperforming. College bats are soft, college arms are soft, and high school bats don't normally pick up steam in the spring because of variable nature of the competition. That means there will probably be a lot more money thrown at high school pitchers in this draft than normal.
A college second baseman hitting .296 with 8 HR is being mocked as a top 10 pick… that’s how weak this college crop is…

In 23 we also had a borderline forst round pick that didn’t even pitch. Two of our most important pitchers were really draft guys, either. Our bullpen came up huge last year too. It’s not just losing 2 starters that’s the problem, which is the point. The whole staff sucks this year and nearly everyone we returned regressed. That doesn’t happen by chance.

How many guys really progressed in year two or three with yeski? Kade Anderson and maybe Schmidt? If we don’t hit on the portal or get a freshman that’s instantly ready, you can guarantee that they will be useless by the next years end.

He's not perfect and yes, losing 2 starters no team is going to overcome that. You can't deny the numbers though with pitchers he's been working with for years. Maybe 1-2 guys from last year hasn't regressed. Everyone else did with some staggeringly bad pitching numbers. He's not above criticism and don't think he's safe to keep his job either. In order to be this bad it's a lot more than just losing 2 starting pitchers and this is definitely partly on Yeskie's shoulders just as it is Jay.
Well said. The fact that this pitching staff has legit talent, but has been this bad is certainly not a good look for a coach. Based off of pure talent, I could see why Jay thought this was his best pitching staff yet. Problem is, if you can’t get the ball over the plate, having swing and miss pitches becomes irrelevant. The amount of pitchers who are averaging more than 1 free base per inning on this staff is pathetic.
Yeskie won’t get fired, but he might find a new job after the season.

Agree wholeheartedly. Like others have a little more confidence because he has done it before. But I guess if this “plan” or strategy for this year doesn’t pan out as in underwhelms or objectively doesn’t meet the standard, I could atleast understand the logic it’s not totally flawed or coming from Pluto.
Not saying he shouldn’t get heat, because it’s kind of an insane strategy, but I’m confident in Wade making adjustments. Year after year he talks about making mistakes and how he will fix it. He’s not a guy that’s going to keep doing the same wrong thing. That’s what I always liked about him.

His regression from showing so much upside last season is concerning.
Last year he still put a ton of people on base, he just had some Houdini acts to get out the inning without damage. There was one point this year where he was better than the prior season in every metric except runs allowed. It’s like the hitter who hits .300 with a ton of bloopers and perfectly placed ground balls. It’s not a repeatable.

Undoubtedly, I read your statement of "Looking through pitching stats last night" as meaning yesterday, I can see now that is not what you meant. On the year, they were at 61.45% strikes thrown rate. Still in the average good range. But I think the timing of the pitching breakdowns has been what has cost us, just like the lack of timely hitting has been an issue in many of the losses.
Right. And being able to “throw strikes” is a term that has more to do with not throwing balls than it does about striking people out. That’s why guys like Cooper Moore get labeled a “strike thrower” even when his K% wasn’t as high at Kansas.
LSU probably has 6+ guys who could be first round picks if they had Moore’s command

We gave up 6 hits and 1 walk with 11 strikeouts yesterday afternoon, 89 strikes in 141 total pitches(63.1%), which is average to very good(anything above 60% is good, 65% is the sweet spot, 70% is elite). we gave up 4 and 4 walks (plus 1 hit batter) with 11 strikeouts last night, 84 strikes in 137 pitches(61.3%), again average. The only guy who really "underperformed" was the true freshman, Paz. These were the wrong games to complain about pitching, except maybe Sheerin hitting a guy.
Ok. Now look at the entire season because that’s what I was looking at. This is a thread about the future of LSU baseball, not the May 2nd double header.

Our weekend rotation should be set next year with Schmidt, Paz and Evans. May entertain moving Evans back to the pen or perhaps a hybrid role ala Louis Coleman.
Looking through pitching stats last night, it’s pretty insane how bad this staff is at throwing strikes… so many dudes with Friday night talent that have little league control. Couldn’t believe how many guys averaged more than one free pass per inning.
If we can have some of these guys improve to at least average control, the staff could be elite.

I wonder how this affects the NIL approach this offseason. It might lead to bigger checks for unproven talent vs putting resources towards transfers.
On a similar note, keeping up with HS hitters who choose going pro vs college is getting brutal. Most of these guys can’t even crack .200 the first year or two in minor league baseball now that they consolidated the leagues. The pitchers are adapting much better, but it’s getting to the point that drafting a HS bat is the riskiest play you can make. You obviously get outliers like Konnor Griffin, but it’s literally 1-2 per draft that are catching on quick.

Even small schools were giving small impermissible gifts… we see now for sure that a player will go literally anywhere if the pay is right. That’s not new. I remember years ago, football insiders would talk about kids coming on visits that turned the coaches off because all they were worried about was how much money they can get, before NIL. And when I say insiders, I don’t mean the random TD accounts that are 6 months old saying they have the answers. I mean the paid sites who had guys that the writers verified to be legit and knew personally.
