Diesel- I was thinking the same thing last night! Memories of that 2012 Stony Brook team that was so disciplined at the plate- almost like they had 3 eyes..

They would have advanced from several other Regionals.

By their placement they would be # 20 seed of the 64 tournment teams. May have actually been better than that.

Weren't they the 3 seed? And ASU the 2? So I think they were lower than that. Most projections didn't have them getting an at-large bid... they won their conf tourney to get in.

USM was a really good team in the regionals. Not so much during the regular season, losing their last 4 weekend series. As noted, they had to win their tourney to get in the playoffs. Where was this great hitting coach all season long? Just saying.

Thanks, everyone.

I didn’t make it to this regional. I did go to the 04 one as a high school kid at the old Box. Nobody does college baseball better.

I appreciate the compliments. We are proud of this team. The last two weeks were the best we have looked all season. Almost everyone was playing to the best of their abilities. We have always made pitchers work but our hitters were dialed in this weekend with the uptick in competition. The guys were smart and not afraid of big moments on a big stage when some of our more talented teams have crapped their pants in similar situations.

What ended up doing us in—aside from good competition—was just not having enough talent on the mound or at the plate 1-9.

It’s amazing how these other teams can find hitting coaches that seem to teach a solid approach. It’s too bad you’re only allowed to hire a volunteer coach as hitting coach or we might be able to hire someone to do the same. Wonder how those schools are pulling it off

i don't think i can ever recall a team fouling off so many pitches. every at bat was excruciatingly long. they were legit at the plate.

The effects of a legit hitting coach?

Keltic is right.

What you saw this weekend is not representative of what we saw most of the year. They have been good at making pitchers work and fouling off pitches. But they also K’d a ton all year.

I would say that what you saw from guys like Montenegro, Guidry, and of course Wallner is an accurate representation of how good they are.

Went back and looked at the play-by-play:

Southern Miss hit 48 foul balls last night
LSU hit 17 foul balls last night

They were a scrappy bunch.

yet they had the same number of wins heading into the regional with less losses than LSU.
They didn’t start that freshman that pitched against ASU that first game u til their conference tournament where he led 3 other pitchers to no-no Rice.
They had some shitty series.

AND LSU WAS 4-5 their last 3 series! So just give them the respect they deserve. They were a scrappy bunch and well coached team.

Montenegro was the best hitter in that tournament. He is a sophomore. They had a first round pick right fielder who had a tough one against LSU pitching, but so did Duplaintis the forst game against their better pitchers.

I wish we played Southern Miss more often. I remember we use to play them every year in the Wally Pontiff Classic but then we decided to start playing ULoL instead. Would love to do a home and home series with them. They also may be the best 2 strike hitting team I’ve ever seen

A number 3 seed is between 33 and 48 overall. Similar to a 9 through 12 seed in basketball.

"Same number of wins as LSU and less losses"? Are you serious? How many games did USM play against teams in the Top 20? The Top 10? Where would they finish in the SEC West? In the league? Do they qualify for Hoover? Where Vandy, Moo St. the hawgs, LSU is waiting for them? They played good scrappy baseball here and I respect them for that. I am simply responding to all the compliments for their hitting coach, the insinuation being he is better than LSU's.If I am not mistaken, LSU's bats led the SEC in hitting in league games. If wrong, mea culpa.

Fun and scary to watch.

The pitcher did an amazing job.

The hitting was crazy...very few easy grand outs or pop ups.

Matt Wallner might have been my favorite right fielder to heckle. Dude took it like a champ

One major similarity between LSU and USM....hatred of Ole Miss and and dislike of Miss. State. Being regionally close in proximity LSU is the adopted SEC school most USM fans to pull for.
