I don’t know about Rocker. I do know that David Price famously was on an academic scholarship even back in the mid 00s

Wtf is the criteria for great if Mainieri and O’Sullivan don’t meet it?!
You people are insane.

Keltic is right.
What you saw this weekend is not representative of what we saw most of the year. They have been good at making pitchers work and fouling off pitches. But they also K’d a ton all year.
I would say that what you saw from guys like Montenegro, Guidry, and of course Wallner is an accurate representation of how good they are.

Thanks, everyone.
I didn’t make it to this regional. I did go to the 04 one as a high school kid at the old Box. Nobody does college baseball better.
I appreciate the compliments. We are proud of this team. The last two weeks were the best we have looked all season. Almost everyone was playing to the best of their abilities. We have always made pitchers work but our hitters were dialed in this weekend with the uptick in competition. The guys were smart and not afraid of big moments on a big stage when some of our more talented teams have crapped their pants in similar situations.
What ended up doing us in—aside from good competition—was just not having enough talent on the mound or at the plate 1-9.

Wood threw 169 pitches that day.
The day before that, he threw 2 innings and 30 pitches.
The really bad thing with Garrido that was a little unique was how often he would use his starters in relief roles. Chance Ruffin was his ace that year and he made several relief appearances. And with relievers like Wood or J. Brent Cox a few years before, it wasn’t just the innings pitched, it was also the appearances. 44 appearances in a year is brutal for a guy unless maybe they are only situational, match-up type pitchers.
Not to speak ill of the dead but Augie was overrated a-hole. He recruited elite talent but blew out his pitchers for his win total and his small-ball fetish probably kept that program from winning more titles.

Not only that, we brought in a righty who grooves 92 mph fastballs right down the middle.

Funny you said 150. I’m pretty sure Lewis did throw 150 for his JUCO team last year.

Congrats, Tigers.
Honestly, I couldn’t be more proud of USM. This team had major flaws and was our least talented in 5-6 years. They were not afraid of the moment one bit this weekend, though.
Just didn’t have the talent to get past y’all.
Best of luck.

Actually thought about him after I said Strickland or Wright.
Typical soft tossing lefty.
The only hope I may have with him is that you guys are used to SEC power arms and struggle to adjust to mid-80s and junk.

Oh and I can’t remember if I mentioned Och in this thread. They shut him down in March.
Warren wouldn’t pitch. Doubt he made the trip.

Stuart and Manley are redshirts.
Not sure if you had Boyd on there—he hasn’t pitched. Took a RS last year for surgery but apparently still had issues.
Jackson has pitched once in like 2-3 months. Not sure if he’s there but I doubt it.

Wallner has had hip and forearm issues when he has pitched.
He was expected to be a weekend guy for us this year, throwing mid-90s and developed a splitter. He experienced soreness before the season and my understanding is that his team said no more pitching (and I can’t blame them).

Och is hurt according to message board posters.

Powers started today and got shelled.
He’s been pitching injured all year and wasn’t especially good to begin with.

Don’t know how many of these guys made the trip.
A couple of those are hurt/haven’t pitched in months.
Strickland or Wright are most likely.

Oh, god. No one. You may see Jarod Wright? Maybe Mason Strickland? Neither are good.
Without seeing a roster of who made the trip, I couldn’t guess.
Y’all are going to hang at least 15 on us.
The only prayer this team had was winning the first 2 games and even then, I doubted they had the pitching to finish a regional off.
I’m honestly glad that we come right back and play so our bats don’t cool down.

Powell is a pitch to contact guy.
Ball coming to the plate at a serious downward trajectory with his height.
Fastball, cutter, curve are his main pitches.
No change, so he has no real out pitch to lefties. Y’all are not a good match up for him.

Powell is our ace but his upside isn’t close to Shepard’s.
Powell is a pitch-to-contact righty. Mostly works 86-88 with the FB plus a good cutter and an okay curve. Tall kid at 6-7 throwing downhill, so the ball has a downward trajectory.
He really should be a Saturday or Sunday guy for us but we didn’t have anyone else to put in that spot. He’s had a great year and has given us more than we could have expected.
His location has to be pinpoint. Small margin of error because his stuff isn’t that great. If he gets too much of the plate, things get ugly.
As a USM fan, I’m not too optimistic about how he will fare against a good lineup tomorrow.
