I'm in this camp, but only because my confidence in Jay after last year was insanely high. He'd just won his 2nd title in 3 years, this time without the star power of the 2023 team (Anderson & Eyanson hadn't blazed thru the minors yet) and appeared to have mastered college baseball the way Nick Saban had mastered college football.

Looking at it now, the margins are thinner than they appeared when the team walked off the field after Game 2 against Coastal Carolina. At that time, it seemed even in a bad/unlucky season, the worst Jay could do was .500 in the SEC and a regional appearance because he's just that good.

Now we know the bottom is quite a bit lower than that, but I expect if Jay stays at LSU long-term he will have more seasons closer to the top of the range than the bottom. But instead of a natty every other year, maybe it's every 5 years. Still puts him in the elite category, and every other school would pay a lot of money for those results.

Not at all. The range of swings from elite to good to average have been amplified by the portal and the high percentage of turnover from year to year. Some years you are going to get a transfer class the gels and plays great, and some years you are going to see what you did this year. The "it" factor never materializes.

Fans need to adjust their perspective on what the new normal is and what constitutes a floor.

Yes and No. He Royally F'd up this Roster and this Season. He admitted that so I trust he will get it right. In that same token take away the 2 Nattys and he is a Sub .500 Coach in the SEC. I would like to see the program be more consistent. Even Paul Manure had us as a National Seed for 6 years straight. But, if this is the trend of getting 2 Nattys every 5 years I will take it!

Not at all. I’ve been watching sports long enough to know that every season is hit and Miss. you can’t take anything for granted…good or bad. Pre-season expectations have no bearing on what the reality of the season will bring. As long as the coach is able to bring in quality players consistently, there is a good chance of success.

There is far too much luck involved in baseball to say that because your team did not realize lofty pre-season expectations, that the coach is not good.

As I often say, there are no midseason trades in college.

We have the wrong players and no amount of coaching them up can fix that.

Need to see who he keeps and brings in next year.

Questions?
Sure. What are you going to do to be sure this never happens again?

I don't expect a championship every other year, but I do expect (at LSU) to be able to field a competitive team.

Another words, your take up there is dumb, as if one should never question a coach again after winning a couple of titles. shite don't last forever. Just look at our pitching coach.

If he hadn’t done what he did at the end of the year, yes. A touch.

But his actions matched his words, so no.

No. My confidence in Jay has not been shaken.

I think it is just the unreasonable expectations of the Tiger Nation creating too much hype. We all need to get over 'IT'. 'IT' being our unreasonable expectations for a group of talented young men. Given LSU Baseball's level of success over the previous five years, it was highly probable that a drop off would occur this year or next. It happens to champions in football. It happens to champions in basketball. It happens in ALL sports. Lets face it, it happened to LSU Baseball this year! Cheers!

Nope

If we’re terrible in 2027 then I’ll start to wonder.

Here's the list of coaches that have won multiple national championships at LSU:

Skip Bertman
James Perry Cole (Golf in the 1940s)
Pat Henry
Dennis Shaver
Jay Johnson

That's it. That's the list.

None. shite happens. I’m more interested to see how he uses this year to learn and how he bounces back with the ‘27 team. That’s way more important than this one outlier season. But still, we’re going to have to overhaul a ton of this roster. It’s gonna be hard to put together a CWS championship roster.

But we need to see a huge improvement, not just in record, but in how we play. Now, if we’re not back to competing for titles in ‘28, then I’ll start to lose confidence. But his 2 NCs have given him a ton of political capital. With me, anyway. He’s got a super long leash with me. People oftentimes forget that you can’t just fire a guy for not meeting very lofty standards unless you have a replacement in mind that you’re confident will be better able to. I currently don’t know if that human exists.

I would be shocked if LSU is ever this bad again on Johnson’s watch and he deserves every chance to correct it. But with that said, some of you are severely understating how bad it has actually been. They didn’t just fail to realize the “lofty preseason expectations”, they have failed to realize the bare minimum expectations.

At this point, mediocre might be an improvement.
