I used to run a restaurant he and his wife came into a lot. Great people. Mr. Jim was very kind to anyone that came up to him and his wife is very sweet too.

He was on my flight up to ATL, he and his wife were heading to Canton, for the HOF ceremonies. We talked all the way up.

We chatted for about 10 minutes. He went to introduce himself and I told him there was no need because he was one of my all-time favorite LSU and Green Bay Packer players. He seemed to appreciate the sentiment.
He could not have been nicer. He must have been in his late 70's then and he still looked like he could put a helmet on and line up and run a few plays.

Jim Taylor was not just an outstanding LSU Tiger, but also a tremendous Green Bay running back.

I'm guessing somewhere in Metairie near Lafreniere Park ?? I was around 12-13 yrs. old and spending the night at a friend's house who resided in this vicinity. Mr. Taylor and his wife came over to play cards with my friend's parents. He was a simple, down to earth guy. You'd never know he was an LSU and NFL all-time great based on his personae.

Jimmy Taylor is a true Baton Rouge legend. He gets overshadowed because Billy Cannon came right behind him, but he’s Baton Rouge through and through.
He grew up in the neighborhood just West of Dufroq Elementary. He had a paper route all through the matrix back in those city blocks.
He attended BRHS and started his way to glory. He was a multi sports star who hated to lose. At LSU he helped Dietzel’s rebuilding efforts which culminated in a NC right after Taylor graduated.
Of course at Green Bay he was a key player in the Lombardi dynasty. He was all pro of course, but his work ethic and pride helped lead his teams to immortality.

When I was maybe 12 years old, Jimmy Taylor was speaking at some function in my hometown. The man who had organized it was a good friend of ours, so he invited me over to meet Mr. Taylor.
He could not have been nicer. In retrospect, I realize I was peppering him with questions about LSU and the Packers, but he was so generous with his answers and his time. He even handed me his Super Bowl ring to try on. It was so big, it fit on my thumb. Such a nice man.

LOL, in Hester's dreams....and I love Hester. My Dad went to Baton Rouge High with Taylor. Said he was the toughest guy there, nobody messed with Jimmy. Funny story, NFL HOF Sam Huff ( Giants ) was playing Taylor. Huff kept telling Taylor " you stink Taylor " every time he would tackle him. Taylor wound up scoring and asked Huff... " how do I smell now Sam "?

Off season, Jimmy Taylor lived on Baird Dr. in middle-class Magnolia Woods in BR (how times have changed!). He would answer the door to us kids, handing out autographed photos. He was why I was a Packers fan before the Saints were born; of course he was on the first 1967 Saints team. Moved about a mile away to Walden neighborhood and was frequent walker around the neighborhood, super friendly great ambassador of our city.

Jim spoke to the Tiger Gridiron Club a number of times. He told great stories and was always generous with his time. One story he told stands out. The Packers were playing the Giants. Early in the game Sam Huff and the Giants stuffed the run game. More than once Huff tackled Jim, fell on him and with his foul breath told Jim “ Taylor, you stink.” Finally the Pack got going and Jim raced into the end zone as Huff trailed behind him. After he scored Jim ran up to Huff and told him “Hey Sam, how do I smell from here??

When I was growing up, he was good friends with the family who used to live across the street from me. When he would come over for parties, BBQs and crawfish boils, he would let me wear his Super Bowl ring (or did they just call it the World Championship ring back then?). Quite a thrill for a young Tiger fan.

When Jimmy Taylor retired he was a Top 10 (Top 5?) all time NFL leading rusher.
Hester was an LSU great, but he barely played as a pro.
They’re not in the same stratosphere.

A few years ago, I was in Dallas restaurant with friends. Roger Stallbach and his wife walked our table. After he was seated he came back to our table and said to me "he had to come back over to the table and get a closer look at me" He thought that I looked like Jimmy Taylor.
