Said Sloan completely dominated Baker last night
I have literally never listened to Hannigriff, and “hot takes” like this from talk radio people are exactly why.
Without the first play of the game, and the last play of the game, where two missed assignments left the middle of the field completely uncovered, the defense did a pretty good job stopping them throughout the night.
Yes, obviously those plays count, but literally two busted plays on a night where they ran 68 plays doesn’t constitute “complete domination” imo.
The second half the defense played lights out, the 3rd quarter especially.
On the three drives in the 3rd Baker’s defense gave up one first down on 11 plays and 27 yards. That is the closest thing to complete domination that happened in that game.
Even in the 4th they continued to hold and keep them out of the end zone, giving up three FG attempts, two that were missed before the game tying drive. The hold when we gifted them the ball at the 13 yard line was inspiring shite and should have been the end of the game but they got put back out there unfortunately and yeah the UK kicker didn’t miss three in a row.
The first half was really weird. They gave up the busted run on the first play and then because our offense was chewing so much clock and the punt return TD UK only had two more drives in the half.
We forced them to punt on one, and the second was the TD at the goal line before the half.
Yeah that drive sucked. It was a 15 play 75 yard beauty where we really couldn’t stop them, only forcing one 3rd down before the goal to go series.
So yeah, he got owned on that one drive for sure. But even then the fricking defense held on that 4th down. It was an incredible stop, but the refs gave them a TD.
Yeah it sucks and it’s an excuse but it certainly doesn’t justify a carnival barker like this dude roasting a DC that did a pretty good job for the vast majority of the night.
The big problem with people like that is he was no doubt reading the scoreboard and feeding off of the emotion of that hell hole when he goes on air post game. And instead of providing some calm and perspective with his platform, he just feeds into the misconceptions on how the game played out live.
I admit I was in the “defense played like shite” camp watching the game.
But a huge part of that was after the busted first play, I kind of lumped the punt return TD in with the defense because the tackling was so atrocious. But even if you forget about the insane penalties that weren’t called and believe the dude didn’t step out of bounds, that play still has nothing to do with Baker.
Those two plays followed up by the long drive to end the half completely colored everyone’s perception of how Baker and the defense performed.
But the full picture is something much different. Yeah he still probably isn’t elite and yes the offense is always going ti have to pull more weight imo,but that’s why Lane is here and I’m fully confident if the defense can play only slightly better throughout the year the offense will be up to carrying that weight.
These blow hard ranters with microphones aren’t any more qualified to make judgments than anyone else on these boards.
He’s a far less qualified or accomplished Finebaum and using his platform to rile up an already overly emotional fanbase when he’s in the exact same state of mind they are is destructive and I would hope he can at least revisit his unhinged rants and enlighten the ones that don’t have the time or desire to go back and evaluate a game.
That should be part of his job right? I don’t know if he has a history of correcting his mistakes or not, maybe someone can follow up here if he does.

Yeah what the hell is that about? You watch tape all week and prepare for a specific team. Seems like you wouldn't be surprised. Are teams totally changing the way they play offense when they play LSU?
I've always thought that the Jimmys and the Joes were the problem instead of the Xs and Os. But when you think about it Baker has had some dudes. Injuries are always going to be a factor but he isn't out there trying to make magic happen with ULM level talent.

Correct!
Baker’s defense has dominated the second halves of both our losses. In each of those, the offense has come up short in the second half.
Today’s game is oriented toward offense, and in particular toward good QB play. When we play a guy like Chambliss we have to outscore him - just as teams playing against Jayden Danials and Joe Burrow had to outscore us. In both of our losses, the defense was stout in the second half and gave our offense multiple opportunities to deliver victory.

If you are a great DC needing one stop to close out a win you get it.
But you can’t name a single great DC. Nick Saban is widely regarded as a great defensive mind. He needed one stop against LSU in 2019 and couldn’t get it, even with repeated chances. I guess Nick and his DC sucked?
A good offense, given repeated chances, is eventually going to deliver. We gave Kentucky repeated chances at the end of that game. We went for the jugular once and our turnover machine fumbled. Our defense bailed us out AGAIN. Then we went conservative and gave them the ball with plenty of time left.

I met some Ole Miss fans yesterday at Jersey Mikes
Very nice folks who appreciated what Lane built there
They were stunned that Lane didn’t go for that 4th and 1

Problem with Baker is that soft zone crap he implemented at the end of the game -stick to being aggressive

You're being very ignorant right now. You can't just take away the negative plays. They are all part of it. You live with big plays outside with your DBs. You don't live with big plays out of the run game. You don't try to get too cute against the worst 3rd down offense in the country and give up an easy run on 3rd and 10. Baker did not call a good game. Did they eventually play better against the run in the 2nd half? Yes but that doesn't change that he got outcoached. C'mon man.

You made a lot of excellent points in this post but I’ll think you’re being a bit hard on Hanagriff. He’s generally one of the most fair and measured “home” analysts that I’ve listened to…Thats not to say he’s always right certainly. I’m sure there was some emotion based on the way the game played out and he may well revisit it just as you did.
Finebaum is a clown and a sideshow act that knows very little about actual football. One of the things I like about the Hanny/Dickson postgame is that they actually talk football.

Learning lesson for Kiffin. Guarantee in the game is on the line he will go for it next time. I really hope he bans baker from calling that stupid defensive i-formation. No other DCs call it.

Appreciate this.
Like I said I’ve never listened to him. I haven’t lived in state in 20 years and never got into the podcast era so I really only know the name based on threads here.
So if I lumped him in with Finebaum types unfairly thats on me

Everything he said was true.

Saban more eloquently used this verbiage 25 years ago. Something like, "mediocre coaches can make adjustments game to game, average coaches can make adjustments at halftime, great coaches can make adjustments after the first two drives."
It’s an old baseball adage. “ Average hitters make adjustments game to game, good hitters make adjustments at-bat to at-bat, and great hitters make adjustments pitch to pitch.”

It really seems like he is trying to force himself to be a conservative coach even though it goes against who he is naturally. Didn’t he say something along the lines of talking himself out of going for it?

I will enlighten you. Hanny is the opposite of a "hot take guy". He is by far the most trusted voice on radio when it comes to logical LSU discussion.

never thought we would play not to lose with Kiffin as coach. We;ve done it twice now and lost twice. There is no excuse to have no one behing the defensive line for the two point play. A 6th grade would not alloed that to happen. Five blocking 4 with a fairly elusive QB runner. Never in my life.... I say bring back Miles to help decision making at the end of the game. It would be a step up and I ain't kidding.

Where Baker is getting roasted is Minchy threw for 25% of his total yds in the last 6 plays of their final drive... That is too soft. And then the complete debacle call on the 2 pt conv.
