Dumb take! The moron that was previous coach fumbled it promising the number. But now everyone is being fn childish. JD is ridiculous for this action, Pickett should say “I didn’t know it was that big of a deal, for betterment of my team and school I’ll wear another number”. Lane was put in no win situation by the previous golfer that stole coaching money from LSU.

The only? There are only 3 of them and only Cannon’s was retired. Burrow was the greatest player in LSU history and his number is not officially retired.

Jayden transferred here and made a pile of money because of it. While we all appreciate what he did, it is still just a jersey number. Id rather a guy playing for the Redskins be upset with LSU than our rising star at corner who is still currently in Baton Rouge.

Colleges generally weigh multiple factors before retiring a number:
Legacy , awards, a player's contributions to championships, records, and overall team history are considered. Maybe even championships won in the NFL or HOF winner. For instance, Joe Burrow not only won the Heisman but also a national championship, best team in CFB history, bolstering his case and his number has not been retired. Program tradition: Some schools reserve jersey retirements for a handful of legends in their history to maintain the honor’s significance .

Balance and fairness: Colleges often avoid retiring numbers immediately so that future players and team dynamics remain flexible
Alternatives to Retiring a Number
Many programs recognize great players without retiring their numbers such as state or local Hall of Fame or Ring of Honor, allowing Numbers and legacies to be honored and celebrated without permanently taking jerseys out of circulation.Special jersey awards: Some schools pass a jersey number to a deserving player each season to honor the original player’s contributions while keeping the number active .
Conclusion
While winning the Heisman Trophy is a prestigious achievement, it is not by itself a definitive criterion for retiring a jersey number at power 5 universities. The decision depends on a combination of a player's overall contributions, school-specific traditions, and the desire to preserve the honor and exclusivity of retired numbers. Programs may instead choose other methods to honor legendary players while keeping options open for future athletes. Major programs need to get out of the business of retiring numbers. This fact became even more evident after the fiasco surrounding former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his slide to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft after his number was retired. No Heisman, no NC and no NFL career.
LSU does not have a history of retiring numbers. It is not in their culture or DNA. LSU has retired only 5 numbers in its' entire history. If Jayden wins 2 or 3 superbowls and passes for 50,000 + yards in his NFL career, maybe then should his number should be the 6th. However, I think Joe will get #6 first. Jayden and LSU will just have to disagree on this subject.

Doesn't LSU have a release or waiver for something like a worldwide, cost free non exclusive license to use LSU JD images created or captured while playing for LSU, similar to what every parent signs when your kid plays any high school ball, or even steps on a campus as an enrollee for that matter?
I'd think the school created/has/retained the legal right to use those LSU images, otherwise, they'd be asking everyone featured with their action shots and film clips for license to include them in a bumper film, pregame or halftime pump up reel. Guess they'll take him off the halftime NFLSU update, or maybe put an "athlete formerly known as..." with an anonymous outline in its place.
One player who I guess won't be coming back around the program, or get a statue. Shame. Sours his brand, imo. As comparisons go, 20 and 9 do have undefeated season nattys, which he does not, and only 20 is retired as a number, no others. 5 and 9 not issued as per unwritten/inside rule. I think without this move, in time, his #5 would have made it on to the upper deck ring with 20, 21, 37 and most recently 4. but not before 9 made it up there. Now I think Pettycopter #5 and his expert agent have scuttled that. I doubt that sour milk will get better with time. I think a true Tiger would want the team to be its best and wouldn't mind a defensive recruit/player using his number given the circumstances of transition and recruiting, especially as he goes into a contract year with the Commanders (@$9.4mm per year). Seems like the timing on this press story isn't well aligned with entering his contract year. LSU brand is about to take off and he's
about his jersey. Anyone scramble to JB #9 to ask him what he thinks? I hope he tells them to issue #9 and go Tigers.

You are completely insane . This is a bad look for Daniels. LSU doesn’t owe this guy anything! He came to LSU and won a Heisman and got picked 2nd in the draft. LSU benefited him. You are really crazy if you believe what you wrote here

The only "number" retired is 20. That was the first LSU Heisman winner. LSU's policies state that all numbers are recirculated. Jersey's are retired not numbers.

This obsession with Jayden by some of the posters on here is weird. He lost 7 games in two years as a starter. Had one big win in two years (against Bama and not even in his Heisman year). Won the Heisman by stat padding against mediocre teams.
He was a great player but it’s an absurd position that he deserves some all time treatment. And whatever special treatment he does deserve it’s absolutely less than Burrow.

Jerseys are retired at LSU, not numbers. The numbers can be, and are re-used. Only number “retired” is 20. Not sure if that is official or what the deal is with that one though.
