Am I the only one that sees Hernandez doing the same thing?
what Bodine and Hernandez do isn’t comparable

Hernandez lets ball carry him then redirects. Bodine is really really good

Dude is legit. Pretty much won the Auburn Super with his bat and his arm.

Solid player. That said I like our catcher just fine.

It’ll be annoying as hell but I have to give him credit. Guy is one of the smoothest catchers I’ve ever seen.

That guy’s twitter is covered with catcher stuff. Looks like he thinks you’re supposed to move your glove two feet when you receive the pitch.

There is a technique for framing that advocates just that. The thought is if you always sweep your mitt, then the umpire is more likely to think your framing point was the place you caught the ball. But it has to be a fluid sweep rather than a jerk. Better umps won't bite on those large sweeps but I am not sure we have any of those in college baseball. Robo-umps will all but kill framing, and I am OK with that.

Maybe so, but one of them has caught the most strikeouts in the nation this year…can’t be too bad.

This would be an interesting stat, but i don't think it would be who you think it is. Arrambide caught most of Eyansons games this year to give Hernandez some rest

not bashing Hernandez, and the announcers make watching Bodine unbearable, but he is really really good.

I'd be curious if he has more passed balls than average.

Maybe his pitchers balls have less than average movement, or it's highly predictable movement.

What I see beside the glove being moved to the center of the plate after catching it is that umpire is not watching the ball.

Those first 2 pitches being called strikes is beyond a joke.

If you watch how he sets up, he keeps his mitt near the ground during the pitch and has to move up to catch the ball, that makes his sweeping motion to the strike zone as part of his natural movement to catch the ball. Sneaky and good technique for what he is doing. Got to respect the move and the work he put in for it, but it does suck to go against him given the track record.

umpires aren’t stupid, they know what the catcher is trying to do.

No. That's framing.

No for the most part they are not but your eyes tend to deceive your brain in many instances. When they see the glove in the k zone time and time again and the decisions have to be made instantaneously they will fall for framing, especially the smooth framing catchers. Umps gonna be real hot behind that plate as well.

At least he catches on one knee like all great catchers in the history of baseball.

This

But what I have noticed more this year is catchers over framing. They’ll pull a strike on the edge and over exaggerate the strike and the ump just doesn’t want to call it.
