Who would you pick? I’ve seen a few great prospects come up just to get bashed. Not a single one is good enough for some of you.

Aranda-Not head coach material/can’t recruit/unproven.

Freeze-too much baggage

Fleck-inexperienced/flash in the pan

O’Brien-mediocre NFL coach

Franklin-not good enough

Who would be a consensus HC pick then?

Pretty simple. Fickell should be number 1. Everybody else is below him.

So was Saban. And we will be saying the same thing about CUM in a few years. From strictly a coaching perspective, these were two of the best in college football.

BOB is my first choice. Took a program from the dead at Penn St and made them respectable. I bet he has learned some new things under Saban too.

He won 54 games in the NFL, took the Texans to the playoffs numerous seasons and won his division many times. I would say that is better than mediocre. A plus is that he coached under Bellichik. Just because he failed once he became a GM, people think he can’t coach.

Half the fan base will be pissed off when the new coach is chosen, then they'll spend the next 3-4 years desperately trying to prove they're right.

Outside of Saban there would not be a "consensus".

Of the potential REALISTIC candidates, I would choose Kiffin.

The LSU job is a big job, with HUGE expectations. Expectations that are very tough to meet considering the conference and division in which LSU plays. So whoever is the next HC better first be able to recruit. But second, I like someone with big time self confidence and a bit of an ego. Confidence that you can kick anyone and everyone's arse. Go look at all great players and coaches over the years. Some were more outspoken than others, but the trait they all shared it they believed they were the best in the world at what they did.

Just look at Joe Burrow at LSU. There were many things that made him great. But maybe the single biggest thing that made him great was his self-confidence. He didn't care who the opponent was. He always thought he was going to kick their arse. As Gary Danielson put it during the Alabama game "He ain't afraid of anyone, anything, anywhere, anytime". When you come into a place with MASSIVE expectations like those at LSU you better be confident in your abilities to be able to rise above the constant pressure and criticism...which is cataclysmic after EVERY loss. Or, in other words, operate with a "who gives a shite about the fans" approach. You can be the biggest jerk in the world and the fans will still love you if you are winning.

Much like Steve Spurrier, I think Kiffin has that. Yes, they got beat by Bama last week, but I don't think Kiffin is intimidated by Saban. He's shown he can orchestrate a good offensive attack. Oxford MS isn't a bad place to live, but Ole Miss is ALWAYS going to be in an uphill fight to consistently compete in the SEC. Even moreso in a few years when Texas and Oklahoma join the fray. There is a cap on how much success you can have at OM and, eventually, even a successful HC there will become a victim of his own success as he increases the expectations of the fans/program.

Fans can sit on their high-horses and say they want a "good guy" who represents the program well....and they'd be lying because they would be calling for that "great guy" to be put out on his arse if he was going 7-5 each season. Fans want a winner, and will tolerate EVERYTHING else as long as he is winning.

Is Kiffin a "slam dunk"? Of course not. But no other HC who LSU might be able to get is either.

This is how things go.

We hate the current HC (rightfully so)

We hate the future HC prospects

We will hate the new HC hire

Rinse and repeat

Seriously though. I’ve been saying this. None of the current prospects are without fault. Everyone wants their guy. Not everyone is going to get their guy. Who cares. I’ll trust the guy talking to these coaches.

For what it’s worth, Napier, Fleck, and Fickell all have a better track record of building programs than most names that are thrown out there.

Freeze could beat Saban, but other than that he was middle of the pack. Franklin won’t leave, but even if he would, he took over a monster program in Penn State, no surprise he’s has moderate success. Can’t seem to cash in, though. I’d be fine with Aranda, put personally prefer someone with expertise on the other side of the ball. I have no idea why people want O’Brien….

PSU was 9-3 the season before BOB took over. Yes, there were sanctions and defections following that season, but BOB went 8-4 and 7-5 in his TWO seasons at PSU in a relatively weak Big 10 at the time. They were able to scrape by a lot of average teams in the league, but really all that good. His PSU tenure just "looks" better because the expectations of the program when he took over where at rock bottom.

Plus, other than Kirby Smart, all these former Saban assistants who purportedly learned so much from him haven't done much of note

Our fanbase will absolutely zone in on all the negative aspects before admitting a positive one. That's just the rant.

What I do know is that Woodward has a history of home run hires and I trust him to make the right one for us.

Maybe LSU can start doing a competent coaching search for a change instead of hiring a candidate that would seem like a troll would do...which is what they did with Orgeron. Hired the worst imaginable candidate to the point you had to think it was an opportunity to troll. Of course LSU fans are going to bitch with the way this admin has dealt with hires in the past.

I will never understand people who say kiffin. He’s only failed at every stop as a HC.

I won't pretend to know who's best but I can dream of what an experienced OC & head coach would do with our talent.
We've not kept the OL talent we've recruited well. Damien Lewis was killing it for the Seahawks last night. We could sure use him and Dare Rosenthal right about now.

He's my pick as well. This is the last guy Saban wants at LSU.

Theres a reason why BOB is a coordinator at this stage of his career.
