I mean if you look at the broad picture, the winning is great but there have been other advancements too, if you start looking at the analysts & the locker rooms & the digital footprint they’ve brought to recruiting, on top of the digital media stuff that will stout & company are doing. Some of this stuff is pioneering & all this is happening under Coach O. People want to bring up Miles, not sure why, but this type of stuff would never happen under him, and didn’t happen under him.

They didn't change, they just had to shut for up a few months.

But does it have to? If those coaches take a team from averaging 9 wins a year to competing for championships and winning a few of them, revenue follows that success. Everybody eats. I don’t think this is a zero-sum game.
It's certainly not zero sum, but I also don't know if the increased revenue makes up for the increased salaries.
Eventually, you won't be able to throw around enough money to poach a top 3 coordinator, which is what I think we'll see this year. This doesn't mean that we can't be successful, it just means that the initial strategy was not viable long term.

I’ve said it before...if he was able to do anything close to what happened this year...there needs to be a movie.

You don't think that is somewhat important?
LSU fans just continue to not understand what a buyout is.
No it’s not important and honestly in the end, they all look the same at big programs. Like in any sport as a coach you’re pretty much getting a guaranteed contract. In college football it just comes with buyout clauses rather than being rock solid guaranteed.
How do you negotiate a university-friendly buyout with a coach that just had the best season in CFB history?
Do you realize LSU has no grounds for that from a negotiation standpoint?

I wasn't even really referencing his opinion per se. Just the goofy 'heads I win, tails you lose' "logic" he thinks makes sense and somehow constitutes a valid point in the discussion.

I believe this says more about who we want to be than anything else: Do we want to be a top 5 program or just a good program? Looking back, would we have done this to keep Saban? Of course we would because we now know the outcome. I believe, and most of the country does now, that Orgeron is a top coach and worth the money. If you believe he can’t be bought away from LSU if they disrespect him, look at all the “Louisiana” players that have left. Other coaches and players are watching this also to see what type of school we are. One team, one heartbeat was an invitation to not only the team but also the administration and the fans. The administration got on board by paying to keep the main architect here. Knowing Orgeron, he is doing his job by working tirelessly to recruit the best players and assistant coaches for next year. Do we as fans get on board and support our team or sit in the background putting them down. I choose to cheer, pay my money to support them, and back the direction our school seems to be heading (the top).

But again, it just isn't anyway to run a business. You reward success, despite if you have been burned in the past.
His previous contract was structured to do just that. He got $1.7MM in bonuses this year on top of his $4MM base IIRC.
I'm of the opinion your next contract should be less of a reward and more a reflection of what we expect based on those past results in the proper context. I have that opinion across sports and the business world.

Well worth it and still getting a good deal imo

Right where I thought It would be.
This is about right for a 1 NC coach.
It’s about where Dabo was after his first.

Higher AAV with lower guarantee? Would mean more money for Ed if he performs and more flexibility for LSU if he doesn't. Obviously neither of us were in the negotiations, so who knows how this was ultimately decided.

what do you think Woodard's expectations are?
Posted on 1/24/20 at 9:46 am to Y.A. Tittle
This offseason it was " Woodys here and O dont have his buddy to protect him anymore!"
(Woodward gives O big raise)
"OMG! What is this shite?"

Very easy. Who is a legitimate threat to try to take Orgeron from LSU? And when I say legitimate, I mean someone who (a) has the financial resources and willingness to throw a huge some of money at O and (b) has the type of program that can allow him to win at the same level as he can at LSU? Very few, if any. And LSU can match any of those if they had to.
Anyone, you, me, a football coach, is only "worth" the max amount someone will pay them. Even with this remarkable season, you NEVER heard Orgeron's name come up as a potential candidate for another school. Thus, if no one else is willing to fully guarantee a contract to O, why should LSU bid against themselves to do so?
Bump his base pay up. Create a big incentive package. But unless the negotiations force you to, leave that buffer to bail on him JUST IN CASE you have to.

Revert.
You mean like those crowing all season about O and LSU being the new big bad mofo on the block in the SEC and O creating a new dynasty now saying oh well obviously we can’t be expected to do this every year. He’s going to need some time before we can compete for championships again.
Reversion indeed

Uh... yeah they do. Where else is he going to go? I’m not saying there isn’t another team out there that would take him. I’m sure there is. But which one would he be willing to go to? Which one would pay him anywhere close to 5 million/year?
No otherSEC team would hire him. I’m sorry if that hurts peoples feelings here but it’s the truth right now. The perception within the SEC is still that he caught lightning in a bottle. It sucks, and I don’t agree with it, but that is still the perception. Of course all of that changes if we make a strong run at the championship next year (and I hope it does).
Let me add that I’m 100% ok with this extension. He deserves it. Even if the wheels fall off (though I don’t believe it will), winning the national championship this year made it worth it.
