hey changed their blocking scheme away from zone blocking to hat on hat.

Takes a hell of a lot of confidence in your scheme and ability to be successful zone blocking in the SEC. These players had 0 confidence and it showed.

Hat on Hat should have been the switch halfway through the UCLA game

A sudden, new revelation. Run old school, basic run game; pulling guard, tackle, etc., leading the way. No zone read without a CEH type RB. Price is a hit the hole type. The OL is coming together, but this is more about scheme.

Big man in yellow pants is pushing other big man in front of him to ground. Little man who runs very fast is running past big man on the ground towards big pole on other side of the field. Little man runs so fast no one catches him.

Opposing teams are giving us the run for the most part, they weren't expecting it.

Lead blocker helps. Davis-Price is a little slow out of the backfield, helping spring him helps.

It also helped that it seems like he's finally finding the hole instead of just running straight into the pile.

The big change in his running style that I noticed in the Florida game is that he has this little hesitation after getting the ball. This does 2 things: it allows time for the blocks to develop and it lets him see where the holes are.

Personally I think O took his hand out of calling plays and let Peetz call his own

Ran basic counter traps, more down hill running vs zone read

TDP is a north south runner. That is not a complaint or criticism. It is his strength. They finally designed the blocking scheme to clean out holes and let him run through. The Zone blocking scheme relys on shifty backs and finessing certain players. We were getting killed because TDP cant run laterally very well and the contain guy was chasing down our runs from behind quite often because he was not buying the fakes or getting whiffed by the RB.

Somewhere Les Miles is mailing a letter to LSU with the ole Toss lead diagramed in the I formation!

Very simple
LSU abandoned the strictly zone blocking fiasco and began running traps , counters, misdirection with pulling linemen and an H back leading thru the hole clearing out the LB plugging the hole . Amazing that out new oline coach took 5 games to figure that out
My wife knew after 2 games, Of course she is a good listener

Realized all we have are guards so we stopped blocking East and west and started blocking north and south!

Since Ed was already on his way out, he probably wasn't mandating the change.

Knowing what we know now that he had been shitcanned before this game, maybe the coaches were allowed to coach instead of him meddling like he did in his Ole Miss days.

I mean, how else can LSU run all over an SEC team but not the defensive juggernauts like McNeese and Central Mich?

A guy that’s great at sports training and making baseball bats figured out a running scheme that our coaches couldn’t.

Do you think most OL coaches, especially ones in their first season at a school, have the authority to take a major part of the offense and throw it out once the season starts? Davis was only here a couple of months before camp started.

The scheme is on the head coach and OC. They should have made the adjustments earlier.

We have a lot of great explanations in this thread but one big reason we ran all over Florida is because their defensive coordinator is Todd Grantham. We're 6-3 vs that guy over the years and he's only had one game where his really stopped us.

yes, O depends on his coordinators. The offensive scheme was designed by Peetz and the oline coach, who probably didn't know anything but zone blocking, and was reluctant to make a change. I think O, who is not an Oline coach, knew enough that it wasn't working, and demanded that Peetz and Oline coach change the play and blocking schemes, and they did and voila...the players did what they were coached. This was all on Peetz and the OLine coach imho.

Dude, go listen to or read any interview before the season where O talks about Jake Peetz and the offense. The JOE BRADY 2019 OFFENSE, as he said repeatedly. Peetz was hired to do one thing- run that playbook. That’s what he’s been doing until O finally decided that what he mandated wasn’t going to work. This is 100% on O for trying to recreate 2019, even if the pieces to do it didn’t fit, and then not admitting that it was a mistake and making these changes earlier.

The scheme we ran in 2019 was based on zone blocking without a lead blocker out of the gun and it worked because we had 3 NFL offensive linemen and a back with shiftiness and great vision. If that same scheme and playbook is what Peetz was brought here by O to run, how in the frick is Brad Davis going to change it until they decide to move away from it?

About that...

What you saw there was a result of changing our offense, or blocking scheme. To run those counters we had to change the offensive base and us a blocking TE and scrap, partially, the zone blocking concepts. The root issue has been all along that the "Brady offense" damn sure needs the pass to set up the run because you will not have numbers in the run game. Peetz wasn't calling the plays to "setup" the run, Max wasn't reading/audibling properly, and our OL was always outnumbered at the point of attack. In addition Max isn't crisp, decisive, and accurate enough to consistently back those LBs off with fear of the passing game behind them. So LBs were always poking the heads in gaps before RB had a chance to hit the LoS.

Now I'm not saying the OL has been great all along, they have not been. But they were playing at a disadvantage in the rush game. By utilizing a better blocking TE and running counters the OL were able to get numbers at the point of attack (that IS the point of a counter) and they did a damn good job of executing it. Just be aware, that is a world of difference from the "Brady offense", or even a true spread offense.

Having said that- considering the limitations of Peetz, Max, and the OL personnel it is a good move. It is CFB, you shouldn't rely on predetermined systems because you will rarely have the personnel at every position. Brady and Burrow aren't walking through that door. You have to adjust. This was a good adjustment.

And I just want to note, we ran 3 plays (maybe 2?) in max protect (not in redzone). One was a sack and the other a near sack with a run for no gain.

How did the coaching staff miss on Martinez? He should’ve been starting for game 1.

He was phenomenal against UF.
