LSU could have bama, Florida, and A&M every year.
it is far more likely (and realistic) that we will end up with the two Mississippi schools and either Arkansas or A&M.

Wait, how is this any different than 4 team pods where you have 3 permanent opp each year?
Pods are the building blocks of divisions, the composition of which would change every year as you rotate the pods. Year 1 would be Pods A&B constituting one division, and Pods C&D constituting the other. Next year would be A&C in one, and B&D in the other.

The problem with pods in the SEC is that there is a grouping of five schools that play four games that must be played every year (Bama-Auburn, Auburn-UGA, UGA-Florida, and UT-Bama). You can't preserve those four games in a conventional four-team pod system, so they would have to bastardize the pod format by also setting up permanent opponents in the other pods for every team, meaning the rotation would take six years rather than four, and you'd have six teams that you would play every year, with 3 rotating (as the pod matchups change). On top of that, you still end up with one of the big weaknesses of divisional play, in that you will have years where one division is much stronger than the other, and the championship game is a mismatch.

The SEC considered 1 permanent and 3 permanents. I wonder why they didn't consider 2 permanents.

They considered an 8 game schedule with 1 permanent opponent (1-7) and a 9 game schedule with 3 permanent opponents (3-6).

Both options are clean because you play exactly 15 teams (either 1 permanent + 14 rotating or 3 permanent + 12 rotating) in a two year period. This means you have a system where the schedule can basically “reset” every other year because you’ve played the entire conference.

Something like 2-7 would make scheduling much more complicated because you would play the entire conference plus 1 repeat game against a rotating opponent every 2 years. So it would take like 15 years for the schedule to “reset” instead of 2.

Gumps get lay-down Vandy and Auburn/Tenn are both 2nd level.
No chance Nicky approves us getting State which would be our Vandy (significantly better than them anyway) without switching 8$4 and Arky.

Take it like a cheerleader, Jimbo.
TU/8$4 is one of the 3 best rivalries in CFB. (bama/Aubie & OSU/Michigan) If they don't play each other every year it's a sham.

I am fine with that alignment. Last 4 SW conference teams allowed into SEC paired together.

Sorry to pick, My Man... Mizzou never was SWC. Doesn't matter though - point is well made.

I would take that pod assignment all day long, though I do agree a divisional approach (two eight-team divisions) is best for the conference as a whole.

Love it. Has to be this way or two geographically defined divisions.

Any division where you didn't have both Texas schools and OU in it made zero sense. Now if they really wanted to frick us over, they could include us and then go Mizzou, Ark, OM, MsSt, but they won't break the older traditions for a geo cut that way.

Blame Bobby Bowden who was too chickenshit to join the SEC in 1991 or so.

That’s the line everyone says when just looking at the situation at that particular point in time. What people fail to realize is Florida State tried to join the SEC many times with support from UF and UGA from the 1960’s onward. They were told “No” too many times prior to that potential opportunity.

It is divisions just not the ones you are used to. NFC South is a division.

I've seen this posted a few times but it's just too weak. Either 1 of the Mississippi schools or Arkansas is probably out and a stronger program goes in their place. I mean it would probably be great for us in the long term, but balance of power just seems way off.

That being said, the pod system will really ruin quite a few rivalries, even if you play different teams more "often". That's the huge drawback to it.

Le sigh, honestly not sure whats next for ruining college football. I really prefer the current divisional setup with an extra SEC game once Texas/OU come in.
