This started when they signed the last contract. We didn't notice it because we didn't play during the day. The championship year the Kentucky game was over 5 hours. You can notice at the end of games they just run the game because they have gotten in their full commercial allotment and then some. They start running local commercials.
It really make for a disjointed game. All the extended stops actually kill momentum. The other games have as many breaks, between plays, etc. However, they don't run as many commercials and the stops don't last as long. They don't do it with the NFL because the games will run into prime time.

Please post this on the SEC Rant!
CBS is out of control. They need to know the SEC both notice, and expect better.

Yep, caught that one... can't stand games on CBS. It's a rarity when I hope something is on ESPN, but its more enjoyable to watch LSU and not listen to Verne jizz when the opposing team does something good.

watching the game yesterday (and living in the UK), but 6 year old who is used to watching soccer and american football, said to me, daddy, why are there so many adverts in american football...I said, son, there just is...CBS is milking it way too much.

I've missed very few games in the past 15 years and haven't missed a bowl game this century.
The poor decisions from the SEC HQ (like all these damn day games and 3.5 - 4 hour CBS games) is what will finally run me out of college football.
I threw in the towel on ESPN a few years ago and have given up all college football except LSU. If I can't go to Tiger Stadium and enjoy a game due to the BS associated with the television contract and SEC greed then I'll give it up completely.
They can make "revenue" excuses but what happens when the games go to 4.5 hours?...5 hours? Where do you draw the line? When is enough...enough?
At one point I went to the bathroom and bought a Coke...and didn't even miss a play. I could've walked to my car and back and still probably only missed 1-2 play. Very sad!
I wish I knew in advance which games would be early starts on CBS. I would just sell my tickets. It's just not worth it anymore.
Thanks SEC HQ for ruining traditions...except for those which benefit your little Gumps.

Watched on TV yesterday..Those of you taking note actually may be underestimating how often they ran commercials yesterday. 3-4 commercials between every change of possession and 3-4 more during every injury....Rerunning tape now...They went to commercial after each kickoff touchback...FYI, about an 1/10th of the commercials are for the SEC and the new SEC network..

How long was the entire telecast? A&M game ended a little before 6:30pm

I was at the UGA game and it felt like it lasted five hours. Fock you CBS.

I could not agree more with the OP. The 2007 Arkansas game was my last as a season ticket holder because of CBS, that game was 4 hours BEFORE OT!!! It got to the point that I cared less about who won as I did about getting out of there. I passed on my tickets to my nephews after that.
ESPN has another game to get on, so their games seem to move much quicker, but CBS has one game and they want to make it last forever. I will go to ESPN night games occasionally, Yesterday was my first CBS game since 2007, I only went to take my 2 grandchildren to their first game, never again.
Besides that, some idiot in security let a dog in to sit behind us, a huge distraction for the kids. Apparently some marshall got a $20 handshake,

CBS can get away with this because there is no programming behind the game. NFL games start at noon, then 3:25. CBS follows that every week, so it's not like they don't know how to get these games down to 3 hours.
For halftime, they are 20 minutes long, but since the networks like to interview the coaches, the clock won't start until that interview is done. It wouldn't be fair to keep Miles in an interview with CBS for 5 minutes into halftime.

However, when CBS televises a game, it is just fricking brutal. It seems often there is no rhyme or reason for the long delays and TV timeouts.
Only game i went to this year, and i couldnt agree more. Its tough to get/keep a momentum going with the constant extended commercial breaks.

Their needs to be a ticket holder bill of rights! TV has ruined the in-stadium fan experience to a large degree, thus explaining many of the empty seats and early departures.

The thing that frustrates me is that they made all of the rule changes a few years ago to try and "speed up the games" when anyone with half a brain knows the real reason that these games take so long is the broadcast. With both teams style of play, that should easily have been less than a 3 hour game.

Maybe, but I would much rather have the game on TV rather than not.
Ticket prices, traffic and parking have also contributed to decrease in fan interest.

I would love to see a breakdown of time of commercials vs time of game played for CBS games.
OP nailed it, CBS IS SUCKING THE LIFE OUT OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

Long post, OP. Bottom line: Football is an afterthought to the CBS marketing machine....
