Yeah. Get your hearing checked.

Sorry that I am not riveted to whatever Matt says.

From ALL the former athletes that I HAVE heard / seen on the Interweb, some have an issue and some couldn't care less.
Put them on a "ring of honor," but, IMO, the jersey/number retiring is dumb.

ALSO, be careful who you put on a pedestal. I'm sure NO ONE thought OJ would ever be a murderer.
That's one of the main reasons I am against this sort of thing.
Their legacies are not done.

Why doesn’t JD just give the kid a million in NIL money not to wear it. Money talks , bullshite walks.

If you retired every number for players who won national awards you would have 5 players wearing the same number or some shite! So frick what Jayden Daniels is talking about!

LOL.. National Awards?? so the Heisman is now some random "National Award" ? there are 90 Heisman winners ever in over a million eligible athletes since its inception.. LSU has exactly 3 of them.. The 1st LSU Heisman winners number is retired, The 2nd LSU Heisman winner is on record as saying he was told by LSU the number would not be issued... The 3rd Heisman winner.. do you think he was told the same thing as the 2nd? or is he just mad for no reason ??.. ... Now should have JD5 handled this 100% behind closed doors yes.. should have DJ continued to wear 3 yes... they are both to blame... It definitely appears LSU made 2 different "promises" and chose to honor the one to the Soph so he would not transfer

Burrow’s number is pretty exclusively a quarterback number.

Early Doucet and Ego Ferguson disagree.

So does Jack Hunt.

I will bet that at some point in the future #9 will be worn by a player at LSU. But probably not at QB. Again different situation. If DJ had said he wanted #9 then I believe he would have gotten #9. The program is what's important and it's bigger than any player's stupid number. And as the HC you should operate that way.

So why not just tell recruits and current players this exact thing and assign them whatever number LSU wants ? what would be the issue with that ?

You do understand that Pickett is one of the highest DB recruits LSU has ever signed, and he was a freshman All American? He could easily be the next superstar corner from here.

Well, if you are competing with Oregon, Miami, UGA etc to sign him, telling him "you will take what we tell you to" might be enough for him to sign with someone else.

Neither Jayden Daniels nor Joe Burrow will help you win games in the next couple years, as they're in the NFL now. But having an elite shutdown corner would, that's what they hoped Pickett would become, and btw he's on track to do that.

Now, if they ask for #20, that's the one number officially retired. You can legit say "we don't issue that number here", and you have some justification.

Stop. That’s apples and oranges. Joey B was the greatest QB in LSU history—a Heisman Trophy winner who led us to a 15–0 National Championship. His No. 9 shouldn’t just be retired; it should be under glass with 24/7 armed security like the Mona Lisa in the Louvre

Hate what he’s doing but if Jayden would have had any kind of defense that year there would have been a good chance that team could have gone all the way.

His name is Daniels , not Danielson . Burrow played every game undefeated , punished a great Alabama team , went 15-0 and set records and won the Natty and the Heisman .
Daniels was a great player . Burrow is a generational talent at QB .

Just think, the punter at Florida is wearing Tebows number and no whining has occurred.

JD is in a mission to destroy his legacy in the eyes of LSU fans.

I would wager that it was Brian Kelly who made this promise to Daniels! And we know it was Kelly's staff that made the promise to Pickett. So IMHO Lane has no duty to uphold a promise to a player he didn't coach & has no ties to. What Lane does have is a responsibility to try and retain a player like Pickett from hitting the portal & keep him on the roster to help his team win now. So give him the #5 I'm completely fine with it. Regardless of how Daniels feels about it the #5 isn't retired by the school, as of yet. And he comes off as a entitled self indulgent player doing this publicly. Moving forward there does need to be established guidelines about numbers being retired & what is required for such. To me, even though he won the Heisman, I believe that a player would need to come here from highschool and play his entire career here in addition to his play on the field to have your number retired. Yes that means I wouldn't retire Burrows #9 either. You only have 99 numbers to give out. And even though I think Burrow is worthy if you do his, you have to do Daniels too. But I don't think mercenaries who come in get paid and ball out for 1 or 2 years should have a jersey retired. I say that because it's a slippery slope and you end up with entitled players demanding this shite! But it is what it is & that's why the decision makers are paid so damn well....To make decions about shite like this! And that ain't me!

Why retire numbers in college anyway? You're talking at best maybe two or three stellar seasons, sometimes just one. If your number is retired in the NFL it's for a career of excellence.
