In terms of honors, knowing the university will never allow another player to wear your number is greater than simply having your jersey hanging on the stadium
Both are prestigious as hell, but I think there is a distinction that most would agree is there
I think lsu has it perfect currently, no other football player is close to cannon on terms of what he accomplished at LSU. He truly stands alone
Cannon is Casanova and burrow accomplishments merged into a single players career. Think about that
ETA: and then his track accomplishments. It’s truly just a unicorn. I don’t think the younger generations which includes me can even wrap their head around exactly what Billy Cannon was at LSU. There will never be another

Bert Jones jersey to be retired
The greatest quarterback of all-time
Belichick adored him, he was highly-regarded by the scouts and players of his generation
In 1990, Jones participated in the first NFL Quarterback Challenge, finishing first in the retiree category and third in the regular competition
and he's LSU's FOREVER

Bert Jones 100% deserves this
I think there is room for debate.
Unlike Cannon, Cassanova, Stovall, and Alexander, Jones' great play was really limited to just one season. He was a platoon QB for two years before becoming the starter in 1972. He had a great year in 1972...All American, 4th in the Heisman voting. But is one really good season worthy of a jersey retirement?
Of course, that leads into the same debate about Burrow and Daniels. But unlike Jones, each won the Heisman Trophy. Each were the SEC Offensive POY. Burrow won the national championship. Plus, you could argue their other seasons as LSU's QB were better than Jones's two other seasons outside of 1972 (even within the context in how the game was played in the early 70's vs. modern day football)
I'm not necessarily arguing against Jones. But if being a 1x All American is a big criteria for getting your jersey retired, then LSU has a LOT of jerseys to retire. I'm just off the opinion that having a jersey retired should be rare and for the truly exceptional. The Heisman Trophy is one of those (Cannon, Burrow, Daniels). Being a multi-time All American is maybe in that group too (if combined with other achievements) (Cassanova and Alexander). This just feels like LSU retiring a jersey simply for the sake of retiring a jersey. Even though Jones was a really good player.

You aren’t wrong. By letting in Jones based solely on what he did at LSU, you have about 30 plus equal players waiting now….
Daniels
Burrow
Nabers
Chase
Jefferson
Peterson
TM7
Claiborne
Dorsey
Faulk
Fournette
Those are jsut top of the head thinking recent guys
shite then
Jimmy Taylor
Tinsley
Webster
White
Stingley
Delpit
I mean it just goes on the guys that have likely more of a claim than jones

Yep.
And even if you add in Jones's NFL career in the evaluation (which was really good for first part until injuries started piling up) guys like Taylor, Tittle, and Van Buren are in the pro football HOF...and don't have their jersey's retired (probably because they are now all deceased)
It kind of feels like LSU is just trying to fill up the ring for the sake of doing so

Bert Jones seems forced here
I think most people would laugh if I said Grant delpit deserves his jersey retired
But
Delpit
Jim Thorpe award
2x all sec
2x all American
Jones
1x all sec
1x all American
Hell mo Claiborne
2x all sec
Jim Thorpe award
1x all American
I mean are all these guys going to get their jersey retired?

What would Jones have done in da Joe Brady offense?

Ryan Clark somewhere is starting a debate about it somehow being racist

LSU is woefully behind in this process, but to be eligible they have to exceed all criteria used for LSU HoF selection. One of the main defining criteria for LSU HoF selection is the player has to have graduated, which may disqualify a number of the more recent players.
Jones may be a little weak by some standards, but he was the first LSU QB to be named first-team all American, and he was the one time record holder for passing yards and TDs. Finishing fourth in the Heisman voting is nothing to scoff at either.

Why are they doing this now? This should have been done years ago. He’s arguably a top 3 QB in the program’s history.

Upon further reflection, I recant and say this is very deserving
#7 was a good one

As crazy as it sounds, Jefferson isn't eligible anyway as he didn't win any awards and was only Second Team All SEC one time.
I don't know that a player has to be in the LSU HoF to have their jersey retired, but it seems unlikely that they wouldn't be elected to the HoF first. But graduation is required for election to the HoF and I don't think that Nabers, Chase, Jefferson, Matthieu and Fournette have ever finished their degrees.
ETA: Apparently election to the HoF isn't required as Ben McDonald and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf are not in the LSU HoF.

So you are saying that because of NIL and transfer, no matter what the player done more retired jerseys

I jsut don’t think burrow is near the class of Billy cannon in terms of his LSU career

I'm surprised anyone questions this move. He was LSU's first All American quarterback and until 2019, he was the best QB in LSU history. (and Coach McClendon did him NO favors!)
He is an LSU legend and was on a borderline NFL hall of fame track before injuries ended his career.
LSU waited too long to put Charlie and now Jones in, but it's the right thing to do and now they'll have to decide when to put Kevin Faulk in before the tough decisions for those who played after him.

Glen Dorsey’s #72 needs to be in the conversation.

Only conversation to be had is why it hasn’t happened already.
Most decorated defensive lineman, if not defensive player overall, in school history. 2x All American, unanimous in 2007. SEC Defensive player of the year. Won the Lott, Nagurski, Outland and Lombardi awards.
