Jersey retirement is not the same as number retirement.

Bert Jones 100% deserves this but LSU without a #7 on the field is wrong.

Unless I'm misunderstanding LSUs system, aren't 4, 20, 21, and 37 all fully retired?

maybe he won't be so bitter to LSU now
it was pretty ridiculous he was part of a platoon system though

The No. 7 worn by Jones will join the Billy Cannon’s No. 20, Tommy Casanova’s No. 37, Jerry Stovall’s No. 21 and Charles Alexander’s No. 4 as retired jerseys in the LSU football program.
All retired jersey numbers are displayed on the façade in the south end zone of Tiger Stadium. All but Cannon’s No. 20 are still worn by current players. Cannon has the only retired number in LSU football history.

I thought the same, but Cannon’s 20 is the only number that can’t be worn.

No one has worn 5 or 9 since the Joe and Jayden seasons, but obviously not retired.

Billy Cannon will still remain the only player to have the Number retired.

Burrow should be the number 2. I don't want to see anyone wear that number 9 again.

Agreed.

Heisman and National Champion in same year is # retired. It's not like we'll run out of numbers with that criteria. I would say if you win the Heisman and Title it works, but a player could technically be a non-contributor on a title team then win the Heisman 3 years later. That is different.

Billy did it in different years, but he was a major contributor on the title team. Hard to define that going forward.

They should call it something besides retiring the jersey, but well deserved nonetheless.

Burrow only playing here for 2 years while he spent another 2 at Ohio state makes it a little more murky for his number to be retired like cannons

There are certain numbers you just can't do that with. And where the program was in 2019 was much different. That long drought since 1/9/12 of losing to Bama and constantly having offenses sputter at the end of the season. There was just so much surrounding circumstances with Burrow that went beyond football that it will likely never happen again.

Has to be a case by case basis but I would argue there won't be a season or player like Joe Burrow's 2019 season.

All sins were washed away in 2019. He's a Tiger legend forever and I don't give a shite he transferred from OSU. He improved a ton from 2018 to 2019 while in a Tiger uniform, we watched him grow.

Cam Newton played just one year at Auburn and everyone just considers him an Auburn guy.

He can have his jersey retired which makes him a legend

Having your number retired completely is far different

Burrow and Daniels will likely get statues outside the stadium one day
