There are certain numbers you just can't do that with. And where the program was in 2019 was much different. That long drought since 1/9/12 of losing to Bama and constantly having offenses sputter at the end of the season. There was just so much surrounding circumstances with Burrow that went beyond football that it will likely never happen again.
Has to be a case by case basis but I would argue there won't be a season or player like Joe Burrow's 2019 season.
It's happened 18 times in history. I don't think with that criteria we'd be at risk for losing a bunch of numbers. 3 of the modern ones were products of Saban's dynasty. If we're being realistic, the odds of it happening again at LSU in our lifetimes is quite low.
2025: Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana
2020: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
2019: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
2015: Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama
2013: Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State
2010: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
2009: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
2004: Matt Leinart, QB, USC
1997: Charles Woodson, CB, Michigan
1996: Danny Wuerffel, QB, Florida
1993: Charlie Ward, QB, Florida State
1976: Tony Dorsett, RB, Pittsburgh
1949: Leon Hart, Right End, Notre Dame
1947: John Lujack, QB, Notre Dame
1945: Felix 'Doc' Blanchard, FB, Army
1943: Angelo Bertelli, QB, Notre Dame
1940: Bruce Smith, RB, Minnesota
1938: Davey O'Brien, QB, Texas Christian

All retired jersey numbers are displayed on the façade in the south end zone of Tiger Stadium.
so sometime deep in the future, the facade will show
7 - Bert Jones
7 - Patrick Peterson
7 - Tyrann Mathieu
7 - Leonard Fournette
7 - Jonathan Giles

Billy Cannon will still remain the only player to have the Number retired.
Burrow should be the number 2.
It’s semantics. LSU doesn’t retire numbers anymore
Burrow will have his jersey retired & it is up to the coach’s discretion if it can be worn again

Burrow and Daniels will likely get statues outside the stadium one day
Statues are awesome, maybe I'm in the minority on that one, but honoring our "heroes" with statues is a practice as old as humanity. Romans and Greeks did it.
My thought is:
Heisman = Statue and jersey retired
Heisman + National Title in same year = Also get number retired
I think there are several other jerseys that need to be retired as well - Faulk, Dorsey, etc.

Cannon
Heisman winner
National champion
3x All SEC
2x unanimous all American
2x SEC player of the year
That’s the bar for number retirement . And we don’t have anyone else close to that. And that’s ok, it should be an extremely hard bar to reach

About time.
He was the best LSU quarterback I ever saw before Burrow and Daniels came along.

Having your number retired completely is far different
There is no distinction between the two. As of 2007, LSU will only retire jerseys & up to the coach if the number will still be worn.
The official rule from LSU:
quote:
Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.

There clearly is a distinction between the two it’s even in your description

And the only player on that list other than Burrow who is worthy IMO is Cam Newton at Auburn.

Are you dumb?
The names listed were retired before the rule started in 2007
Pettit (announced 1959)
Cannon (announced 1959)
Maravich (announced 1970)
Shaq (announced 2000)
Bertman (announced 2001)

So there clearly is a difference between a Jersey retirement and a number retirement
Posted on 7/15/26 at 10:57 am to lsupride87
The only distinction is the year it was announced by LSU
Posted on 7/15/26 at 11:01 am to JimTiger72
No Jim
#20, worn by cannon, is a retired number
No other number is retired. LSU at any time if they want to can retire a number instead of just a jersey
That statement you posted simply is clarifying the difference between a jersey retirement and a number retirement

You’re simply wrong bud, but there’s no convincing you
Posted on 7/15/26 at 11:04 am to JimTiger72
If LSU wants to they can permanently retire any number they so choose. Are you arguing differently?

Per their own rules since 2007, they cannot.
They retire a jersey & it is up to the current coach if that number can not be worn.

Per the rules they created
It’s not a law Jim. If they see fit they will simply add a provision for another player for their number to never be worn again
The entire conversation is some think burrow should be added to that.

Whatever you have to say to convince yourself you’re not wrong

There is not much difference between Jersey and number. Obviously they want to retire the number but cannot because there have been several greats wear that number and they want it to be worn in the future.
To thread the needle they are calling it a “Jersey retirement’.
