Curious to see how Dugas does at 2nd in the next couple weeks. I'm pretty sure in Jay opening PC he said Dugas would sit out the first weekend and do defensive drills and cage work and he should be ready for live AB the 2nd weekend of scrimmages.

Overall this position is the weakest of the team. However, the options will be plenty and someone will end up stepping up to take a major role. Just have to figure out who it is. IF not I can see it as a platoon position depending on matchups and who has the hot bat throughout the season.

Dugas hasn't been talked about enough in my opinion. I'm really curious how long his vision has been an issue and what affect it has had on his hitting and for how long?

Merrifield seems to be playing with a lot more confidence right now. He might have been a little intimated last year.

On the Folse podcast it was mentioned that Nippolt gets praised a lot from the other players as a player that can do it all. Seems to be a high floor player.

I would be cautious about pushing Guidry before he is ready. He mentioned the pitching in the fall was an eye opener and I could see it from the stands. Once he becomes confident in his ability to handle this level, he will take off. Hopefully that happens this year but I think it is important to put him in situations where he will be successful early and let his confidence grow instead of throwing him in the fire.

Merrifield gets the job and holds on to it. Steady defense and solid contact at the plate will previal. He needed last year to adjust from JUCO to SEC.

Jay Johnson earlier this week:

“There's not going to be a starter at second base,” Johnson said. “They all have to help us win and are going to have opportunities in different ways.”

Nippolt is interesting, first team All Atlantic 10 last season. Walks more than he K’s. And hits left handed. There will be a lot of days Jay will look for that 3rd LH to balance his lineup, whether it be thru Jobert, Neal, or someone like Nippolt.

I don’t know where to put Gavin Dugas anymore? 2B? LF? He’s been sidelined for so long intermittently that he’s starting to fall behind others simply because he cannot get reps. His power is certainly a tool you try and do anything to get into the lineup but at this point I’m worried at how well he’s able to see the ball. This one’s a wait and see…

I hate this for Dugas because last year he got banged up and missed some time and then decided to come back and is injured again. If healthy I think he would have been the second base started until Guidry was able to get more playing time and then it would have been almost an equal playing time deal. Disappointing cause with how loaded the roster is idk where he slides to now.

Yeah, I think there will be a ton of rotation and 2nd based on matchups at least up until SEC play, and possibly throughout the entire year.

I think that’s likely to be the case for 2B, RF/LF, C and DH. There are a number of players capable of playing each of those positions who each bring something a little different to the table. I think Johnson will switch things around frequently based on matchups (LH vs RH, defense vs offense, power vs average vs speed, experience vs development opportunities, etc.) Pearson will likely be out there most days and Skenes will DH 2-3 times a week, but otherwise I don’t think there will be A starter in those positions.

Of those, I think one of the corner outfield spots will lock down. Maybe by the end of march. We know C will rotate, and if everyone is healthy I think that’s a good thing. Personally, it would make me feel better to have a lock down 2B at some point, but Jay knows what he’s working with and what he’s doing.

some feel that Jay will do all he can to keep many players engaged throughout the entirety of the year. this can be great for morale and competition. the only downside is that you are splitting reps. jay may shorten his bench in June, but to lock in on nine in February is exclusionary. We may have a team whose strength lies in jay having at his disposal an abundance of pieces.

Everyones favorite beat writer Leah Vann put on twitter that Dugas has been cleared by the dr and will be participating in scrimmages this weekend. He will be in the mix at 2B, LF, and DH.

Can back up 3B and 1B also. Good player to have as a utility type guy.

I generally agree with that. I do think Pearson will be mostly locked in. I think the question is whether that will be LF or RF and whether he might move around a bit depending on who the other corner OF is.

I agree Merrifield will likely start opening day. I remember seeing his numbers from the box scores last fall and it was impressive. I think he could turn out to be a reliable option at 2B and a valuable hitter in the lineup.

Ready to get Dugas up to speed. He's the gel guy you need in that bunch. I'd probably still play the other 3 some, but Dugas is the best mix of power and obp and leadership even if he's the bottom of the defense. I think Dugas will surprise some people on defense, though. He came in as an infielder.

Dugas story is crazy

2019 - breaks wrist
2020 - Covid
2021 - ALL SEC
2022 - wrist injury

Really hope this is what we get from him this season to finish off his career. I hope he does well enough that Jay can't tinker with 2B.
