I think Mathieu (albeit truncated) made that level leap. Shame he couldn't see it though.

He certainly got better in his 2nd year, but he was already the best/2nd best defensive player on the team as a true freshman.

His sophomore season was sensational, but his freshman season was really really good.

He was never "just another guy" who morphed into the honey badger. He was that guy from the very first time he stepped on the field for LSU.

Being a young guy that doesn't get a lot of reps because of older guys in front of you and then shining when it is your chance isn't the same thing as playing a lot at a bad or mediocre level and then improving dramatically.

Damone Clark fits the latter. So does Daniels and somewhat Burrow.

Most of the picks in this thread don't fit.

Fournette made a big leap from freshman to sophomore year. But people might not think of him because he was always expected to be great.

Clark is a strange one to mention and very obviously not utlilized in his sophmore year. Went from an extremely promising freshman, to a sophmore that looked completely lost, then to an all american his junior year.

While Brockers was greatly improved,we had expectations of him being really good. But on the same DL that year Bennie Logan came out of nowhere. Going into the year our d tackles appeared to be a weakness and turned out to be a strength.

Patrick Queen made a massive jump. On the same team Lloyd Cushenberry made a huge jump too.

For sure.

Meh. Nothing of note Freshman year, solid second year, and great Junior year. Wouldn't really say it was dramatic.

Burrow made a bigger jump than Daniels. But the question was besides them.

I'd have to say Daniels only bc the improvement happened within the same system. Burrow had a completely new offense his 2nd year.

I think the offense held Burrow back some his 1st year. Daniels looked like a different player within the same offense.

I don't know about drastically but it was always shocking to me that Danny McCray lasted as long as he did in the league.

His play on Special Teams is what kept him in the league so long.
