A 2003 "championship" claim is definitely sus, I agree.

Mark McGwire, Randy Johnson, Fred Lynn, Tom Seaver, Mark Prior...
USC was probably the first school to take college baseball seriously. Cant knock them for that.

True. But they’ve at least won this century. And it’s not like they aren’t relevant. They still contend for titles. They’ve made it to Omaha 3 of the last 5 years. USC doesn’t even make the tourney.

From what I understand they were all mostly in the 70s when 90% of colleges didn’t have the resources for college baseball so USC didn’t have much competition. I’m not sure if the rest of the country caught up or if USC stopped giving a shite but they haven’t made it to Omaha since 2001

12 — SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (1948, 1958, 1961, 1963, 1968, 1970-74, 1978, 1998)

They are the original blue blood of college baseball pre-1980. Since then, LSU has emerged as the preeminent baseball program, and without a doubt since the 1991 Title, in terms of attendance, championships, and facilities, it really is Purple Reign!!!

In 50 years people will ask the same question about all of our 90’s championships. Are they legit? Yes damn right they are. So are USC’s 12 baseball national titles legit? Yes any national title is legit.

I mean, this same argument could be used against our championships from the 90s.

It's threads like this that make people think that LSU fans are *fill in derogatory adjective here*

They were won on the field according to the rules in place, and their coach was a Louisiana guy, but that was before anyone else took college baseball seriously. I am not going to say they weren't legit. They were won fair and square.

Don't think they ever played a 3 game series for the win.
Pretty sure all theirs were a 1 game winner take all.
The 1 game championship only started in 1988 and was that way until 2003. Before 1988, the CWS was a true double elimination format but TV didn't like the fact that there was no way to know when the championship game would actually be.

Sure, if the discussion was current relevancy rather than past title legitimacy, Texas beats USC hands down, but that’s not the discussion.
And besides LSU has only won two this century.

I’m an LSU fan and I’m having a hard time figuring out why anyone would think USC’s titles aren’t legit. They won them under conditions in place at the time.
I know the world wasn’t around before 1990 for a lot of people on these boards, but some of you people can’t help but reveal your stupidity.

Agree. It’s a dumb discussion. They won. Period. According to the rules of the time.
We also won some with the 1 game format. Are those not valid now?
If the CWS goes to a best of 5 does that diminish our accomplishments? No
They have 12 or whatever. They have more.

Almost all of them are pre 1980.
Short answer is a resounding NO.
I believe the argument of greatest baseball program is between Texas and LSU.
I cannot think of more shoddy logic or a more arbitrary number year than 1980. There are some year benchmarks where things changed to some small degree but 1980 is not one of them.

Exactly. We might as well be Florida fans and say they should be recognized as “co-champions” because they scored more runs. ????????

Yale & Princeton both have more football titles than Alabama

Just gives LSU baseball a measuring stick to eclipse in the next couple of decades ;)
