I don't understand this line of reasoning. What is the "potential" that he is exceeding? He is a 5th year senior QB with more starting experience than most QBs in college football. He should be a strength and a weapon for defenses to have to respect given his experience, age, etc.

The bar is so low for expectations of QBs at LSU that by simply completing the forward pass, Etling is exceeding his potential.

I want him to do well. He's our QB and I don't think the freshmen are going to be ready this year anyway. My only criticism of him last year was in situations where he needed to make decisions quickly. Even during the Alabama game, there were moments when offensive line gave him time (yes it happened) and he couldn't get rid of the ball. Maybe the distraction of his back injury had something to do with that, I don't know. It's also possible that a better QB coach will help him this year too.

Depends when you are asking?
If you had asked this question 3 weeks ago in here, most were not fans of his. Many people went so far as to say he was terrible. Many others then would bring up Brandon Harris and say that the coaches didnt utilize his skills, he couldve been great.

Today almost everyone in here likes Etling.

The liking part will stay until LSU loses or he has a bad game and then run a new poll.
Very few in here understand personnel, they just want to bitch at something or somebody.

There are 2 things you can bet on in life.
In an interview ask someone how their customer service skills are and expect the answer to be excellent.
When asking any man, that has a team or watches at least one game a month, how well does he understands the game of football and he will reply ALOT.....

He's one of my favorite players. Not because he is so damn good but rather because he has heart and is always giving everything he has to the team. He does this knowing he has no future in the NFL. He just loves playing the game.

DE is good enough to take us to a 10 win season.

Etling is good enough to take us to a 15 win season. Worse QBs have won national championships. Hell, if not for a shanked field goal by Oklahoma State Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee were good enough to take LSU to an undefeated National Championship, and Etling is waaaayyy better than either of them.

He lives up to and exceeds his potential by having a presence in the pocket, going through progressions, looking off safeties, throwing the ball to the correct WR, by not throwing the ball when nothing is there.

These are all things that our QBs did not do before Danny stepped onto the field. These are things that many college QBs don't do.

Hell jimbo had Jamarcus Russell only read half the field because he knew that's all he could handle. Like it's been said before, Danny doesn't have a third of the physical ability of Russell or many other former LSU QBs but he gets more out of what he has to work with from a physical standpoint than most that we've had before.

If you can't see the difference in our offense between DE and BH under center, then you're blind. The guy gives his teammates a chance to make plays.

You don't even have to narrow it to LSU, Jacob Eason looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane. He has the physical makeup of a number one overall draft pick but he doesn't have whatever "it" is that makes a QB competent. Danny may not have a lot of things, but I think he possesses that "it" factor that can't be seen or touched that allows an offense to work.

I think there are very few that really don't like Etling. All I see is people concerned with obvious flaws, flaws which can be fixed. There is nothing wrong with his arm, it's his mechanics, and release time that he has an issue with. But like I've said before this has to do with the entire team, anyone going out for the pass and the OL at times.

Every play isn't going to be perfect from the OL so the QB and WRs must adjust. They must fight to do their jobs in pressure situations. Need to work on their timing, especially when the blitz is brought. I think the scheme this week had a lot to do with these issues though. You saw last week that we can throw different patterns than the long ball, they simply worked on the long ball this week IMO and did great in both areas.

This week against Miss State they will mix the two into a real game plan while adding other wrinkles to it. I can't wait to see how this week is game planned bc we know we will see State try to stop the run. They may try with only 4 and if they do that the OL must hold up, if the OL struggles against 4 it will be a long day. Overall we'll be fine with Etling, he's a good QB. Not going to beat you on his own but at LSU he doesn't have to do that. GT

In both the Auburn And Florida games, Danny led our team down the field and put us in position to win the game. Elements out of his control caused us to lose both of those games.

Why does a guy get credit for almost leading a team to a last second win on the final drive when it was his play that directly influenced needing that last drive to win in the first place? How is that a logical thought process? Our D didn't allow a single touchdown and we lost the game. Before the last drive of the game against Auburn he had 77 total passing yards.

It's possible to like the kid but also make a rational, objective judgement that he isn't very talented. The two are not mutually exclusive. There aren't LSU fans out there that want him to fail so they can be proven correct on an anonymous internet message board. Everyone in purple and gold wants him to do well. That just doesn't always happen
