re: LSU Softball Commitment List/Recruiting Info
quote:

Goff was always a surprise for me. She definitely didn’t fit the mold of Beth’s pitchers. Best of luck to her. Hard to blame girls for this, without much hope for anything beyond college. Get the playing time and enjoy.

We didn't recruit her to pitch necessarily. Beth will work with kids who pitched in HS to see where it goes or if they have potential. We needed Goff originally last year after we lost Hoover and Walljasper. There was so much youth and inexperience that it was all hands on deck as there were a lot of kids struggling. Since everyone progressed this offseason (Wickersham, Kilponen, Sunseri. and Gorsuch), she wasn't needed in the circle this season.

With the new rules, she will have 2 years left to play though should she transfer. Obviously Purdue is a place to look at given her family history with that school or she may transfer to a local school in Louisiana. A lot of programs locally would love to have her.

If y'all want we can discuss upcoming season depth charge and position battles. While I expect the lineups to be very similar. I think there are a few freshmen that will be playing a lot. In the case we have someone struggling (like Stewart this year), we now have a lot more options to work with. I think the most challenging thing will be how Torina handles playing time and keeping that top freshmen class happy. Of course every other top program will be in the same position we are trying to keep their young talent from hitting the portal.

Btw, we may be adding on to the 2022 class soon enough once contact is allowed for those recruits this coming. fall. I have mentioned the Cammenzind sisters are highly sought after duo for that class. 2022 could end up with 3 or 4 top 10 players potentially. I apologize if recruiting news on here is slow. Obviously since the new recruiting rules went into place, recruiting up until 2022 class will be slower since most programs fill out their classes 3-4 years in advance. Now moving forward, everything will be happening 1-2 years up until they sign which will be good for everyone.

re: LSU Softball Commitment List/Recruiting Info
LSU should have a really strong team next year (Like most top programs).

PITCHING:
In the circle, I think you see the Fab Four from this year (Wickersham, Gorsuch, Sunseri, Kilponen), and I think incoming freshman Morgan Smith will get some innings. Wish we had a full season to see the pitchers, but IMO Wickersham was becoming an All American pitcher. She looked on point to start the year. My question for the team coming into the year was elite pitching. Like when it got to Super Regional weekend, who was gonna be the player to lead us. Wickersham was on point this season, and hopefully she’s even better next year. Gorsuch looked good also this year. Her control was much better. I think Kilponen made major strides. And with everyone coming back and adding incoming freshmen, I think her in a closer role may be her set spot. Because her freshman year she struggled mightily with her control. This year she was really able to get it together and come into big situations for the team and deliver. And if Wickersham develops into our number 1, she goes 6 innings and Kilponen come in for the 7th, that’s a totally different look for opponents. Sunseri struggled both in the circle and with the bat this year. I think she may have been pressing. In the circle, she didn’t have her best stuff, but she was still able to pick up the win over UL. I think she will not have to be looked to as the ace of the staff anymore, which was asking a lot of her. Morgan Smith is the incoming freshman, I don’t know much about her pitching style, so pls inform me, but I think she’ll get some midweek innings. I think the staff will round into roles.
Friday Starter: Wickersham
Saturday Starter: Sunseri
Sunday Starter: Gorsuch
Midweek Starter: Smith
Closer/ Relief: Kilponen

I think those 5 will be the main focus. I think Abrams and Edwards just become depth at the end of the bench. It’s gonna be hard for Torina to find time with them. Incoming freshman Roos is an interesting piece since she’s a left hander. Interesting how Beth uses her. Casanova was gonna be a project from day 1 anyways so I don’t really know how Beth will handle her.

Lots of potential with this group. Excited to see them grow

CATCHING:

This position for LSU is pretty good. Cummins was the surprise of last year for me.Loved the power and loved the swagger. Incoming freshman Hayden Brown is supposed to be a star. If you know more about her please leave us some info on her. And lastly Calland. A very athletic catcher. She did well in the time she was given, but Cummins bat just had to be in the lineup. Interesting to see how Torina uses her. Because Calland has two very good catchers ahead of her. Interesting to see if she stays or transfers out to find more play time. I think if she stays she’ll sheer spot starts during midweek games. I can also see her pinch running for Cummins (the second pinch running opportunity) and then stay in to catch a few innings and when that spot comes up in the lineup to hit, Brown comes in hits and finishes the game. With a larger roster, I think pinch running and pinch hitting will be huge for teams. So yeah it’s a group I really like for LSU.

OUTFIELD:

I don’t think you see any changes for LSU in the outfield. I think they stick with Andrews, Briggs, and Stewart. However, if Stewart struggles like she did this past season, you’ll see Ali Newland get time. I personally think if everything was regular and the seniors were finished, Newland would be your new starter. I’ve heard that she’s a different type of outfielder than our usual outfielders. I heard that she has much more power maybe even double digits home run power (please let me know more about her below). Another interesting piece is Laney Roos. She has some good potential in the outfield. For the returning bench outfielders in Thymes, Antoine, Weinberger, Houshmandazeh I find hard to see getting time. A pretty good group for LSU.

re: LSU Softball Commitment List/Recruiting Info
RIGHT SIDE OF INFIELD

At first base you have Clark who became LSU’s best hitter last year. Gutierrez who’s a very good defender. And lastly, incoming Freshman Coffey (pls leave more info about her down below). I think first base will be just like it was this past season with Clark as the starter and Gutierrez coming in as a late game defensive replacement. Interesting to see how much play time Coffey will get.

At second base, this was probably LSU’s weakest position because we had absolutely no depth. Tidwell performed very well, but a lot of people have doubts about her ability to perform against SEC pitching. I think we may see Pleasants get moved over to 2nd base. I don’t think we see much of Jones, she may be a potential transfer portal player. Tidwell will be an interesting pinch hit bat because she had good power.

LEFT SIDE OF THE INFIELD:

This year, LSU had Freshman phenom Taylor Pleasants at Shortstop and Senior leader Amanda Doyle at 3rd base. Like I previously stated, I think Pleasants will be moved to 2nd base, much like Bianka Bell got moved over to 3rd base. 2nd base IMO is a better fit for Pleasants. I think highly touted incoming freshman Pilon will take over at SS (please leave more info about her below). At third, Doyle has always been a solid option in the lineup. However, except for her sophomore year, she has struggled to be a .300 hitter. I think she will be in a battle with two freshmen. The younger Houshmandezah and Frazier. Doyle’s leadership was needed mightily in the infield this past year with LSU starting all new starters. Interesting to see the battle between the 5th year senior and 2 freshmen. I think Perkins May have fallen just too low on the depth chart to get any time. She was already only getting pinch hit opportunities anyways.

re: LSU Softball Commitment List/Recruiting Info
MY TEAM OUTLOOK:

Disclaimer: it’s May y’all. So much can change by next January. So I’m just giving my potential team! Please add what y’all think too.

Lineup Option 1: (A more traditional LSU lineup)
1.) Andrews CF
2.) Briggs RF
3.) Pleasants SS
4.) Clark 1B
5.) Cummins/ Brown C
6.) Sunseri DH
7.) Pilon 2B
8.) Doyle 3B
9.) Stewart LF

Lineup B: (my take on a potential LSU lineup)
1.) Andrews CF
2.) Pleasants 2B
3.) Clark 1B
4.) Sunseri DH
5.) Cummins/ Brown C
6.) Pilon SS
7.) Briggs RF
8.) Newland LF
9.) Houshmandazah 3B

Pitching staff:
1.) Wickersham
2.) Gorsuch
3.) Sunseri
4.) Kiloponen
5.) Smith

Locked in starters imo: Andrews CF, Pleasants MIF, Clark 1B, Briggs RF, Cummins/Brown catcher platoon, Pilon IF

Will see some time: Doyle 3B, Gutierrez 1B, Younger Houshmandazah IF, Stewart OF, Newland OF, Smith P, Roos UT, Tidwell

Bench depth: Perkins*, Antoine*, Weinberger*, older Houshmandazah, Coffey, Frazier, Calland, Jones, Thymes*

Projects: Casanova*, Abrams*, Edwards*

Potential transfer out: Calland, Jones

I list Calland and Jones as potential transfer outs, not because I think they aren’t good players. But unlike the other Bench depth/ Project players, they aren’t Lousiana natives or freshmen. They may look to transfer out to a program in Texas that may give them a better chance of getting play time. The other players are from Louisiana so they have TOPS to help pay for school. Calland and Jones DONT have that, so their scholarship situation may be a lil more complex. I don’t see the older Houshmandazah transferring out, her sister is coming, and I think she is fine with her role on the team.

I think this has the chance to be a very good LSU team. Most important is the team chemistry. If Beth can handle that well, we have a very scary team.

Thank you for posting. Love hearing others thoughts on these things as well.

Pitching:

This was one of the bigger surprises this year was the pitching staff as a whole. I knew this group would be better considering how youthful and inexperienced they were last year but they took it to another level during the OOC play. Granted, we didn't play as difficult OOC as we have in previous years, the performances vs the top teams is telling for the future IMO. In the 5 games against Ok. St, Washginton and ULL, the pitching never gave up more than 2 earned runs.

I thought Wickersham and Gorsuch emerged as the top 2 pitchers this year with Wickersham probably the best. I felt Wickersham attacked the strike zone more this year which I found was one of the things she struggled with year one, getting behind in the count. You saw a nice rise in the amounts of strikeouts compared to year one, which Torina was looking for. Wickersham pitched over 11 innings between Oklahoma St and Washington and gave up a combined 0 earned runs.
I think moving into next year, she will probably be one of the pitchers we lean on the most vs the better teams.

Gorsuch, I was happy to finally see how it all came together for her this season. I always thought she was super talented and capable but she lacked confidence in her pitching. This year I felt she finally pitched with confidence and trusted her stuff and you saw a far different result on the field. She is a nice complement to Wickersham. I think overall they did a much better job trying to pitch legally which I think impacted her mental side of pitching in the past. Big things are in store for her next year if she continues to build on what she is currently doing.

Kilponen IMO was probably one of the most improved overall and I think Torina would agree. Kilponen came to LSU highly recruited and was sought after by many top programs including Washington, but she was very raw as a pitcher. This year her control overall was much better. Now there is still areas they will need to clean up but her progression from year one to year 2 was really really good. I think as they develop an off speed to compliment the heat she throws, it will elevated her game to the next level. Again, this offseason polishing up on control will be one of the most critical things moving into next year.

Sunseri, from a statistics standpoint I thought was very solid and she did her job. Sunseri seemed a little off to me this year for whatever reason in all aspects (pitching and hitting). Now I'm not sure if its because of the expectations and she was pressing perhaps? I think Sunseri is a far better hitter than she is a pitcher but she brings so much to the team that is invaluable. That said, she was able to pick up a win over the cajuns and limit them to 2 runs in over 5 innings.

I think moving into next season, there isn't going to be a "Friday/Saturday/Sunday starter". Torina has never been predictable when it comes to pitching matchups. I think you will see a lot of matchups and playing the hot hand. Now I think you have to favor Wickersham and Gorsuch vs the better teams as their body of work was really good this past year. Wickersham has the potential to be an AA moving forward if she continues to progress.

Incoming Freshmen to watch:

Morgan Smith was a highly recruited athlete who choose LSU over UCLA and Alabama back when she was a younger high schooler. She is similar to Sunseri as she hits and pitches but has dialed in more on pitching the last two years. Her senior seasons, she finished with a 0.76 ERA with 54 K's to 5 walks in 27 innings on one of the top schools in Arizona. I expect Morgan to get small dosages next season as Torina prepares her for the future. Big things are in store for this young lady. Her potential is crazy, I'm not sure how her ranking dropped but she is going to be a potential fan favorite.

Morgan Smith pitching highlights

I think Abrams, Cassanvoa (incoming freshmen), and Edwards will train in the bullpen but the 5 pitchers mentioned above will be playing mostly. Cassanova is a little bit of a project. Raw pitcher but she showed potential in camps and travel ball. Used to be committed to ULL actually.

Pecking order moving into next year will look similar to this but do not be surprised if M. Smith gets more innings.
1. Wickersham- 0.40 ERA 31K/10BB in 35.1 IP
2. Gorsuch- 1.15 ERA 42K/7BB in 36.2 IP
3. Sunseri- 1.20 ERA 26K/8BB in 35IP /Kilponen 0.58 ERA 49K/15BB in 36IP
4. Morgan Smith

Bullpen: Edwards, Cassanova, Abrams, and Roos.

I watched the video of Smith and I love that she already have a pretty good change up coming in. Which freshmen do you think will come in and make an impact much like Pleasants and Briggs did this year? Pilon? Brown?

re: LSU Softball Commitment List/Recruiting Info
357- my daughter started what was her brief freshman high school season here in Katy. The team is crazy stacked, but no LSU girls (yet). Here is the rundown-
1b- freshman
2b- Oklahoma commit since 8th grade
Ss- UTSA signee
3b- Ole Miss commit
OF- frosh (d1/p5 potential), d3 commit, d2 signee
P- will be a junior coming off injury- throws mid-60’s not committed that I know of
C- frosh (d1/g5 potential)

Cait was in the district last season and there are a few potentials coming up. My daughter is on a 16u showcase level team now and I will be on the lookout for some of the Hotshots girls from the area.

357- let me know of some other Texas girls and teams to keep an eye out, especially 2022, 23, and 24 girls. I will scout and report back what I can. We are supposed to play in a showcase in Sequin next weekend at OLOL college, but we will see what happens.

Ready to get back out there

Welcome lovepurplelivegold

I was actually going to make a list of the 2022/2023 girls that on are on the hot board. There are a few girls in the Texas Bombers and Hotshot organization that are big recruits that I know LSU is watching closely. Obviously we can't recruit them quite yet but them coming to camps helps with exposure to our program. It won't be long before those recruitments can start.

Katy has had some really good talent over the years, let us know how y'all do!

Let us know if you ever run into Emma strood and her club (thunderbolts)

Btw, since this thread is a bit old and long, I will probably be redoing this thread soon so its more organized and we can start over.

On the first post, I will have all the commits and their national rankings w/ travel ball club like we do already.

On the second post, I will post a break down by recruiting class, different recruiting targets.

Pleasants has the prettiest swing ive seen in softball. Somebody has worked with her her whole life on it and it's obvious.

Here's a question I haven't seen yet on here and wonder how that may affect our depth... has the SEC relaxed its travel restrictions during conference play of 22 players? If not, I foresee some difficult decisions for the coaches and players.

I'm in the same boat as a HS coach next year as I had no seniors and a large freshman class with talent coming in.

I have not seen anything official on that end yet.

I can't imagine telling a kid they can't travel with the team would sit well with them although many other programs will also be dealing with this next season.

re: LSU Softball Commitment List/Recruiting Info
That would be my concern too. I would think that several SEC teams will be in the same situation, but I've only followed our players decisions to stay. If it stays at the level it is now, there are going to be some drama going on at other SEC programs, but our staff is very fair and I'm sure will handle this well.

I wonder what the Big12 travel limit is as well. If theirs is about the same as ours, just think of the commotion that will happen in Austin.

I don't doubt the coaches will treat the players good and. fairly. In the end if the conference do put limits on who they can bring, I don't know how its possible to keep everyone happy. Some of these issues are out of the coaches hands since we are all being dealt with a pretty rough situation.

Kinda like the current super teams going into next year. You will have quite a few teams out there with fairly large rosters and benches filled with highly recruited athletes. I was listening to torina speak this spring after they canceled the season, she stated that was one of her bigger concerns and questions going into next year, is how she will handle the large roster and keeping the young talent happy. Like we just signed one of Torina's better classes this year. That freshmen class was expected to be major contributors right away. Now that the seniors are coming back, it certainly puts a challenge ahead for coaching staff. Some hard decision will have to be made unfortunately.
