Has LSU baseball ever had a better signing class?

Mac Marshall class was absurd. What’s even more absurd is he’s the leading one to get on campus and he never threw a pitch and yet the class was still historically good.

Probably not. But also hard to compare with the way the draft & NIL have shifted things.

ETA: I think the one knock I could see is that he could be hittable for SEC hitters, despite the velo and pitch mix. By all accounts, he won't be a kid that has trouble throwing strikes.

The spin rates is the only knock on him, but as you said, still a high end talent as a guy with some velo who should be able to command his pitches. It’s likely he plays with some different fastball grips and changes some stuff up through college as well.

This is a big year for Yeskie. There is a ton of talent, but still a lot of development needed. Some of the major development is from guys going into year 3 under him. With the talent we have on this pitching staff, there is no reason we shouldn’t have one of the top pitching staffs in the country.

Yeah, I'm going to be really mad if MLB goes to a salary cap, all because the Dodgers somehow have the money to just buy whatever they want, whenever they want it. Salary caps ruin sports.

Anyway, the Schmidt news is fantastic! I'd like to think that the know it all's who called people idiots on here for suggesting that there was a possibility that he'd come here instead of JUCO will learn a lesson from this, but I doubt it.

JUCO seemed likely, but until they know, they shouldn't speak in absolutes and call people names. It ends up being pretty embarrassing for them.

A couple L Schmidt notes from Moscona’s podcast:

1. Scouts had maturity concerns coming out of the draft combine. He was 17 and choosing LSU over JUCO was the mature decision, IMO.

2. He’s never been to Baton Rouge. Hard to believe, but he did commit in August 2025.

Yeskie needs to focus on what they can do best and attack that

Stop asking them to throw pitches in counts they can’t handle

I get that they need to do that in mlb but this is college, let them develop

For the life of me, I don’t understand how someone could think a salary cap doesn’t make sense for the league. 70% of the league already essentially operates with a cap with the tax threshold. The few teams that don’t are typically in huge markets. The dodgers having bottomless pockets isn’t the only advantage they have, they are also able to get guys to sign deferred deals to save them money to continue to add to their super team.

Baseball has always been pretty good with parity compared to most other sports, but the dodgers have figured out the way to break that up. The problem is only 1-2 other teams in the league could possibly follow their model.

Paul Dufrene is pitching right now in the area code games on YouTube. For the royals team

ETA: he’s not pitching, at least yet. There is a lefty on the mound now

And for the life of me, I don't know how any person alive can not see how bad salary caps are for sports. It's not "parity" that it creates, it's mediocrity. Teams face so much turnover from year to year, that fans have no one to relate to. It dumbs everything down.

You are arguing from the standpoint that that Dodgers have necessitated this. Do you not see that this was exactly why I responded to the person who was blaming the Dodgers for the looming lockout by saying that I'm going to be mad if we end up with a salary cap? My exact point was that the Dodgers actions are going to push this sport into a cap which will turn it into garbage.

And your comment about the tax threshold holds no water. It's not a spending cap, it's just a deterrent. One that has no affect on teams with bottomless pits of money. I'm talking about a hard cap that is likely coming. And sports with a hard cap are the sports version of socialism. I'd rather things continue as they are, than to see the sport completely neutered.

But here's the thing. If MLB had any common sense, which they don't, they'd force the Dodgers to play by the same rules as everyone else with their TV deal, and also stop allowing teams to defer money to the end of time like the Dodgers do. Instead, we're going to barrel straight toward the worst outcome for baseball.

Edit- The people on this board not understanding what salary caps do and pining for it's arrival is astounding. Have people learned nothing?

Hopefully not. There are younger players on this roster with much more upside. Simpson’s only way to the field was his power last year and in more than 60 bats only managed 1.

Moscona claiming L.Schmidt is going to get just south of $1.7 over his 3 years at LSU. Maybe that baw claiming he had sauce was on target. It was just over 3 years instead of 1.

Yeah we're shelling out $5 million for Santiarelli and $1.7 Million for Schmidt.

Stanfield would be nice in a perfect world but I don’t know who you cut to add him even if he wanted to come back.

I dont know why people run with such absurd numbers when Jay flat out said freshmen coming in arent making much, the NIL is mostly reserved for returning players and the portal. Thought he has said this on multiple occasions, he just wants guys who want to be here and if you make some NIL then you make it but we arent going to be buying high schoolers.
