Stanfield would be nice in a perfect world but I don’t know who you cut to add him even if he wanted to come back.
Hard to imagine where a lot of those guys would find homes if a ton of rosters are pretty set with hard caps in place. If they had some weird 1 year exception for them they all count as DSA or something that would be different and dont count toward any roster hard count.

What class was Mac Marshall in? I don't remember him.
Posted on 8/3/26 at 9:20 am to mikejsjr0912
2014
He only really became a possibility because of the Astros’ saga with Brady Aiken. When they lost the pool money for not signing him they lost the money from that savings they were depending on to sign Marshall to the price they had agreed on.
He then bailed and went to juco after a few weeks on campus.

With the class finished, I pulled together some comparisons over the last 10+ years (since 2014). It is all based on mlb.com rankings because (1) they are free and generally available - so they are the only ones I have a long term record of and (2) I find them to be as good as any of the rankings. There may be a slight discrepancy in the numbers here or there, as I usually grab the last full rankings and do not go back and adjust after they drop a player who removed himself from the draft - for example, Nate Davis this year.
In terms of where this class stands relative to others, it has the most highly ranked players by a decent margin:
On the individual players, Logan Schmidt is up there in terms of highly ranked players making it to campus, but he is not even the most highly ranked on next year's pitching staff ( that goes to William Schmidt). I stopped this last at top 150 players to keep it reasonable, but I noted a few outside of that. 2026 signees are highlighted for quick reference:

Is this the MLB Top 250 overall (meaning high school + college) rankings each year?

Always forget how high Mo Hampton was ranked...

My issue with people's perception of the rankings (not yours) is that they don't realize these are all based on these guys' projected final forms, basically.
Like so many people on the rant think that Schmidt is locked in as a weekend starter. Someone said that he is comparable to Dylan Crews and Curiel as freshman.
William Patrick was so obviously not better than all but 89 players in his class. Guidry was ranked where he was because scouts thought he'd gain 50 pounds.
So much nuance to these things and our fan base sees "low number? player good!"
All that to say - I appreciate the work you put in on that

Looking at our Top 6 with Logan still TBD and Will 1 more season, not a lot of success in college there
Cabrera was a pretty good player, but thats about as far as I would describe him at LSU, obviously got drafted high in that weird draft in 2020, but never made it past AA ball.
Like I dont know if anyone would put Cabrera in the Top 20ish (maybe towards end of that, I'd actually have to make a full list) or so LSU players in the past decade here or anything. Kinda hurts that 2020 doesnt really count with how short that season was and maybe could have been his big year.

I presented the data without comment, but I couldn't agree more with this. General public - and much of the local media outside of Hunt - sees high ranking and then picks out a comparably ranked player and implies "this guy is the next Dylan Crews" when the reality is that it is a complete crapshoot.
Look at the top 3 guys - 2 flamed out completely and W. Schmidt had one year where he didn't contribute much and one where he was a serviceable weekend starter, but nothing close to matching the highest recruit to make it to campus by a wide margin. Let me be clear that I am not saying he couldn't have an incredible 2027, but just that he hasn't yet.
And of course, I would absolutely take a class of highly ranked players over one of unranked players, but it is still a total crapshoot at the individual player level. Guys develop at different speeds, baseball more than any sport is ranked on potential, etc. On the flip side, you have someone like Kade Anderson that was hurt and not really ranked highly by any of the rankings.
To Thunderbird's question, yes - these are the mlb.com 250 combined high school and college rankings.

It'll always be crazy how we got virtually zero production out of Mac Marshall, Jake Latz, and Jake Godfrey-- only Alex Lange. Those 4 in the same recruiting class was nuts.

Tanner Reaves wouldn't have eligibility. But don't let facts get in the way of shitting on him in a thread completely unrelated to him.

Always need program locker room guys. Can't have 39 star players on a roster...smh. Do better

This is certainly why Jay has said he rather invest into transfers and returning players than HS recruits. We’ve definitely had some signees get drafted that had success and would have been superstars in college, but there is a bunch of those guys that flamed out too.

Sounds like Luke Tucker isn’t going to be here. Kinda shocked by that one since Jay loves his LH bats and he was already on campus posting videos of himself taking BP at the Box. Guess we needed room for Schmidt but wouldn’t have expected it to be Tucker.

Surprised it’s not Martinez or Loew
I don’t think they’ll ever do much at LSU and will transfer after this season

I’m not seeing it anywhere. The tweet in this thread isn’t loading.
