Aside from experienced depth, we lack anyone proven at both positions. So I don’t think it’s overblown at all. We need to add help in both areas, hopefully starters

As I believe some here that think every defensive player on LSU roster with a pulse is championship caliber are simply not evaluating the defense properly.

Obviously not including me because I have stated many times that the 2023 DT situation was not good. Wingo's significant injury was hidden by Kelly until he quit playing completely and then surgery was announced. Maason Smith simply over a year later after ACL surgery was not remotely the player he was a TR FR. As almost everyone has said here, if LSU had just had a decent defense...say 40th ranked instead of 105th, LSU would have been in the hunt for a playoff spot. LSU would have beaten Ole Miss for sure and maybe Alabama.

LSU hasn't had a DT/DE taken in the 1st round since Mingo 11 years ago. In the last 10 years, only 3 defensive players...J Adams, T White, and D White. So I wouldn't call that a 1st round trend.

Which is why we haven’t been elite in those years….save the 1 year Burrow, Jefferson, and Chase put up a million points.

Have mediocre and “serviceable” expectations….and get mediocre results

Not sure what you're arguing against. Seems like this is the board consensus.

Sign 1 or maybe a second DT and LSU is fine on defense. Stand pat on CBs unless an all-SEC caliber player is willing to sign with the Tigers.

You don’t roll out another season where you had Jefferson and wingo playing 80% of snaps vs Uga due to no depth in SecCG.

That would have been interesting since Jefferson was playing at West Virginia in 2022. Jefferson only played at LSU in 2023 and LSU did not qualify for the SecCG this past season. Roy was the other DT in 2022.

Reliford wants to play DE.

If we're counting on a true freshman in McKinley to start, we're in trouble.

McKinley will probably be a DE not a DT for his first two years.

I’d say I agree “desperation” is not the appropriate word for the mood.

Everyone is aware this is a need, and it’s a hot topic. But I’ve got faith BK + Davis/Peoples will address it.

Fans on this board have been spoiled with news, but it’s a long offseason. Be patient, I guarantee you DTs are coming. They’re not overlooking it.

This isn’t right.

Patrick Queen and Derek Stingley just off the top of my head.

No its not. We have a bunch of bodies, not much proven talent.

I found a Billy Embody list but it was an older list I just noticed. Pre-2019 draft. Your memory is correct. Those are the 2 on defense in the last 5 years.

So you gave me a time period where we didn’t finish a season with less than 3 losses …haha

I rest my case

It’s not overblown. We need 2 CBs and 2 legit DTs if we want our defense to improve next year.

I stand corrected. Who was the other that played most snaps against Uga, while about five Uga dTackles split snaps?

That doesn’t take away from the fact the two guys played most snaps, regardless of who it was.

Thanks for the correction on that tho. I was wrong.

Dude you are a drama queen! You’re the complete opposite of the OP. It’s neither as good as he says nor as bad as you think. I believe Alexander, Stamps and one of the Ohio guys will absolutely progress this offseason and be able to provide us with two starters. Toviano did great considering he played completely out of position. He will get better. We absolutely could use 2 more starters at CB and if we can get them here then get them. At the same time, I do think we can get 4 guys ready to play SEC football from the guys we have. You’d be surprised what people can do when they have no choice. As for as talent goes, these guys have it, they have to put it all together, but they have the ability to do it.

Now the DL does need help. We need at least 2-3 inside guys. Now is it possible for guys to move inside like Shand/Jones? Yes but how will they respond to the move? Can the transfers and freshman end up providing starter minutes? They absolutely can, but do you want to risk that and put so much pressure on them with no one to look up to? There’s just no way we don’t get someone in the transfer portal in the spring. 2-3 guys like what Jefferson provided would be enough.

That provides depth and gives these guys someone to look up to. Then these guys can come in and provide depth. With that said, we have to get the young guys on the field as much as possible in the non-conference. Ideally we need two guys who have 2+ years remaining and one guy with 1+ but all can start/ play at a high level.

Of course we take the best players no matter what their edibility looks like but that should solve our future issues, If they all use up their remaining edibility, Bo Davis is able to develop the young guys and we start bringing in elite talent. I think those are all viable possibilities or at the very least, we get close to that point. I know this, our coaches know exactly where they at and they all chose to come coach at LSU. That tells me they’re confident, so I’m confident with em.

I disagree. These are glaring weaknesses in our team. We have to upgrade in order to compete for a title this season.

And the other point not mentioned enough about the DL last year is they had no coach to speak of. The hired coach Lindsey was on medical leave and LSU DL was coached by an analyst. Hell, Pete Jenkins came in as a consultant and immediately complained that the DL were at least 1 yard off the LOS...a big no-no in Pete's mind. So we don't know how good Guillory would be in the proper alignment. And I liked what I saw in Paris Shand #94 I believe when he played...assuming he will move inside.

You know what is also understated is who is going to rush the passer? LSU's supposed misuse of Perkins was also overstated. You know why Perkins wasn't rushing the passer as much last year. Nooooo, it wasn't House being stupid although he might be. Teams found out that if you block Perkins he is incapable of overwhelming the block. He is not a Dallas Turner type. Swinson #13 I think was the only LOS player I counted on to go after the QB. So before anyone gets obsessed with the DT position, better come up with a pass rusher other than Swinson. 11th is sacks in the SEC is laid at the doorstep of the EDGE and DE types.

Exactly
LSU can't win titles on the hopes that non performers are all of a sudden going to give 4-5* level production.
I don't see but maybe minor improvement next year with new coaches because the players are not going to get any faster or tougher than the pitiful coverage we saw this past year.
LSU is at the least 2 legitimate 4-5* DB's that can be coached up for LSU to even match the past season record. LSU has played players that have no business being in the SEC level play on defense, and while I see the top teams, Texas/Ga constantly adding 5* players from place like bama...I don't see LSU getting any of them. LSU must be broke after adding yet another WR who will be on the bench most of the time because we are overloaded at the position. I don't like what is going on with our recruiting/bidding.
