Being quoted around $12K for a 15 seer Amana System.

They quoted cheaper Lennox system, but this is the current model we have and it has been pretty shitty and was only a 14 seer with not as good of a warranty.

I got quoted $14k for 15 seer2 5 ton single stage and $16k for 17seer2 two stage in Mandeville. Both were Heil systems. Crew is out here installing the two stage system as we speak.

We have replaced all 3 of our in the last 5 years.

All are 16 seer Carrier.
2.5 ton
3 ton
4 ton.

1st 2 (2.5 and 3) were in '19 and were 10k each
the 4 ton was 11 or 12k in '21

I was talking to a guy who has an HVAC business a few weeks ago, and he told me that unit prices are increasing practically every six months.

He told me that he gave a guy a quote on a new unit. A year later, the guy called him to get the replacement, but the quote had changed. The guy told him he wasn’t interested at the new price. He said that two days later the guy was calling him back to schedule an install.

I think I paid 11k for a 5 ton 16 seer and a 3 ton dehumidifier installed with new plenum and duct for the dehumidifier about 5 years ago so it's probably not terribly off.

Window units aren't looking as "trashy" these days.

Quoted $25k to replace my 5 ton carrier Infinity with a Goodman inverter unit. Got the same price a few years ago ago for a new Infinity. Not sure what I will do when it breaks. I guess more quotes.

Is this needed or recommended? I know several people (neighbors and co-workers) who pay monthly fees to AC companies to maintain their units. Basically they get semi-annual visits for maintenance and service. Every single one of them has been told in the last year that their unit is 'old' and needs to be replaced for various reasons. I'm not replacing shite until mine goes out.

Right and that's where my quotes keep coming from. Had lightning hit 3 years ago and fried a board. Guy said I should replace soon $25k. 3 years later and just needed a capacitor for now.

I don't know this for certain but this seems like quite a racket. I have gotten to know my AC and hot water heater more over the last few years because companies are recommending replacement when a simple heater element needs to be replaced or capacitor/relay has gone bad. Seems like their first step of troubleshooting includes trying to sell a new unit. I'm on a well also and I've had to do a few maintenance items to that as well. In the age of YouTube, there's no reason not to attempt a fix yourself first. I am electrical savvy fortunately so that stuff doesn't scare me.

I paid $13.5K for a 4 ton single stage, gas furnace, Trane SEER 15, Feb 2023. 4 quotes, Trane or Carrier family products, all within $1K of each other, small or med size HVAC companies.

Your quote seems reasonable for BR area. Amana is among the better line in the Daikan family of HVAC residential products (Goodman, Daikan, Amana) with a very good warranty.

If you really dig around you may be able to find a little cheaper, but what you were quoted does not sound unreasonable.
